8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
He that says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, *he* [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.
All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid upon him the iniquity of us all.
What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
If they have sinned against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and give them up to the enemy, and they have carried them away captives unto the enemy's land, far or near;
constant quarrellings of men corrupted in mind and destitute of the truth, holding gain to be [the end of] piety.
Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.
And enter not into judgment with thy servant; for in thy sight no man living shall be justified.
If they have sinned against thee (for there is no man that sinneth not), and thou be angry with them, and give them up to the enemy, and they have carried them away captives unto a land far off or near;
for the truth's sake which abides in us and shall be with us to eternity.
And ye know that *he* has been manifested that he might take away our sins; and in him sin is not. Whoever abides in him, does not sin: whoever sins, has not seen him or known him.
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practise the truth.
receiving [the] reward of unrighteousness; accounting ephemeral indulgence pleasure; spots and blemishes, rioting in their own deceits, feasting with you;
But be ye doers of [the] word and not hearers only, beguiling yourselves.
But wicked men and juggling impostors shall advance in evil, leading and being led astray.
For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much potash, thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord Jehovah. How sayest thou, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? See thy way in the valley, acknowledge what thou hast done -- a swift dromedary traversing her ways!
And we are all become as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have carried us away;

1Jo 1:1-4
The apostle omits his name and character (as also the author to the Hebrews does) either out of humility, or as being willing that the Christian reader should be swayed by the light and weight of the things written rather than by the name that might recommend them. And so he begins,
1Jo 1:5-7
