1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.
2 In that day sing ye unto her, A vineyard of red wine.
3 I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
4 Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together.
5 Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.
6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.
7 Hath he smitten him, as he smote those that smote him? or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him?
8 In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind.
9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.
10 Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.
11 When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will shew them no favour.
12 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
1 In that day H3117 the LORD H3068 with his sore H7186 and great H1419 and strong H2389 sword H2719 shall punish H6485 leviathan H3882 the piercing H1281 serpent, H5175 even leviathan H3882 that crooked H6129 serpent; H5175 and he shall slay H2026 the dragon H8577 that is in the sea. H3220
2 In that day H3117 sing H6031 ye unto her, A vineyard H3754 of red wine. H2561 H2531
3 I the LORD H3068 do keep H5341 it; I will water H8248 it every moment: H7281 lest any hurt H6485 it, I will keep H5341 it night H3915 and day. H3117
4 Fury H2534 is not in me: who would set H5414 the briers H8068 and thorns H7898 against me in battle? H4421 I would go H6585 through them, I would burn H6702 them together. H3162
5 Or let him take hold H2388 of my strength, H4581 that he may make H6213 peace H7965 with me; and he shall make H6213 peace H7965 with me.
6 He shall cause them that come H935 of Jacob H3290 to take root: H8327 Israel H3478 shall blossom H6692 and bud, H6524 and fill H4390 the face H6440 of the world H8398 with fruit. H8570
7 Hath he smitten H5221 him, as he smote H4347 those that smote H5221 him? or is he slain H2026 according to the slaughter H2027 of them that are slain H2026 by him?
8 In measure, H5432 when it shooteth forth, H7971 thou wilt debate H7378 with it: he stayeth H1898 his rough H7186 wind H7307 in the day H3117 of the east wind. H6921
9 By this H2063 therefore shall the iniquity H5771 of Jacob H3290 be purged; H3722 and this is all the fruit H6529 to take away H5493 his sin; H2403 when he maketh H7760 all the stones H68 of the altar H4196 as chalkstones H1615 that are beaten in sunder, H5310 the groves H842 and images H2553 shall not stand up. H6965
10 Yet the defenced H1219 city H5892 shall be desolate, H910 and the habitation H5116 forsaken, H7971 and left H5800 like a wilderness: H4057 there shall the calf H5695 feed, H7462 and there shall he lie down, H7257 and consume H3615 the branches H5585 thereof.
11 When the boughs H7105 thereof are withered, H3001 they shall be broken off: H7665 the women H802 come, H935 and set them on fire: H215 for it is a people H5971 of no understanding: H998 therefore he that made H6213 them will not have mercy H7355 on them, and he that formed H3335 them will shew them no favour. H2603
12 And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that the LORD H3068 shall beat off H2251 from the channel H7641 of the river H5104 unto the stream H5158 of Egypt, H4714 and ye shall be gathered H3950 one H259 by one, H259 O ye children H1121 of Israel. H3478
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that the great H1419 trumpet H7782 shall be blown, H8628 and they shall come H935 which were ready to perish H6 in the land H776 of Assyria, H804 and the outcasts H5080 in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 and shall worship H7812 the LORD H3068 in the holy H6944 mount H2022 at Jerusalem. H3389
1 In that day Jehovah with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan the swift serpent, and leviathan the crooked serpent; and he will slay the monster that is in the sea.
2 In that day: A vineyard of wine, sing ye unto it.
3 I Jehovah am its keeper; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
4 Wrath is not in me: would that the briers and thorns were against me in battle! I would march upon them, I would burn them together.
5 Or else let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; `yea', let him make peace with me.
6 In days to come shall Jacob take root; Israel shall blossom and bud; and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit.
7 Hath he smitten them as he smote those that smote them? or are they slain according to the slaughter of them that were slain by them?
8 In measure, when thou sendest them away, thou dost content with them; he hath removed `them' with his rough blast in the day of the east wind.
9 Therefore by this shall the iniquity of Jacob be forgiven, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, `so that' the Asherim and the sun-images shall rise no more.
10 For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.
11 When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off; the women shall come, and set them on fire; for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have compassion upon them, and he that formed them will show them no favor.
12 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will beat off `his fruit' from the flood of the River unto the brook of Egypt; and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great trumpet shall be blown; and they shall come that were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and they that were outcasts in the land of Egypt; and they shall worship Jehovah in the holy mountain at Jerusalem.
1 In that day lay a charge doth Jehovah, With his sword -- the sharp, and the great, and the strong, On leviathan -- a fleeing serpent, And on leviathan -- a crooked serpent, And He hath slain the dragon that `is' in the sea.
2 In that day, `A desirable vineyard,' respond ye to her,
3 I, Jehovah, am its keeper, every moment I water it, Lest any lay a charge against it, Night and day I keep it!
4 Fury is not in Me; Who giveth Me a brier -- a thorn in battle? I step into it, I burn it at once.
5 Or -- he doth take hold on My strength, He doth make peace with Me, Peace he doth make with Me.
6 Those coming in He causeth to take root, Jacob doth blossom, and flourished hath Israel, And they have filled the face of the world `with' increase.
7 As the smiting of his smiter hath He smitten him? As the slaying of his slain doth He slay?
8 In measure, in sending it forth, thou strivest with it, He hath taken away by His sharp wind, In the day of an east wind,
9 Therefore by this is the iniquity of Jacob covered, And this `is' all the fruit -- To take away his sin, in His setting all the stones of an altar, As chalkstones beaten in pieces, They rise not -- shrines and images.
