16 Every scripture inspired of God `is' also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.
For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.
And we have the word of prophecy `made' more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said unto them, Is it not for this cause that ye err, that ye know not the scriptures, nor the power of God?
The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever: The ordinances of Jehovah are true, `and' righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: In keeping them there is great reward.
BETH. Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed `thereto' according to thy word.
The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me, And his word was upon my tongue.
Thy word have I laid up in my heart, That I might not sin against thee.
Oh how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day. Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies; For they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers; For thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, Because I have kept thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, That I might observe thy word. I have not turned aside from thine ordinances; For thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! `Yea, sweeter' than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: Therefore I hate every false way.
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; And reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
And he gave some `to be' apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ: till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, `even' Christ; from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in `due' measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.
Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he made thee to see his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.
a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth;
Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith, To-day if ye shall hear his voice,
how I shrank not from declaring unto you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly, and from house to house,
For I shrank not from declaring unto you the whole counsel of God.
This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spake and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John:
How then should the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be?
There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; `And' he that hateth reproof shall die.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
Thou gavest also thy good Spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.
Now faith is assurance of `things' hoped for, a conviction of things not seen.
Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; This was from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes?
and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them; for the things which are done by them in secret it is a shame even to speak of. But all things when they are reproved are made manifest by the light: for everything that is made manifest is light.
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit to profit withal.
Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was reckoned unto him;
If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came (and the scripture cannot be broken),
David himself said in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet.
Much every way: first of all, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God.

Commentary on 2 Timothy 3 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 3
In this chapter Paul tells Timothy how bad others would be, and therefore how good he should be; and this use we should make of the badness of others, thereby to engage us to hold our own integrity so much the firmer.
2Ti 3:1-9
Timothy must not think it strange if there were in the church bad men; for the net of the gospel was to enclose both good fish and bad, Mt. 13:47, 48. Jesus Christ had foretold (Mt. 24) that there would come seducers, and therefore we must not be offended at it, nor think the worse of religion or the church for it. Even in gold ore there will be dross, and a great deal of chaff among the wheat when it lies on the floor.
2Ti 3:10-17
Here the apostle, to confirm Timothy in that way wherein he walked,
