13 Go H3212 and get thee in H935 unto king H4428 David, H1732 and say H559 unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, H113 O king, H4428 swear H7650 unto thine handmaid, H519 saying, H559 Assuredly H3588 Solomon H8010 thy son H1121 shall reign H4427 after H310 me, and he shall sit H3427 upon my throne? H3678 why then doth Adonijah H138 reign? H4427
Then he called H7121 for Solomon H8010 his son, H1121 and charged H6680 him to build H1129 an house H1004 for the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel. H3478 And David H1732 said H559 to Solomon, H8010 My son, H1121 as for me, it was in my mind H3824 to build H1129 an house H1004 unto the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 my God: H430 But the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came to me, saying, H559 Thou hast shed H8210 blood H1818 abundantly, H7230 and hast made H6213 great H1419 wars: H4421 thou shalt not build H1129 an house H1004 unto my name, H8034 because thou hast shed H8210 much H7227 blood H1818 upon the earth H776 in my sight. H6440 Behold, a son H1121 shall be born H3205 to thee, who shall be a man H376 of rest; H4496 and I will give him rest H5117 from all his enemies H341 round about: H5439 for his name H8034 shall be Solomon, H8010 and I will give H5414 peace H7965 and quietness H8253 unto Israel H3478 in his days. H3117 He shall build H1129 an house H1004 for my name; H8034 and he shall be my son, H1121 and I will be his father; H1 and I will establish H3559 the throne H3678 of his kingdom H4438 over Israel H3478 for H5704 ever. H5769 Now, my son, H1121 the LORD H3068 be with thee; and prosper H6743 thou, and build H1129 the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 as he hath said H1696 of thee. Only the LORD H3068 give H5414 thee wisdom H7922 and understanding, H998 and give thee charge H6680 concerning Israel, H3478 that thou mayest keep H8104 the law H8451 of the LORD H3068 thy God. H430 Then shalt thou prosper, H6743 if thou takest heed H8104 to fulfil H6213 the statutes H2706 and judgments H4941 which the LORD H3068 charged H6680 Moses H4872 with concerning Israel: H3478 be strong, H2388 and of good courage; H553 dread H3372 not, nor be dismayed. H2865
The LORD H3068 hath sworn H7650 in truth H571 unto David; H1732 he will not turn H7725 from it; Of the fruit H6529 of thy body H990 will I set H7896 upon thy throne. H3678 If thy children H1121 will keep H8104 my covenant H1285 and my testimony H5713 that H2090 H2097 I shall teach H3925 them, their children H1121 shall also sit H3427 upon thy throne H3678 for evermore. H5703
He G3778 shall be G2071 great, G3173 and G2532 shall be called G2564 the Son G5207 of the Highest: G5310 and G2532 the Lord G2962 God G2316 shall give G1325 unto him G846 the throne G2362 of his G846 father G3962 David: G1138 And G2532 he shall reign G936 over G1909 the house G3624 of Jacob G2384 for G1519 ever; G165 and G2532 of his G846 kingdom G932 there shall be G2071 no G3756 end. Commentary on 1 Kings 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The First Book of Kings
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
1Ki 1:1-4
David, as recorded in the foregoing chapter, had, by the great mercy of God, escaped the sword of the destroying angel. But our deliverances from or through diseases and dangers are but reprieves; if the candle be not blown out, it will burn out of itself. We have David here sinking under the infirmities of old age, and brought by them to the gates of the grave. He that cometh up out of the pit shall fall into the snare; and, one way or other, we must needs die.
1Ki 1:5-10
David had much affliction in his children. Amnon and Absalom had both been his grief; the one his first-born, the other his third, 2 Sa. 3:2, 3. His second, whom he had by Abigail, we will suppose he had comfort in; his fourth was Adonijah (2 Sa. 3:4); he was one of those that were born in Hebron; we have heard nothing of him till now, and here we are told that he was a comely person, and that he was next in age, and (as it proved) next in temper to Absalom, v. 6. And, further, that in his father's eyes he had been a jewel, but was now a thorn.
1Ki 1:11-31
We have here the effectual endeavours that were used by Nathan and Bathsheba to obtain from David a ratification of Solomon's succession, for the crushing of Adonijah's usurpation.
1Ki 1:32-40
We have here the effectual care David took both to secure Solomon's right and to preserve the public peace, by crushing Adonijah's project in the bud. Observe,
1Ki 1:41-53
We have here,