10 For the fenced city `is' alone, A habitation cast out and forsaken as a wilderness, There doth the calf delight, And there it lieth down, And hath consumed its branches.
11 In the withering of its branch it is broken off, Women are coming in setting it on fire, For it `is' not a people of understanding, Therefore pity it not doth its Maker, And its Former doth not favour it.
12 And it hath come to pass, in that day, Beat out doth Jehovah from the branch of the river, Unto the stream of Egypt, And ye are gathered one by one, O sons of Israel.
13 And it hath come to pass, in that day, It is blown with a great trumpet, And come in have those perishing in the land of Asshur, And those cast out in the land of Egypt, And have bowed themselves to Jehovah, In the holy mount -- in Jerusalem!
1 In that day Jehovah, with his sore and great and strong sword, will visit leviathan the fleeing serpent, and leviathan the crooked serpent; and he will slay the monster that is in the sea.
2 In that day [there shall be] a vineyard of pure wine; sing concerning it:
3 I Jehovah keep it, I will water it every moment; lest any harm it, I will keep it night and day.
4 Fury is not in me. Oh that I had briars [and] thorns in battle against me! I would march against them, I would burn them together.
5 Or let him take hold of my strength; let him make peace with me: [yea,] let him make peace with me.
6 In the future Jacob shall take root; Israel shall blossom and bud, and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit.
7 Hath he smitten him according to the smiting of those that smote him? Is he slain according to the slaughter of those slain by him?
8 In measure, when sending her away, didst thou contend with her: he hath taken [her] away with his rough wind in the day of the east wind.
9 By this, therefore, shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit of the taking away of his sin: when he shall make all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are crumbled in pieces, -- the Asherahs and the sun-images shall not stand.
10 For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation abandoned and forsaken like a wilderness; there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume its boughs.
11 When its branches are withered they shall be broken off; women shall come [and] set them on fire. For it is a people of no intelligence; therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he who formed them will shew them no favour.
12 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah shall beat out from the flood of the river unto the torrent of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, [ye] children of Israel.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the great trumpet shall be blown; and they shall come that were perishing in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and they shall worship Jehovah in the holy mountain at Jerusalem.
1 In that day Yahweh with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan the swift serpent, and leviathan the crooked serpent; and he will kill the monster that is in the sea.
2 In that day: A vineyard of wine, sing you to it.
3 I Yahweh am its keeper; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
4 Wrath is not in me: would that the briers and thorns were against me in battle! I would march on them, I would burn them together.
5 Or else let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; [yes], let him make peace with me.
6 In days to come shall Jacob take root; Israel shall blossom and bud; and they shall fill the surface of the world with fruit.
7 Has he struck them as he struck those who struck them? or are they slain according to the slaughter of those who were slain by them?
8 In measure, when you send them away, you do contend with them; he has removed [them] with his rough blast in the day of the east wind.
9 Therefore by this shall the iniquity of Jacob be forgiven, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he makes all the stones of the altar as chalk stones that are beaten in sunder, [so that] the Asherim and the sun-images shall rise no more.
10 For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches of it.
11 When the boughs of it are withered, they shall be broken off; the women shall come, and set them on fire; for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them, and he who formed them will show them no favor.
12 It shall happen in that day, that Yahweh will beat off [his fruit] from the flood of the River to the brook of Egypt; and you shall be gathered one by one, you children of Israel.
13 It shall happen in that day, that a great trumpet shall be blown; and they shall come who were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and those who were outcasts in the land of Egypt; and they shall worship Yahweh in the holy mountain at Jerusalem.
1 In that day the Lord, with his great and strong and cruel sword, will send punishment on Leviathan, the quick-moving snake, and on Leviathan, the twisted snake; and he will put to death the dragon which is in the sea.
2 In that day it will be said, A vine-garden of delight, make a song about it.
3 I, the Lord, am watching it; I will give it water at all times: I will keep it night and day, for fear that any damage comes to it.
4 My passion is over: if the thorns were fighting against me, I would make an attack on them, and they would be burned up together.
5 Or let him put himself under my power, and make peace with me.
6 In days to come Jacob will take root: Israel will put out buds and flowers; and the face of the world will be full of fruit.
7 Is his punishment like the punishment of those who overcame him? or are his dead as great in number as those he put to the sword?
8 Your anger against her has been made clear by driving her away; he has taken her away with his storm-wind in the day of his east wind.
9 So by this will the sin of Jacob be covered, and this is all the fruit of taking away his punishment; when all the stones of the altar are crushed together, so that the wood pillars and the sun-images will not be put up again.
10 For the strong town is without men, an unpeopled living-place; and she has become a waste land: there the young ox will take his rest, and its branches will be food for him.
11 When its branches are dry they will be broken off; the women will come and put fire to them: for it is a foolish people; for this cause he who made them will have no mercy on them, and he whose work they are will not have pity on them.
12 And it will be in that day that the Lord will get together his grain, from the River to the stream of Egypt, and you will be got together with care, O children of Israel.
13 And it will be in that day that a great horn will be sounded; and those who were wandering in the land of Assyria, and those who had been sent away into the land of Egypt, will come; and they will give worship to the Lord in the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

Commentary on Isaiah 27 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 27
In this chapter the prophet goes on to show,
All this is applicable to the grace of the gospel, and God's promises to, and providences concerning, the Christian church, and such as belong to it.
Isa 27:1-6
The prophet is here singing of judgment and mercy,
Isa 27:7-13
Here is the prophet again singing of mercy and judgment, not, as before, judgment to the enemies and mercy to the church, but judgment to the church and mercy mixed with that judgment.
