1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Jehovah.
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterfalls: All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Unto thee do I lift up mine eyes, O thou that sittest in the heavens.
And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah, And he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I, `And' thou heardest my voice. For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All thy waves and thy billows passed over me. And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes; Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone upon me. Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off. I called upon thy name, O Jehovah, out of the lowest dungeon.
Blessed is every one that feareth Jehovah, That walketh in his ways.
Except Jehovah build the house, They labor in vain that build it: Except Jehovah keep the city, The watchman waketh but in vain.
They that trust in Jehovah Are as mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abideth for ever.
If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side, Let Israel now say,
The cords of death compassed me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The cords of Sheol were round about me; The snares of death came upon me. In my distress I called upon Jehovah, And cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of his temple, And my cry before him came into his ears.
I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go unto the house of Jehovah.
I will lift up mine eyes unto the mountains: From whence shall my help come?
Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, In dark places, in the deeps. Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah
Thou, who hast showed us many and sore troubles, Wilt quicken us again, And wilt bring us up again from the depths of the earth.
Save me, O God; For the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; And he set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

Commentary on Psalms 130 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 130
This psalm relates not to any temporal concern, either personal or public, but it is wholly taken up with the affairs of the soul. It is reckoned one of the seven penitential psalms, which have sometimes been made use of by penitents, upon their admission into the church; and, in singing it, we are all concerned to apply it to ourselves. The psalmist here expresses,
And, as in water face answers to face, so does the heart of one humble penitent to another.
A song of degrees.
