4 And G2532 did G4095 all G3956 drink G4095 the same G846 spiritual G4152 drink: G4188 for G1063 they drank G4095 of G1537 that spiritual G4152 Rock G4073 that followed them: G190 and G1161 that Rock G4073 was G2258 Christ. G5547
Behold, I will stand H5975 before H6440 thee there upon the rock H6697 in Horeb; H2722 and thou shalt smite H5221 the rock, H6697 and there shall come H3318 water H4325 out of it, that the people H5971 may drink. H8354 And Moses H4872 did H6213 so in the sight H5869 of the elders H2205 of Israel. H3478
And wheresoever H3606 the children H1123 of men H606 dwell, H1753 the beasts H2423 of the field H1251 and the fowls H5776 of the heaven H8065 hath he given H3052 into thine hand, H3028 and hath made thee ruler H7981 over them all. H3606 Thou H607 art this head H7217 of gold. H1722
For G1063 the law G3551 having G2192 a shadow G4639 of good things G18 to come, G3195 and not G3756 the very G846 image G1504 of the things, G4229 can G1410 never G3763 with those G846 sacrifices G2378 which G3739 they offered G4374 year by year G2596 G1763 continually G1519 G1336 make G5048 the comers thereunto G4334 perfect. G5048
G1161 In G1722 the last G2078 day, G2250 that great G3173 day of the feast, G1859 Jesus G2424 stood G2476 and G2532 cried, G2896 saying, G3004 If G1437 any man G5100 thirst, G1372 let him come G2064 unto G4314 me, G3165 and G2532 drink. G4095
But G1161 whosoever G3739 G302 drinketh G4095 of G1537 the water G5204 that G3739 I G1473 shall give G1325 him G846 shall G1372 never G1519 G165 G3364 thirst; G1372 but G235 the water G5204 that G3739 I shall give G1325 him G846 shall be G1096 in G1722 him G846 a well G4077 of water G5204 springing up G242 into G1519 everlasting G166 life. G2222
Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto her, G846 If G1487 thou knewest G1492 the gift G1431 of God, G2316 and G2532 who G5101 it is G2076 that saith G3004 to thee, G4671 Give G1325 me G3427 to drink; G4095 thou G4771 wouldest G302 have asked G154 of him, G846 and G2532 he would G302 have given G1325 thee G4671 living G2198 water. G5204
And G1161 as they G846 were eating, G2068 Jesus G2424 took G2983 bread, G740 and G2532 blessed G2127 it, and brake G2806 it, and G2532 gave G1325 it to the disciples, G3101 and G2532 said, G2036 Take, G2983 eat; G5315 this G5124 is G2076 my G3450 body. G4983 And G2532 he took G2983 the cup, G4221 and G2532 gave thanks, G2168 and gave G1325 it to them, G846 saying, G3004 Drink ye G4095 all G3956 of G1537 it; G846 For G1063 this G5124 is G2076 my G3450 blood G129 of the new G2537 testament, G1242 which G3588 is shed G1632 for G4012 many G4183 for G1519 the remission G859 of sins. G266
G1161 The field G68 is G2076 the world; G2889 G1161 the good G2570 seed G4690 are G3778 G1526 the children G5207 of the kingdom; G932 but G1161 the tares G2215 are G1526 the children G5207 of the wicked G4190 one; G1161 The enemy G2190 that sowed G4687 them G846 is G2076 the devil; G1228 G1161 the harvest G2326 is G2076 the end G4930 of the world; G165 and G1161 the reapers G2327 are G1526 the angels. G32
Then take of them again, H3947 and cast H7993 them into the midst H8432 of the fire, H784 and burn H8313 them in the fire; H784 for thereof shall a fire H784 come forth H3318 into all the house H1004 of Israel. H3478 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 This is Jerusalem: H3389 I have set H7760 it in the midst H8432 of the nations H1471 and countries H776 that are round about H5439 her.
And they thirsted H6770 not when he led H3212 them through the deserts: H2723 he caused the waters H4325 to flow H5140 out of the rock H6697 for them: he clave H1234 the rock H6697 also, and the waters H4325 gushed out. H2100
Behold, he smote H5221 the rock, H6697 that the waters H4325 gushed out, H2100 and the streams H5158 overflowed; H7857 can H3201 he give H5414 bread H3899 also? can H3201 he provide H3559 flesh H7607 for his people? H5971
And I took H3947 your sin, H2403 the calf H5695 which ye had made, H6213 and burnt H8313 it with fire, H784 and stamped H3807 it, and ground H2912 it very small, H3190 even until it was as small H1854 as dust: H6083 and I cast H7993 the dust H6083 thereof into the brook H5158 that descended out H3381 of the mount. H2022
And G2532 the Spirit G4151 and G2532 the bride G3565 say, G3004 Come. G2064 And G2532 let him that heareth G191 say, G2036 Come. G2064 And G2532 let him that is athirst G1372 come. G2064 And G2532 whosoever will, G2309 let him take G2983 the water G5204 of life G2222 freely. G1432
Which G3739 are G2076 a shadow G4639 of things to come; G3195 but G1161 the body G4983 is of Christ. G5547
And G2532 when he had given thanks, G2168 he brake G2806 it, and G2532 said, G2036 Take, G2983 eat: G5315 this G5124 is G2076 my G3450 body, G4983 which G3588 is broken G2806 for G5228 you: G5216 this G5124 do G4160 in G1519 remembrance G364 of me. G1699 After the same manner G5615 also G2532 he took the cup, G4221 when G3326 he had supped, G1172 saying, G3004 This G5124 cup G4221 is G2076 the new G2537 testament G1242 in G1722 my G1699 blood: G129 this G5124 do ye, G4160 as oft as G3740 G302 ye drink G4095 it, in G1519 remembrance G364 of me. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
In this chapter the apostle prosecutes the argument at the close of the last, and,
1Cr 10:1-5
In order to dissuade the Corinthians from communion with idolaters, and security in any sinful course, he sets before them the example of the Jews, the church under the Old Testament. They enjoyed great privileges, but, having been guilty of heinous provocations, they fell under very grievous punishments. In these verses he reckons up their privileges, which, in the main, were the same with ours.
1Cr 10:6-14
The apostle, having recited their privileges, proceeds here to an account of their faults and punishments, their sins and plagues, which are left upon record for an example to us, a warning against the like sins, if we would escape the like punishments. We must not do as they did, lest we suffer as they suffered.
1Cr 10:15-22
In this passage the apostle urges the general caution against idolatry, in the particular case of eating the heathen sacrifices as such, and out of any religious respect to the idol to whom they were sacrificed.
1Cr 10:23-33
In this passage the apostle shows in what instances, notwithstanding, Christians might lawfully eat what had been sacrificed to idols. They must not eat it out of religious respect to the idol, nor go into his temple, and hold a feast there, upon what they knew was an idol-sacrifice; nor perhaps out of the temple, if they knew it was a feast held upon a sacrifice, but there were cases wherein they might without sin eat what had been offered. Some such the apostle here enumerates.-But,
