6 G1161 Now, G3570 brethren, G80 if G1437 I come G2064 unto G4314 you G5209 speaking G2980 with tongues, G1100 what G5101 shall I profit G5623 you, G5209 except G3362 I shall speak G2980 to you G5213 either G2228 by G1722 revelation, G602 or G2228 by G1722 knowledge, G1108 or G2228 by G1722 prophesying, G4394 or G2228 by G1722 doctrine? G1322
That G2443 the God G2316 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 the Father G3962 of glory, G1391 may give G1325 unto you G5213 the spirit G4151 of wisdom G4678 and G2532 revelation G602 in G1722 the knowledge G1922 of him: G846
Whosoever G3956 transgresseth, G3845 and G2532 abideth G3306 not G3361 in G1722 the doctrine G1322 of Christ, G5547 hath G2192 not G3756 God. G2316 He that abideth G3306 in G1722 the doctrine G1322 of Christ, G5547 he G3778 hath G2192 both G2532 the Father G3962 and G2532 the Son. G5207
Be G4064 not G3361 carried about G4064 with divers G4164 and G2532 strange G3581 doctrines. G1322 For G1063 it is a good thing G2570 that the heart G2588 be established G950 with grace; G5485 not G3756 with meats, G1033 which have G5623 not G3756 profited G5623 them that have been occupied G4043 therein. G1722 G3739
This is a faithful G4103 saying, G3056 and G2532 these things G4012 G5130 I will G1014 that thou G4571 affirm constantly, G1226 that G2443 they which have believed G4100 in God G2316 might be careful G5431 to maintain G4291 good G2570 works. G2041 These things G5023 are G2076 good G2570 and G2532 profitable G5624 unto men. G444
All G3956 scripture G1124 is given by inspiration of God, G2315 and G2532 is profitable G5624 for G4314 doctrine, G1319 for G4314 reproof, G1650 for G4314 correction, G1882 for G4314 instruction G3809 in G1722 righteousness: G1343
Let G5426 us therefore, G3767 as many as G3745 be perfect, G5046 be G5426 thus G5124 minded: G5426 and G2532 if in any thing G1536 ye be G5426 otherwise G2088 minded, G5426 God G2316 shall reveal G601 even G2532 this G5124 unto you. G5213
Whereby, G4314 G3739 when ye read, G314 ye may G1410 understand G3539 my G3450 knowledge G4907 in G1722 the mystery G3466 of Christ) G5547
And G2532 lest G3363 I should be exalted above measure G5229 through the abundance G5236 of the revelations, G602 there was given G1325 to me G3427 a thorn G4647 in the flesh, G4561 the messenger G32 of Satan G4566 to G2443 buffet G2852 me, G3165 lest G3363 I should be exalted above measure. G5229
It is G4851 not G3756 expedient G4851 for me G3427 doubtless G1211 to glory. G2744 G1063 I will come G2064 to G1519 visions G3701 and G2532 revelations G602 of the Lord. G2962
And turn ye not aside: H5493 for then should ye go after H310 vain H8414 things, which cannot profit H3276 nor deliver; H5337 for they are vain. H8414
How G5101 is it G2076 then, G3767 brethren? G80 when G3752 ye come together, G4905 every one G1538 of you G5216 hath G2192 a psalm, G5568 hath G2192 a doctrine, G1322 hath G2192 a tongue, G1100 hath G2192 a revelation, G602 hath G2192 an interpretation. G2058 Let G1096 all things G3956 be done G1096 unto G4314 edifying. G3619 If G1535 any man G5100 speak G2980 in an unknown tongue, G1100 let it be by G2596 two, G1417 or G2228 at the most G4118 by three, G5140 and G2532 that by G303 course; G3313 and G2532 let G1329 one G1520 interpret. G1329 But G1161 if G3362 there be G5600 no G3362 interpreter, G1328 let him keep silence G4601 in G1722 the church; G1577 and G1161 let him speak G2980 to himself, G1438 and G2532 to God. G2316 G1161 Let G2980 the prophets G4396 speak G2980 two G1417 or G2228 three, G5140 and G2532 let G1252 the other G243 judge. G1252 If G1161 G1437 any thing be revealed G601 to another G243 that sitteth by, G2521 let G4601 the first G4413 hold his peace. G4601
Follow G1377 after charity, G26 and G1161 desire G2206 spiritual G4152 gifts, but G1161 rather G3123 that G2443 ye may prophesy. G4395
Charity G26 never G3763 faileth: G1601 but G1161 whether G1535 there be prophecies, G4394 they shall fail; G2673 whether G1535 there be tongues, G1100 they shall cease; G3973 whether G1535 there be knowledge, G1108 it shall vanish away. G2673 For G1063 we know G1097 in G1537 part, G3313 and G2532 we prophesy G4395 in G1537 part. G3313
