¹ And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words,

² Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:

³ But Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away captives into Babylon.

⁴ So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.

⁵ But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;

⁶ Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.

⁷ So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.

⁸ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

⁹ Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;

¹⁰ And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

¹¹ And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword.

¹² And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captives: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.

¹³ He shall break also the images of Bethshemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.

³ But Baruch ^H1263 the son ^H1121 of Neriah ^H5374 setteth thee on ^H5496 against us, for to ^H4616 deliver ^H5414 us into the hand ^H3027 of the Chaldeans, ^H3778 that they might put us to death, ^H4191 and carry us away captives ^H1540 into Babylon. ^H894

⁴ So Johanan ^H3110 the son ^H1121 of Kareah, ^H7143 and all the captains ^H8269 of the forces, ^H2428 and all the people, ^H5971 obeyed ^H8085 not the voice ^H6963 of the LORD, ^H3068 to dwell ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Judah. ^H3063

⁵ But Johanan ^H3110 the son ^H1121 of Kareah, ^H7143 and all the captains ^H8269 of the forces, ^H2428 took ^H3947 all the remnant ^H7611 of Judah, ^H3063 that were returned ^H7725 from all nations, ^H1471 whither they had been driven, ^H5080 to dwell ^H1481 in the land ^H776 of Judah; ^H3063

⁶ Even men, ^H1397 and women, ^H802 and children, ^H2945 and the king's ^H4428 daughters, ^H1323 and every person ^H5315 that Nebuzaradan ^H5018 the captain ^H7227 of the guard ^H2876 had left ^H3240 with Gedaliah ^H1436 the son ^H1121 of Ahikam ^H296 the son ^H1121 of Shaphan, ^H8227 and Jeremiah ^H3414 the prophet, ^H5030 and Baruch ^H1263 the son ^H1121 of Neriah. ^H5374

⁷ So they came ^H935 into the land ^H776 of Egypt: ^H4714 for they obeyed ^H8085 not the voice ^H6963 of the LORD: ^H3068 thus came ^H935 they even to Tahpanhes. ^H8471

⁸ Then came the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 unto Jeremiah ^H3414 in Tahpanhes, ^H8471 saying, ^H559

⁹ Take ^H3947 great ^H1419 stones ^H68 in thine hand, ^H3027 and hide ^H2934 them in the clay ^H4423 in the brickkiln, ^H4404 which is at the entry ^H6607 of Pharaoh's ^H6547 house ^H1004 in Tahpanhes, ^H8471 in the sight ^H5869 of the men ^H582 of Judah; ^H3064

¹⁰ And say ^H559 unto them, Thus saith ^H559 the LORD ^H3068 of hosts, ^H6635 the God ^H430 of Israel; ^H3478 Behold, I will send ^H7971 and take ^H3947 Nebuchadrezzar ^H5019 the king ^H4428 of Babylon, ^H894 my servant, ^H5650 and will set ^H7760 his throne ^H3678 upon ^H4605 these stones ^H68 that I have hid; ^H2934 and he shall spread ^H5186 his royal pavilion ^H8237 over them.

¹³ He shall break ^H7665 also the images ^H4676 of Bethshemesh, ^H1053 that is in the land ^H776 of Egypt; ^H4714 and the houses ^H1004 of the gods ^H430 of the Egyptians ^H4714 shall he burn ^H8313 with fire. ^H784

¹⁰ and say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

¹³ He shall also break the pillars of Beth-shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of Egypt shall he burn with fire.

¹ And it cometh to pass, when Jeremiah doth finish to speak unto all the people all the words of Jehovah their God, with which Jehovah their God hath sent him unto them -- all these words --

² that Azariah son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan son of Kareah, and all the proud men, speak unto Jeremiah, saying, `Falsehood thou art speaking; Jehovah our God hath not sent thee to say, Do not enter Egypt to sojourn there;

³ for Baruch son of Neriah is moving thee against us, in order to give us up into the hand of the Chaldeans, to put us to death, and to remove us to Babylon.'

⁴ And Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces, and all the people, have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, to dwell in the land of Judah;

⁵ and Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces, take all the remnant of Judah who have turned from all the nations whither they were driven to sojourn in the land of Judah,

⁶ the men, and the women, and the infant, and the daughters of the king, and every person that Nebuzar-Adan, chief of the executioners, had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch son of Neriah,

⁷ and they enter the land of Egypt, for they have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and they enter unto Tahpanhes.

⁸ And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

⁹ `Take in thy hand great stones, and thou hast hidden them, in the clay, in the brick-kiln, that `is' at the opening of the house of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes, before the eyes of the men of Judah,

¹⁰ and thou hast said unto them: Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: `Lo, I am sending, and I have taken Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and I have set his throne above these stones that I have hid, and he hath stretched out his pavilion over them,

¹¹ and he hath come, and smitten the land of Egypt -- those who `are' for death to death, and those who `are' for captivity to captivity, and those who `are' for the sword to the sword.

¹² And I have kindled a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt, and it hath burned them, and he hath taken them captive, and covered himself with the land of Egypt, as cover himself doth the shepherd with his garment, and he hath gone forth thence in peace;

¹³ and he hath broken the standing pillars of the house of the sun, that `is' in the land of Egypt, and the houses of the gods of Egypt he doth burn with fire.'

⁵ but Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations whither they had been driven, to sojourn in the land of Judah;

⁶ men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the body-guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Nerijah;

⁷ and they came into the land of Egypt: for they hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah. And they came as far as Tahpanhes.

⁸ And the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

¹ And it came about that when Jeremiah had come to the end of giving all the people the words of the Lord their God, which the Lord their God had sent him to say to them, even all these words,

² Then Azariah, the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the men of pride, said to Jeremiah, You have said what is false: the Lord our God has not sent you to say, You are not to go into the land of Egypt and make your living-place there:

³ But Baruch, the son of Neriah, is moving you against us, to give us up into the hands of the Chaldaeans so that they may put us to death, and take us away prisoners into Babylon.

⁴ So Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, did not give ear to the order of the Lord that they were to go on living in the land of Judah.

⁵ But Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces took all the rest of Judah who had come back into the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been forced to go;

⁶ The men and the women and the children and the king's daughters, and every person whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the armed men, had put under the care of Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch, the son of Neriah;

⁷ And they came into the land of Egypt; for they did not give ear to the voice of the Lord: and they came to Tahpanhes.

⁸ Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

⁹ Take in your hand some great stones, and put them in a safe place in the paste in the brickwork which is at the way into Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, before the eyes of the men of Judah;

¹⁰ And say to them, This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, has said: See, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant, and he will put the seat of his kingdom on these stones which have been put in a safe place here by you; and his tent will be stretched over them.

¹¹ And he will come and overcome the land of Egypt; those who are for death will be put to death, those who are to be prisoners will be made prisoners, and those who are for the sword will be given to the sword.

¹² And he will put a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and they will be burned by him: and he will make Egypt clean as a keeper of sheep makes clean his clothing; and he will go out from there in peace.

¹³ And the stone pillars of Beth-shemesh in the land of Egypt will be broken by him, and the houses of the gods of Egypt burned with fire.
