10 Or G2228 saith he G3004 it altogether G3843 for G1223 our G2248 sakes? G1223 For G1223 our G2248 sakes, G1223 no doubt, G1063 this is written: G1125 that G3754 he that ploweth G722 should G3784 plow G722 in G1909 hope; G1680 and G2532 that he that thresheth G248 in hope G1680 should be partaker G3348 of G1909 his G846 hope. G1680
Now G1161 it was G1125 not G3756 written G1125 for his sake G1223 G846 alone, G3440 that G3754 it was imputed G3049 to him; G846 But G235 for G1223 us G2248 also, G2532 to whom G3739 it shall be G3195 imputed, G3049 if we believe G4100 on G1909 him that raised up G1453 Jesus G2424 our G2257 Lord G2962 from G1537 the dead; G3498
But G1161 which G5101 of G1537 you, G5216 having G2192 a servant G1401 plowing G722 or G2228 feeding cattle, G4165 will say G2046 unto him G3739 by and by, G2112 when he is come G1525 from G1537 the field, G68 Go G3928 and sit down to meat? G377 And G235 will not G3780 rather say G2046 unto him, G846 Make ready G2090 wherewith G5101 I may sup, G1172 and G2532 gird thyself, G4024 and serve G1247 me, G3427 till G2193 I have eaten G5315 and G2532 drunken; G4095 and G2532 afterward G3326 G5023 thou G4771 shalt eat G5315 and G2532 drink? G4095
Say G3004 not G3756 ye, G5210 There G3754 are G2076 yet G2089 four months, G5072 and G2532 then cometh G2064 harvest? G2326 behold, G2400 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Lift up G1869 your G5216 eyes, G3788 and G2532 look on G2300 the fields; G5561 for G3754 they are G1526 white G3022 already G2235 to G4314 harvest. G2326 And G2532 he that reapeth G2325 receiveth G2983 wages, G3408 and G2532 gathereth G4863 fruit G2590 unto G1519 life G2222 eternal: G166 that G2443 both G2532 he that soweth G4687 and G2532 he that reapeth G2325 may rejoice G5463 together. G3674 And G1063 herein G1722 G5129 is G2076 that saying G3056 true, G228 G3754 One G243 soweth, G2076 G4687 and G2532 another G243 reapeth. G2325 I G1473 sent G649 you G5209 to reap G2325 that whereon G3739 ye G5210 bestowed G2872 no G3756 labour: G2872 other men G243 laboured, G2872 and G2532 ye G5210 are entered G1525 into G1519 their G846 labours. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter the apostle seems to answer some cavils against himself.
1Cr 9:1-2
Blessed Paul, in the work of his ministry, not only met with opposition from those without, but discouragement from those within. He was under reproach; false brethren questioned his apostleship, and were very industrious to lessen his character and sink his reputation; particularly here at Corinth, a place to which he had been instrumental in doing much good, and from which he had deserved well; and yet there were those among them who upon these heads created him great uneasiness. Note, It is no strange nor new thing for a minister to meet with very unkind returns for great good-will to a people, and diligent and successful services among them. Some among the Corinthians questioned, if they did not disown, his apostolical character. To their cavils he here answers, and in such a manner as to set forth himself as a remarkable example of that self-denial, for the good of others, which he had been recommending in the former chapter. And,
1Cr 9:3-14
Having asserted his apostolical authority, he proceeds to claim the rights belonging to his office, especially that of being maintained by it.
1Cr 9:15-18
Here he tells them that he had, notwithstanding, waived his privilege, and lays down his reason for doing it.
1Cr 9:19-23
The apostle takes occasion from what he had before discoursed to mention some other instances of his self-denial and parting with his liberty for the benefit of others.
1Cr 9:24-27
In these verses the apostle hints at the great encouragement he had to act in this manner. He had a glorious prize, an incorruptible crown, in view. Upon this head he compares himself to the racers and combatants in the Isthmian games, an allusion well known to the Corinthians, because they were celebrated in their neighbourhood: "Know you not that those who run in a race run all, but one obtaineth the prize? v. 24. All run at your games, but only one gets the race and wins the crown.' And here,
