4 Whosoever G3956 committeth G4160 sin G266 transgresseth G458 G4160 also G2532 the law: G458 for G2532 sin G266 is G2076 the transgression of the law. G458
All G3956 unrighteousness G93 is G2076 sin: G266 and G2532 there is G2076 a sin G266 not G3756 unto G4314 death. G2288
And lest, G3361 when I come G2064 again, G3825 my G3450 God G2316 will humble G5013 me G3165 among G4314 you, G5209 and G2532 that I shall bewail G3996 many G4183 which G3588 have sinned already, G4258 and G2532 have G3340 not G3361 repented G3340 of G1909 the uncleanness G167 and G2532 fornication G4202 and G2532 lasciviousness G766 which G3739 they have committed. G4238
What G5101 shall we say G2046 then? G3767 Is the law G3551 sin? G266 God forbid. G3361 G1096 Nay, G235 I had G1097 not G3756 known G1097 sin, G266 but G1508 by G1223 the law: G3551 for G1063 G5037 I had G1492 not G3756 known G1492 lust, G1939 except G1508 the law G3551 had said, G3004 Thou shalt G1937 not G3756 covet. G1937 But G1161 sin, G266 taking G2983 occasion G874 by G1223 the commandment, G1785 wrought G2716 in G1722 me G1698 all manner of G3956 concupiscence. G1939 For G1063 without G5565 the law G3551 sin G266 was dead. G3498 For G1161 I G1473 was alive G2198 without G5565 the law G3551 once: G4218 but G1161 when the commandment G1785 came, G2064 sin G266 revived, G326 and G1161 I G1473 died. G599 And G2532 the commandment, G1785 which G3588 was ordained to G1519 life, G2222 I G3427 found G2147 G3778 to be unto G1519 death. G2288 For G1063 sin, G266 taking G2983 occasion G874 by G1223 the commandment, G1785 deceived G1818 me, G3165 and G2532 by G1223 it G846 slew G615 me. Wherefore G5620 G3303 the law G3551 is holy, G40 and G2532 the commandment G1785 holy, G40 and G2532 just, G1342 and G2532 good. G18 Was then G3767 that which is good G18 made G1096 death G2288 unto me? G1698 God forbid. G3361 G1096 But G235 sin, G266 that G2443 it might appear G5316 sin, G266 working G2716 death G2288 in me G3427 by G1223 that which is good; G18 that G2443 sin G266 by G1223 the commandment G1785 might become G1096 exceeding G2596 G5236 sinful. G268
And Saul H7586 said H559 unto Samuel, H8050 I have sinned: H2398 for I have transgressed H5674 the commandment H6310 of the LORD, H3068 and thy words: H1697 because I feared H3372 the people, H5971 and obeyed H8085 their voice. H6963
Yet if they shall bethink H7725 themselves in the land H776 whither they were carried captives, H7617 and repent, H7725 H3820 and make supplication H2603 unto thee in the land H776 of them that carried them captives, H7617 saying, H559 We have sinned, H2398 and have done perversely, H5753 we have committed wickedness; H7561
And the Spirit H7307 of God H430 came H3847 upon Zechariah H2148 the son H1121 of Jehoiada H3077 the priest, H3548 which stood H5975 above the people, H5971 and said H559 unto them, Thus saith H559 God, H430 Why transgress H5674 ye the commandments H4687 of the LORD, H3068 that ye cannot prosper? H6743 because ye have forsaken H5800 the LORD, H3068 he hath also forsaken H5800 you.
He was taken H3947 from prison H6115 and from judgment: H4941 and who shall declare H7878 his generation? H1755 for he was cut off H1504 out of the land H776 of the living: H2416 for the transgression H6588 of my people H5971 was he stricken. H5061
Yea, all Israel H3478 have transgressed H5674 thy law, H8451 even by departing, H5493 that they might not obey H8085 thy voice; H6963 therefore the curse H423 is poured H5413 upon us, and the oath H7621 that is written H3789 in the law H8451 of Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of God, H430 because we have sinned H2398 against him.
But G1161 if G1487 ye have respect to persons, G4380 ye commit G2038 sin, G266 and are convinced G1651 of G5259 the law G3551 as G5613 transgressors. G3848 For G1063 whosoever G3748 shall keep G5083 the whole G3650 law, G3551 and yet G1161 offend G4417 in G1722 one G1520 point, he is G1096 guilty G1777 of all. G3956 For G1063 he that said, G2036 Do G3431 not G3361 commit adultery, G3431 said G2036 also, G2532 Do G5407 not G3361 kill. G5407 Now G1161 if G1487 thou commit G3431 no G3756 adultery, G3431 yet if G1161 thou kill, G5407 thou art become G1096 a transgressor G3848 of the law. G3551
And G2532 the prayer G2171 of faith G4102 shall save G4982 the sick, G2577 and G2532 the Lord G2962 shall raise G1453 him G846 up; G1453 and if G2579 he have G5600 committed G4160 sins, G266 they shall be forgiven G863 him. G846
He that committeth G4160 sin G266 is G2076 of G1537 the devil; G1228 for G3754 the devil G1228 sinneth G264 from G575 the beginning. G746 For G1519 this purpose G5124 the Son G5207 of God G2316 was manifested, G5319 that G2443 he might destroy G3089 the works G2041 of the devil. G1228 Whosoever G3956 is born G1080 of G1537 God G2316 doth G4160 not G3756 commit sin; G266 for G3754 his G846 seed G4690 remaineth G3306 in G1722 him: G846 and G2532 he cannot G3756 G1410 sin, G264 because G3754 he is born G1080 of G1537 God. Commentary on 1 John 3 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 3
The apostle here magnifies the love of God in our adoption (v. 1, 2). He thereupon argues for holiness (v. 3), and against sin (v. 4-19). He presses brotherly love (v. 11-18). How to assure our hearts before God (v. 19-22). The precept of faith (v. 23). And the good of obedience (v. 24).
1Jo 3:1-3
The apostle, having shown the dignity of Christ's faithful followers, that they are born of him and thereby nearly allied to God, now here,
1Jo 3:4-10
The apostle, having alleged the believer's obligation to purity from his hope of heaven, and of communion with Christ in glory at the day of his appearance, now proceeds to fill his own mouth and the believer's mind with multiplied arguments against sin, and all communion with the impure unfruitful works of darkness. And so he reasons and argues,
1Jo 3:11-13
The apostle, having intimated that one mark of the devil's children is hatred of the brethren, takes occasion thence,
1Jo 3:14-19
The beloved apostle can scarcely touch upon the mention of sacred love, but he must enlarge upon the enforcement of it, as here he does by divers arguments and incentives thereto; as,
1Jo 3:20-22
The apostle, having intimated that there may be, even among us, such a privilege as an assurance or sound persuasion of heart towards God, proceeds here,
1Jo 3:23-24
The apostle, having mentioned keeping the commandments, and pleasing God, as the qualification of effectual petitioners in and with Heaven, here suitably proceeds,
