1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
1 G1161 Jesus G2424 went G4198 unto G1519 the mount G3735 of Olives. G1636
2 And G1161 early in the morning G3722 he came G3854 again G3825 into G1519 the temple, G2411 and G2532 all G3956 the people G2992 came G2064 unto G4314 him; G846 and G2532 he sat down, G2523 and taught G1321 them. G846
3 And G1161 the scribes G1122 and G2532 Pharisees G5330 brought G71 unto G4314 him G846 a woman G1135 taken G2638 in G1722 adultery; G3430 and G2532 when they had set G2476 her G846 in G1722 the midst, G3319
4 They say G3004 unto him, G846 Master, G1320 this G3778 woman G1135 was taken G2638 in adultery, G3431 in the very act. G1888
5 Now G1161 Moses G3475 in G1722 the law G3551 commanded G1781 us, G2254 that such G5108 should be stoned: G3036 but G3767 what G5101 sayest G3004 thou? G4771
6 G1161 This G5124 they said, G3004 tempting G3985 him, G846 that G2443 they might have G2192 to accuse G2723 him. G846 But G1161 Jesus G2424 stooped G2955 down, G2736 and with his finger G1147 wrote G1125 on G1519 the ground, G1093 as though he heard G4364 them not. G3361
7 So G1161 when G5613 they continued G1961 asking G2065 him, G846 he lifted up himself, G352 and said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 He that is without sin G361 among you, G5216 let him G906 first G4413 cast G906 a stone G3037 at G1909 her. G846
8 And G2532 again G3825 he stooped G2955 down, G2736 and wrote G1125 on G1519 the ground. G1093
9 And G1161 they which heard G191 it, G2532 being convicted G1651 by G5259 their own conscience, G4893 went out G1831 one by one, G1527 beginning G756 at G575 the eldest, G4245 even unto G2193 the last: G2078 and G2532 Jesus G2424 was left G2641 alone, G3441 and G2532 the woman G1135 standing G2476 in G1722 the midst. G3319
10 When G1161 Jesus G2424 had lifted up himself, G352 and G2532 saw G2300 none G3367 but G4133 the woman, G1135 he said G2036 unto her, G846 Woman, G1135 where G4226 are G1526 those G1565 thine G4675 accusers? G2725 hath G2632 no man G3762 condemned G2632 thee? G4571
11 G1161 She said, G2036 No man, G3762 Lord. G2962 And G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto her, G846 Neither G3761 do G2632 I G1473 condemn G2632 thee: G4571 go, G4198 and G2532 sin G264 no more. G3371
12 Then G3767 spake G2980 Jesus G2424 again G3825 unto them, G846 saying, G3004 I G1473 am G1510 the light G5457 of the world: G2889 he that followeth G190 me G1698 shall G4043 not G3364 walk G4043 in G1722 darkness, G4653 but G235 shall have G2192 the light G5457 of life. G2222
13 The Pharisees G5330 therefore G3767 said G2036 unto him, G846 Thou G4771 bearest record G3140 of G4012 thyself; G4572 thy G4675 record G3141 is G2076 not G3756 true. G227
14 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Though G2579 I G1473 bear record G3140 of G4012 myself, G1683 yet my G3450 record G3141 is G2076 true: G227 for G3754 I know G1492 whence G4159 I came, G2064 and G2532 whither G4226 I go; G5217 but G1161 ye G5210 cannot G3756 tell G1492 whence G4159 I come, G2064 and G2532 whither G4226 I go. G5217
15 Ye G5210 judge G2919 after G2596 the flesh; G4561 I G1473 judge G2919 no G3756 man. G3762
16 And G1161 yet G2532 if G1437 I G1473 judge, G2919 my G1699 judgment G2920 is G2076 true: G227 for G3754 I am G1510 not G3756 alone, G3441 but G235 I G1473 and G2532 the Father G3962 that sent G3992 me. G3165
17 G2532 It is G1125 also G1161 written G1125 in G1722 your G5212 law, G3551 that G3754 the testimony G3141 of two G1417 men G444 is G2076 true. G227
18 I G1473 am G1510 one that bear witness G3140 of G4012 myself, G1683 and G2532 the Father G3962 that sent G3992 me G3165 beareth witness G3140 of G4012 me. G1700
19 Then G3767 said they G3004 unto him, G846 Where G4226 is G2076 thy G4675 Father? G3962 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 Ye G1492 neither G3777 know G1492 me, G1691 nor G3777 my G3450 Father: G3962 if G1487 ye had known G1492 me, G1691 G2532 ye should have known G1492 my G3450 Father G3962 also. G302
20 These G5023 words G4487 spake G2980 Jesus G2424 in G1722 the treasury, G1049 as he taught G1321 in G1722 the temple: G2411 and G2532 no man G3762 laid hands G4084 on him; G846 for G3754 his G846 hour G5610 was G2064 not yet G3768 come. G2064
21 Then G3767 said G2036 Jesus G2424 again G3825 unto them, G846 I G1473 go my way, G5217 and G2532 ye shall seek G2212 me, G3165 and G2532 shall die G599 in G1722 your G5216 sins: G266 whither G3699 I G1473 go, G5217 ye G5210 cannot G3756 G1410 come. G2064
22 Then G3767 said G3004 the Jews, G2453 Will he kill G3385 G615 himself? G1438 because G3754 he saith, G3004 Whither G3699 I G1473 go, G5217 ye G5210 cannot G3756 G1410 come. G2064
