23 All things G3956 are lawful G1832 for me, G3427 but G235 all things G3956 are G4851 not G3756 expedient: G4851 all things G3956 are lawful G1832 for me, G3427 but G235 all things G3956 edify G3618 not. G3756
All things G3956 are lawful G1832 unto me, G3427 but G235 all things G3956 are G4851 not G3756 expedient: G4851 all things G3956 are lawful G1832 for me, G3427 but G235 I G1473 will G1850 not G3756 be brought under the power G1850 of G5259 any. G5100
But G1161 take heed G991 lest G3381 by any means G4458 this G3778 liberty G1849 of yours G5216 become G1096 a stumblingblock G4348 to them that are weak. G770
But G1161 if G1487 thy G4675 brother G80 be grieved G3076 with G1223 thy meat, G1033 now G3765 walkest thou G4043 not G3765 charitably. G26 G2596 Destroy G622 not G3361 him G1565 with thy G4675 meat, G1033 for G5228 whom G3739 Christ G5547 died. G599
Let us G1377 therefore G686 G3767 follow after G1377 the things which make for G3588 peace, G1515 and G2532 things wherewith G1519 one G240 may edify G3619 another. G240 For G1752 meat G1033 destroy G2647 not G3361 the work G2041 of God. G2316 All things G3956 indeed G3303 are pure; G2513 but G235 it is evil G2556 for that man G444 who eateth G2068 with G1223 offence. G4348
We G2249 then G1161 that are strong G1415 ought G3784 to bear G941 the infirmities G771 of the weak, G102 and G2532 not G3361 to please G700 ourselves. G1438 G1063 Let G700 every one G1538 of us G2257 please G700 his neighbour G4139 for G1519 his good G18 to G4314 edification. G3619
Now G1161 as touching G4012 things offered unto idols, G1494 we know G1492 that G3754 we all G3956 have G2192 knowledge. G1108 Knowledge G1108 puffeth up, G5448 but G1161 charity G26 edifieth. G3618
How G5101 is it G2076 then, G3767 brethren? G80 when G3752 ye come together, G4905 every one G1538 of you G5216 hath G2192 a psalm, G5568 hath G2192 a doctrine, G1322 hath G2192 a tongue, G1100 hath G2192 a revelation, G602 hath G2192 an interpretation. G2058 Let G1096 all things G3956 be done G1096 unto G4314 edifying. G3619
But G1161 he that prophesieth G4395 speaketh G2980 unto men G444 to edification, G3619 and G2532 exhortation, G3874 and G2532 comfort. G3889 He that speaketh G2980 in an unknown tongue G1100 edifieth G3618 himself; G1438 but G1161 he that prophesieth G4395 edifieth G3618 the church. G1577 G1161 I would G2309 that ye G5209 all G3956 spake G2980 with tongues, G1100 but G1161 rather G3123 that G2443 ye prophesied: G4395 for G1063 greater G3187 is he that prophesieth G4395 than G2228 he that speaketh G2980 with tongues, G1100 except G1622 G1508 he interpret, G1329 that G2443 the church G1577 may receive G2983 edifying. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
In this chapter the apostle prosecutes the argument at the close of the last, and,
1Cr 10:1-5
In order to dissuade the Corinthians from communion with idolaters, and security in any sinful course, he sets before them the example of the Jews, the church under the Old Testament. They enjoyed great privileges, but, having been guilty of heinous provocations, they fell under very grievous punishments. In these verses he reckons up their privileges, which, in the main, were the same with ours.
1Cr 10:6-14
The apostle, having recited their privileges, proceeds here to an account of their faults and punishments, their sins and plagues, which are left upon record for an example to us, a warning against the like sins, if we would escape the like punishments. We must not do as they did, lest we suffer as they suffered.
1Cr 10:15-22
In this passage the apostle urges the general caution against idolatry, in the particular case of eating the heathen sacrifices as such, and out of any religious respect to the idol to whom they were sacrificed.
1Cr 10:23-33
In this passage the apostle shows in what instances, notwithstanding, Christians might lawfully eat what had been sacrificed to idols. They must not eat it out of religious respect to the idol, nor go into his temple, and hold a feast there, upon what they knew was an idol-sacrifice; nor perhaps out of the temple, if they knew it was a feast held upon a sacrifice, but there were cases wherein they might without sin eat what had been offered. Some such the apostle here enumerates.-But,
