Cursed H779 be the man H376 that maketh H6213 any graven H6459 or molten image, H4541 an abomination H8441 unto the LORD, H3068 the work H4639 of the hands H3027 of the craftsman, H2796 and putteth H7760 it in a secret H5643 place. I thank G2168 my G3450 God G2316 always G3842 on G4012 your G5216 behalf, G4012 for G1909 the grace G5485 of God G2316 which G3588 is given G1325 you G5213 by G1722 Jesus G2424 Christ; G5547 That G3754 in G1722 every thing G3956 ye are enriched G4148 by G1722 him, G846 in G1722 all G3956 utterance, G3056 and G2532 in all G3956 knowledge; G1108 Even as G2531 the testimony G3142 of Christ G5547 was confirmed G950 in G1722 you: G5213 So that G5620 ye G5209 come behind G5302 in G1722 no G3361 G3367 gift; G5486 waiting for G553 the coming G602 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ: G5547 Who G3739 shall G950 also G2532 confirm G950 you G5209 unto G2193 the end, G5056 that ye may be blameless G410 in G1722 the day G2250 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ. G3105 But G1161 if G1437 all G3956 prophesy, G4395 and G1161 there come in G1525 one G5100 that believeth not, G571 or G2228 one unlearned, G2399 he is convinced G1651 of G5259 all, G3956 he is judged G350 of G5259 all: G3956
And the vision H2380 of all is become unto you as the words H1697 of a book H5612 that is sealed, H2856 which men deliver H5414 to one that is learned, H3045 saying, H559 Read H7121 this, I pray thee: and he saith, H559 I cannot; H3201 for it is sealed: H2856 And the book H5612 is delivered H5414 to him that is not learned, H3045 H5612 saying, H559 Read H7121 this, I pray thee: and he saith, H559 I am not learned. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter the apostle directs them about the use of their spiritual gifts, preferring those that are best and fitted to do the greatest good.
1Cr 14:1-5
The apostle, in the foregoing chapter, had himself preferred, and advised the Corinthians to prefer, Christian charity to all spiritual gifts. Here he teaches them, among spiritual gifts, which they should prefer, and by what rules they should make comparison. He begins the chapter,
1Cr 14:6-14
In this paragraph he goes on to show how vain a thing the ostentation of speaking unknown and unintelligible language must be. It was altogether unedifying and unprofitable (v. 6): If I come to you speaking with tongues, what will it profit you, unless I speak to you by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? It would signify nothing to utter any of these in an unknown tongue. An apostle, with all his furniture, could not edify, unless he spoke to the capacity of his hearers. New revelations, the most clear explications of old ones, the most instructive discourses in themselves, would be unprofitable in a language not understood. Nay, interpretations of scripture made in an unknown tongue would need to be interpreted over again, before they could be of any use.
1Cr 14:15-20
The apostle here sums up the argument hitherto, and,