23 And G2532 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Ye G5210 are G2075 from G1537 beneath; G2736 I G1473 am G1510 from G1537 above: G507 ye G5210 are G2075 of G1537 this G5127 world; G2889 I G1473 am G1510 not G3756 of G1537 this G5127 world. G2889
24 I said G2036 therefore G3767 unto you, G5213 that G3754 ye shall die G599 in G1722 your G5216 sins: G266 for G1063 if G3362 ye believe G4100 not G3362 that G3754 I G1473 am G1510 he, ye shall die G599 in G1722 your G5216 sins. G266
25 Then G3767 said they G3004 unto him, G846 Who G5101 art G1488 thou? G4771 And G2532 Jesus G2424 saith G2036 unto them, G846 Even G3748 G2532 the same that I said G2980 unto you G5213 from the beginning. G746
26 I have G2192 many things G4183 to say G2980 and G2532 to judge G2919 of G4012 you: G5216 but G235 he that sent G3992 me G3165 is G2076 true; G227 and I G2504 speak G3004 to G1519 the world G2889 those things G5023 which G3739 I have heard G191 of G3844 him. G846
27 They understood G1097 not G3756 that G3754 he spake G3004 to them G846 of the Father. G3962
28 Then G5119 said G2036 Jesus G2424 unto them, G846 When G3752 ye have lifted up G5312 the Son G5207 of man, G444 then G3767 shall ye know G1097 that G3754 I G1473 am G1510 he, and G2532 that I do G4160 nothing G3762 of G575 myself; G1683 but G235 as G2531 my G3450 Father G3962 hath taught G1321 me, G3165 I speak G2980 these things. G5023
29 And G2532 he that sent G3992 me G3165 is G2076 with G3326 me: G1700 the Father G3962 hath G863 not G3756 left G863 me G3165 alone; G3441 for G3754 I G1473 do G4160 always G3842 those things that please G701 him. G846
30 As he G846 spake G2980 these words, G5023 many G4183 believed G4100 on G1519 him. G846
31 Then G3767 said G3004 Jesus G2424 to G4314 those Jews G2453 which G3588 believed G4100 on him, G846 If G1437 ye G5210 continue G3306 in G1722 my G1699 word, G3056 then are ye G2075 my G3450 disciples G3101 indeed; G230
32 And G2532 ye shall know G1097 the truth, G225 and G2532 the truth G225 shall make G1659 you G5209 free. G1659
33 They answered G611 him, G846 We be G2070 Abraham's G11 seed, G4690 and G2532 were G1398 never G4455 in bondage G1398 to any man: G3762 how G4459 sayest G3004 thou, G4771 G3754 Ye shall be made G1096 free? G1658
34 Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 G3754 Whosoever G3956 committeth G4160 sin G266 is G2076 the servant G1401 of sin. G266
35 And G1161 the servant G1401 abideth G3306 not G3756 in G1722 the house G3614 for G1519 ever: G165 but the Son G5207 abideth G3306 G1519 ever. G165
36 If G1437 the Son G5207 therefore G3767 shall make G1659 you G5209 free, G1659 ye shall be G2071 free G1658 indeed. G3689
37 I know G1492 that G3754 ye are G2075 Abraham's G11 seed; G4690 but G235 ye seek G2212 to kill G615 me, G3165 because G3754 my G1699 word G3056 hath G5562 no G3756 place G5562 in G1722 you. G5213
38 I G1473 speak G2980 that which G3739 I have seen G3708 with G3844 my G3450 Father: G3962 and G2532 ye G5210 do G4160 that G3767 which G3739 ye have seen G3708 with G3844 your G5216 father. G3962
39 They answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Abraham G11 is G2076 our G2257 father. G3962 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 If G1487 ye were G2258 Abraham's G11 children, G5043 ye would do G4160 G302 the works G2041 of Abraham. G11
40 But G1161 now G3568 ye seek G2212 to kill G615 me, G3165 a man G444 that G3739 hath told G2980 you G5213 the truth, G225 which G3739 I have heard G191 of G3844 God: G2316 this G5124 did G4160 not G3756 Abraham. G11
41 Ye G5210 do G4160 the deeds G2041 of your G5216 father. G3962 Then G3767 said they G2036 to him, G846 We G2249 be G1080 not G3756 born G1080 of G1537 fornication; G4202 we have G2192 one G1520 Father, G3962 even God. G2316
42 Jesus G2424 G3767 said G2036 unto them, G846 If G1487 God G2316 were G2258 your G5216 Father, G3962 ye would G302 love G25 me: G1691 for G1063 I G1473 proceeded forth G1831 and G2532 came G2240 from G1537 God; G2316 neither G3761 G1063 came I G2064 of G575 myself, G1683 but G235 he G1565 sent G649 me. G3165
43 Why G1302 do ye G1097 not G3756 understand G1097 my G1699 speech? G2981 even because G3754 ye cannot G3756 G1410 hear G191 my G1699 word. G3056
44 Ye G5210 are G2075 of G1537 your father G3962 the devil, G1228 and G2532 the lusts G1939 of your G5216 father G3962 ye will G2309 do. G4160 He G1565 was G2258 a murderer G443 from G575 the beginning, G746 and G2532 abode G2476 not G3756 in G1722 the truth, G225 because G3754 there is G2076 no G3756 truth G225 in G1722 him. G846 When G3752 he speaketh G2980 a lie, G5579 he speaketh G2980 of G1537 his own: G2398 for G3754 he is G2076 a liar, G5583 and G2532 the father G3962 of it. G846
45 And G1161 because G3754 I G1473 tell G3004 you the truth, G225 ye believe G4100 me G3427 not. G3756