And G2532 though G1437 I have G2192 the gift of prophecy, G4394 and G2532 understand G1492 all G3956 mysteries, G3466 and G2532 all G3956 knowledge; G1108 and G2532 though G1437 I have G2192 all G3956 faith, G4102 so G5620 that I could remove G3179 mountains, G3735 and G1161 have G2192 not G3361 charity, G26 I am G1510 nothing. G3762 And G2532 though G1437 I bestow G5595 all G3956 my G3450 goods G5224 to feed G5595 the poor, and G2532 though G1437 I give G3860 my G3450 body G4983 to G2443 be burned, G2545 and G1161 have G2192 not G3361 charity, G26 it profiteth me G5623 nothing. G3762
But G1161 the manifestation G5321 of the Spirit G4151 is given G1325 to every man G1538 to G4314 profit withal. G4851 For G1063 to one G3739 G3303 is given G1325 by G1223 the Spirit G4151 the word G3056 of wisdom; G4678 G1161 to another G243 the word G3056 of knowledge G1108 by G2596 the same G846 Spirit; G4151
And G1161 I G1473 myself G846 also G2532 am persuaded G3982 of G4012 you, G5216 my G3450 brethren, G80 that G3754 ye G846 also G2532 are G2075 full G3324 of goodness, G19 filled G4137 with all G3956 knowledge, G1108 able G1410 also G2532 to admonish G3560 one another. G240
And G2532 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G2036 unto him, G846 Blessed G3107 art thou, G1488 Simon G4613 Barjona: G920 for G3754 flesh G4561 and G2532 blood G129 hath G601 not G3756 revealed G601 it unto thee, G4671 but G235 my G3450 Father G3962 which G3588 is in G1722 heaven. G3772
At G1722 that G1565 time G2540 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said, G2036 I thank G1843 thee, G4671 O Father, G3962 Lord G2962 of heaven G3772 and G2532 earth, G1093 because G3754 thou hast hid G613 these things G5023 from G575 the wise G4680 and G2532 prudent, G4908 and G2532 hast revealed G601 them G846 unto babes. G3516
Behold, I am against them that prophesy H5012 false H8267 dreams, H2472 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 and do tell H5608 them, and cause my people H5971 to err H8582 by their lies, H8267 and by their lightness; H6350 yet I sent H7971 them not, nor commanded H6680 them: therefore they shall not profit H3276 this people H5971 at all, H3276 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
O LORD, H3068 my strength, H5797 and my fortress, H4581 and my refuge H4498 in the day H3117 of affliction, H6869 the Gentiles H1471 shall come H935 unto thee from the ends H657 of the earth, H776 and shall say, H559 Surely our fathers H1 have inherited H5157 lies, H8267 vanity, H1892 and things wherein there is no profit. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter the apostle directs them about the use of their spiritual gifts, preferring those that are best and fitted to do the greatest good.
1Cr 14:1-5
The apostle, in the foregoing chapter, had himself preferred, and advised the Corinthians to prefer, Christian charity to all spiritual gifts. Here he teaches them, among spiritual gifts, which they should prefer, and by what rules they should make comparison. He begins the chapter,
1Cr 14:6-14
In this paragraph he goes on to show how vain a thing the ostentation of speaking unknown and unintelligible language must be. It was altogether unedifying and unprofitable (v. 6): If I come to you speaking with tongues, what will it profit you, unless I speak to you by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? It would signify nothing to utter any of these in an unknown tongue. An apostle, with all his furniture, could not edify, unless he spoke to the capacity of his hearers. New revelations, the most clear explications of old ones, the most instructive discourses in themselves, would be unprofitable in a language not understood. Nay, interpretations of scripture made in an unknown tongue would need to be interpreted over again, before they could be of any use.
1Cr 14:15-20
The apostle here sums up the argument hitherto, and,
1Cr 14:21-25
In this passage the apostle pursues the argument, and reasons from other topics; as,
