Then Solomon H8010 began H2490 to build H1129 the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 at Jerusalem H3389 in mount H2022 Moriah, H4179 where the LORD appeared H7200 unto David H1732 his father, H1 in the place H4725 that David H1732 had prepared H3559 in the threshingfloor H1637 of Ornan H771 the Jebusite. Then the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 commanded H559 Gad H1410 to say H559 to David, H1732 that David H1732 should go up, H5927 and set up H6965 an altar H4196 unto the LORD H3068 in the threshingfloor H1637 of Ornan H771 the Jebusite. H2983 And David H1732 went up H5927 at the saying H1697 of Gad, H1410 which he spake H1696 in the name H8034 of the LORD. H3068 And Ornan H771 turned back, H7725 and saw H7200 the angel; H4397 and his four H702 sons H1121 with him hid H2244 themselves. Now Ornan H771 was threshing H1758 wheat. H2406 And as David H1732 came H935 to Ornan, H771 Ornan H771 looked H5027 and saw H7200 David, H1732 and went out H3318 of the threshingfloor, H1637 and bowed H7812 himself to David H1732 with his face H639 to the ground. H776 Then David H1732 said H559 to Ornan, H771 Grant H5414 me the place H4725 of this threshingfloor, H1637 that I may build H1129 an altar H4196 therein unto the LORD: H3068 thou shalt grant H5414 it me for the full H4392 price: H3701 that the plague H4046 may be stayed H6113 from the people. H5971 And Ornan H771 said H559 unto David, H1732 Take H3947 it to thee, and let my lord H113 the king H4428 do H6213 that which is good H2896 in his eyes: H5869 lo, H7200 I give H5414 thee the oxen H1241 also for burnt offerings, H5930 and the threshing instruments H4173 for wood, H6086 and the wheat H2406 for the meat offering; H4503 I give H5414 it all. And king H4428 David H1732 said H559 to Ornan, H771 Nay; but I will verily H7069 buy H7069 it for the full H4392 price: H3701 for I will not take H5375 that which is thine for the LORD, H3068 nor offer H5927 burnt offerings H5930 without cost. H2600 So David H1732 gave H5414 to Ornan H771 for the place H4725 six H8337 hundred H3967 shekels H8255 of gold H2091 by weight. But unto the place H4725 which the LORD H3068 your God H430 shall choose H977 out of all your tribes H7626 to put H7760 his name H8034 there, even unto his habitation H7933 shall ye seek, H1875 and thither thou shalt come: H935 And thither ye shall bring H935 your burnt offerings, H5930 and your sacrifices, H2077 and your tithes, H4643 and heave offerings H8641 of your hand, H3027 and your vows, H5088 and your freewill offerings, H5071 and the firstlings H1062 of your herds H1241 and of your flocks: H6629 And there ye shall eat H398 before H6440 the LORD H3068 your God, H430 and ye shall rejoice H8055 in all that ye put H4916 your hand H3027 unto, ye and your households, H1004 wherein the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath blessed H1288 thee.
Then there shall be a place H4725 which the LORD H3068 your God H430 shall choose H977 to cause his name H8034 to dwell H7931 there; thither shall ye bring H935 all that I command H6680 you; your burnt offerings, H5930 and your sacrifices, H2077 your tithes, H4643 and the heave offering H8641 of your hand, H3027 and all your choice H4005 vows H5088 which ye vow H5087 unto the LORD: H3068
But if ye say H559 unto me, We trust H982 in the LORD H3068 our God: H430 is not that he, whose high places H1116 and whose altars H4196 Hezekiah H2396 hath taken away, H5493 and hath said H559 to Judah H3063 and Jerusalem, H3389 Ye shall worship H7812 before H6440 this altar H4196 in Jerusalem? CHAPTER 22
1Ch 22:1-5. David Prepares for Building the Temple.
1. David said, This is the home of the Lord God—By the miraculous sign of fire from heaven, and perhaps other intimations, David understood it to be the will of God that the national place of worship should be fixed there, and he forthwith proceeded to make preparations for the erection of the temple on that spot.
2. David commanded to gather together the strangers—partly the descendants of the old Canaanites (2Ch 8:7-10), from whom was exacted a tribute of bond service, and partly war captives (2Ch 2:7), reserved for the great work he contemplated.
1Ch 22:6-19. He Instructs Solomon.
6. Then he called for Solomon … and charged him—The earnestness and solemnity of this address creates an impression that it was given a little before the old king's decease. He unfolded his great and long cherished plan, enjoined the building of God's house as a sacred duty on him as his son and successor, and described the resources that were at command for carrying on the work. The vast amount of personal property he had accumulated in the precious metals [1Ch 22:14] must have been spoil taken from the people he had conquered, and the cities he had sacked.