46 Which G5101 of G1537 you G5216 convinceth G1651 me G3165 of G4012 sin? G266 And G1161 if G1487 I say G3004 the truth, G225 why G1302 do G4100 ye G5210 not G3756 believe G4100 me? G3427
47 He that is G5607 of G1537 God G2316 heareth G191 God's G2316 words: G4487 ye G5210 therefore G5124 G1223 hear G191 them not, G3756 because G3754 ye are G2075 not G3756 of G1537 God. G2316
48 Then G3767 answered G611 the Jews, G2453 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Say G3004 we G2249 not G3756 well G2573 that G3754 thou G4771 art G1488 a Samaritan, G4541 and G2532 hast G2192 a devil? G1140
49 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 I G1473 have G2192 not G3756 a devil; G1140 but G235 I honour G5091 my G3450 Father, G3962 and G2532 ye G5210 do dishonour G818 me. G3165
50 And G1161 I G1473 seek G2212 not G3756 mine own G3450 glory: G1391 there is G2076 one that seeketh G2212 and G2532 judgeth. G2919
51 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 If G1437 a man G5100 keep G5083 my G1699 saying, G3056 he shall G2334 never G3364 G1519 G165 see G2334 death. G2288
52 Then G3767 said G2036 the Jews G2453 unto him, G846 Now G3568 we know G1097 that G3754 thou hast G2192 a devil. G1140 Abraham G11 is dead, G599 and G2532 the prophets; G4396 and G2532 thou G4771 sayest, G3004 If G1437 a man G5100 keep G5083 my G3450 saying, G3056 he shall G1089 never G3364 G1519 G165 taste G1089 of death. G2288
53 Art G3361 G1488 thou G4771 greater than G3187 our G2257 father G3962 Abraham, G11 which G3748 is dead? G599 and G2532 the prophets G4396 are dead: G599 whom G5101 makest G4160 thou G4771 thyself? G4572
54 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 If G1437 I G1473 honour G1392 myself, G1683 my G3450 honour G1391 is G2076 nothing: G3762 it is G2076 my G3450 Father G3962 that honoureth G1392 me; G3165 of whom G3739 ye G5210 say, G3004 that G3754 he is G2076 your G5216 God: G2316
55 Yet G2532 ye have G1097 not G3756 known G1097 him; G846 but G1161 I G1473 know G1492 him: G846 and G2532 if G1437 I should say, G2036 G3754 I know G1492 him G846 not, G3756 I shall be G2071 a liar G5583 like G3664 unto you: G5216 but G235 I know G1492 him, G846 and G2532 keep G5083 his G846 saying. G3056
56 Your G5216 father G3962 Abraham G11 rejoiced G21 to G2443 see G1492 my G1699 day: G2250 and G2532 he saw G1492 it, and G2532 was glad. G5463
57 Then G3767 said G2036 the Jews G2453 unto G4314 him, G846 Thou art G2192 not yet G3768 fifty G4004 years old, G2094 and G2532 hast thou seen G3708 Abraham? G11
58 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Before G4250 Abraham G11 was, G1096 I G1473 am. G1510
59 Then G3767 took they up G142 stones G3037 to G2443 cast G906 at G1909 him: G846 but G1161 Jesus G2424 hid himself, G2928 and G2532 went G1831 out of G1537 the temple, G2411 going G1330 through G1223 the midst G3319 of them, G846 and G2532 so G3779 passed by. G3855
1 but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,
4 they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?
6 And this they said, trying him, that they might have `whereof' to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
9 And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, `even' unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.
10 And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?
11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.
12 Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16 Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.
18 I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19 They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.
20 These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.
21 He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22 The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am `he', ye shall die in your sins.
25 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.
27 They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am `he', and `that' I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.
30 As he spake these things, many believed on him.
31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, `then' are ye truly my disciples;
32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.
35 And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.
36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.
38 I speak the things which I have seen with `my' Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from `your' father.
39 They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, `even' God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? `Even' because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of `your' father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
45 But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear `them' not, because ye are not of God.
48 The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.
50 But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.
52 The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;
55 and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.
57 The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.
59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
1 And at dawn he came again to the temple,
2 and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;
3 and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,
4 they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,
5 and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'
6 and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,
7 and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'
8 and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,
9 and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'
11 and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'
12 Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'
13 The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'
14 Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.
15 `Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,
16 and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;
17 and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;
18 I am `one' who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'
19 They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'
20 These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;
21 therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'
22 The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'
23 and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;
24 I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am `he', ye shall die in your sins.'
25 They said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;
26 many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'
27 They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;
28 Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am `he'; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;
29 and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'
30 As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;
31 Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,
32 and the truth shall make you free.'
33 They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'
34 Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,
35 and the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;
36 if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.
37 `I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;
38 I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'
39 They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;
40 and now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;
41 ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'
42 Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;
43 wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.
44 `Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.
45 `And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.
46 Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?
47 he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'
48 The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'
49 Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;
50 and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;
51 verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'
52 The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'
54 Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;
55 and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;
56 Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'
57 The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'
58 Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'
59 they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
1 But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.
3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

6 But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground.
7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.
8 And again stooping down he wrote on the ground.
9 But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there.
10 And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee?
11 And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12 Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.
15 Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.

17 And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:
18 I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.
19 They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father.
20 These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come.

23 And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.
25 They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you.
26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.
27 They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father.
28 Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things.
29 And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.
30 As he spoke these things many believed on him.
31 Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;
32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.
33 They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.
35 Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever.
36 If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.
38 I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham;
40 but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God.
42 Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but *he* has sent me.
43 Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:
45 and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.
46 Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.
48 The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.
50 But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.
52 The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is our God.
55 And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.
56 Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.
57 The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them.
3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the midst,
4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such. What then do you say about her?"
6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger.
7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."
8 Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.
10 Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, "Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?"
11 She said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."
12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid."
14 Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don't know where I came from, or where I am going.
15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.
16 Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.
17 It's also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.
18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."
19 They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can't come."
22 The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I am going, you can't come?'"
23 He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."
25 They said therefore to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world."
27 They didn't understand that he spoke to them about the Father.
28 Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.
29 He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn't left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."
30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him.
31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's seed, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, 'You will be made free?'"
34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.
35 A bondservant doesn't live in the house forever. A son remains forever.
36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know that you are Abraham's seed, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.
38 I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father."
39 They answered him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this.
41 You do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God."
42 Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven't come of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why don't you understand my speech? Because you can't hear my word.
44 You are of your Father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn't stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me.
46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?
47 He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God."
48 Then the Jews answered him, "Don't we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"
49 Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
50 But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges.
51 Most assuredly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death."
52 Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, 'If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.'
53 Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God.
55 You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, 'I don't know him,' I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad."
57 The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM."
59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the midst of them, and so passed by.
1 But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them.
3 Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation;
4 And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation.
5 Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it?
6 They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger.
7 But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her.
8 And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor.
9 And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him.
10 Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you?
11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.]
12 Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.
13 So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true.
14 Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going.
15 You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man.
16 Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself--with me is the Father who sent me.
17 Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true.
18 I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me.
19 Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father.
20 Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come.
21 Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going.
22 So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come?
23 And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins.
25 Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first.
26 I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world.
27 They did not see that his words were about the Father.
28 So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching.
29 He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him.
30 When he said this a number came to have faith in him.
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples;
32 And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free.
33 They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free?
34 And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin.
35 Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does.
36 If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.
37 I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you.
38 I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house.
39 In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did.
40 But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that.
41 You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God.
42 Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching.
44 You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false.
45 But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.
46 Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me?
47 He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God.
48 The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit?
49 And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me.
50 I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge.
51 Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.
52 The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are?
54 Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God.
55 You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word.
56 Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad.
57 Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am.
59 So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple.

Commentary on John 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this chapter we have,
Jhn 8:1-11
Though Christ was basely abused in the foregoing chapter, both by the rulers and by the people, yet here we have him still at Jerusalem, still in the temple. How often would he have gathered them! Observe,
Jhn 8:12-20
The rest of the chapter is taken up with debates between Christ and contradicting sinners, who cavilled at the most gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth. It is not certain whether these disputes were the same day that the adulteress was discharged; it is probable they were, for the evangelist mentions no other day, and takes notice (v. 2) how early Christ began that day's work. Though those Pharisees that accused the woman had absconded, yet there were other Pharisees (v. 13) to confront Christ, who had brass enough in their foreheads to keep them in countenance, though some of their party were put to such a shameful retreat; nay perhaps that made them the more industrious to pick quarrels with him, to retrieve, if possible, the reputation of their baffled party. In these verses we have,
This was the sum of the first conference between Christ and these carnal Jews, in the conclusion of which we are told how their tongues were let loose, and their hands tied.
Jhn 8:21-30
Christ here gives fair warning to the careless unbelieving Jews to consider what would be the consequence of their infidelity, that they might prevent it before it was too late; for he spoke words of terror as well as words of grace. Observe here,
Jhn 8:31-37
We have in these verses,
Jhn 8:38-47
Here Christ and the Jews are still at issue; he sets himself to convince and convert them, while they still set themselves to contradict and oppose him.
This is a high charge, and sounds very harsh and horrid, that any of the children of men, especially the church's children, should be called children of the devil, and therefore our Saviour fully proves it.
Jhn 8:48-50
Here is,
Jhn 8:51-59
In these verses we have,
