18 Forasmuch as ye know G1492 that G3754 ye were G3084 not G3756 redeemed G3084 with corruptible things, G5349 as silver G694 and G2228 gold, G5553 from G1537 your G5216 vain G3152 conversation G391 received by tradition from your fathers; G3970
For G1063 ye are bought G59 with a price: G5092 therefore G1211 glorify G1392 God G2316 in G1722 your G5216 body, G4983 and G2532 in G1722 your G5216 spirit, G4151 which G3748 are G2076 God's. G2316
Who G3588 gave G1325 himself G1438 for G5228 our G2257 sins, G266 that G3704 he might deliver G1807 us G2248 from G1537 this present G1764 evil G4190 world, G165 according G2596 to the will G2307 of God G2316 and G2532 our G2257 Father: G3962
But we will certainly H6213 do H6213 whatsoever thing H1697 goeth forth H3318 out of our own mouth, H6310 to burn incense H6999 unto the queen H4446 of heaven, H8064 and to pour out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto her, as we have done, H6213 we, and our fathers, H1 our kings, H4428 and our princes, H8269 in the cities H5892 of Judah, H3063 and in the streets H2351 of Jerusalem: H3389 for then had we plenty H7646 of victuals, H3899 and were well, H2896 and saw H7200 no evil. H7451
But G1161 when they knew G1921 that G3754 he was G2076 a Jew, G2453 all G3956 G1096 with G1537 one G3391 voice G5456 about G5613 the space G1909 of two G1417 hours G5610 cried out, G2896 Great G3173 is Diana G735 of the Ephesians. G2180 And G1161 when the townclerk G1122 had appeased G2687 the people, G3793 he said, G5346 Ye men G435 of Ephesus, G2180 what G5101 G1063 man G444 is there G2076 that G3739 knoweth G1097 not G3756 how that the city G4172 of the Ephesians G2180 is G5607 a worshipper G3511 of the great G3173 goddess G2299 Diana, G735 and G2532 of the image which fell down from Jupiter? G1356
For G1063 the time G5550 past G3928 of our life G979 may suffice G713 us G2254 to have wrought G2716 the will G2307 of the Gentiles, G1484 when we walked G4198 in G1722 lasciviousness, G766 lusts, G1939 excess of wine, G3632 revellings, G2970 banquetings, G4224 and G2532 abominable G111 idolatries: G1495
That G2443 the trial G1383 of your G5216 faith, G4102 being much G4183 more precious G5093 than of gold G5553 that perisheth, G622 though G1223 G1161 it be tried G1381 with fire, G4442 might be found G2147 unto G1519 praise G1868 and G2532 honour G5092 and G2532 glory G1391 at G1722 the appearing G602 of Jesus G2424 Christ: G5547
And G2532 again, G3825 The Lord G2962 knoweth G1097 the thoughts G1261 of the wise, G4680 that G3754 they are G1526 vain. G3152
Because G1360 that, when they knew G1097 God, G2316 they glorified G1392 him not G3756 as G5613 God, G2316 neither G2228 were thankful; G2168 but G235 became vain G3154 in G1722 their G846 imaginations, G1261 and G2532 their G846 foolish G801 heart G2588 was darkened. G4654
Ye stiffnecked G4644 and G2532 uncircumcised G564 in heart G2588 and G2532 ears, G3775 ye G5210 do G496 always G104 resist G496 the Holy G40 Ghost: G4151 as G5613 your G5216 fathers G3962 did, so G2532 do ye. G5210 Which G5101 of the prophets G4396 have G1377 not G3756 your G5216 fathers G3962 persecuted? G1377 and G2532 they have slain G615 them which G3588 shewed before G4293 of G4012 the coming G1660 of the Just One; G1342 of whom G3739 ye G5210 have been G1096 now G3568 the betrayers G4273 and G2532 murderers: G5406
Why G1302 do thy G4675 disciples G3101 transgress G3845 the tradition G3862 of the elders? G4245 for G1063 they wash G3538 not G3756 their G846 hands G5495 when G3752 they eat G2068 bread. G740 But G1161 he answered G611 and said G2036 unto them, G846 Why G1302 do ye G5210 also G2532 transgress G3845 the commandment G1785 of God G2316 by G1223 your G5216 tradition? G3862
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Judah, H3063 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they have despised H3988 the law H8451 of the LORD, H3068 and have not kept H8104 his commandments, H2706 and their lies H3577 caused them to err, H8582 after H310 the which their fathers H1 have walked: H1980
O LORD, H3068 my strength, H5797 and my fortress, H4581 and my refuge H4498 in the day H3117 of affliction, H6869 the Gentiles H1471 shall come H935 unto thee from the ends H657 of the earth, H776 and shall say, H559 Surely our fathers H1 have inherited H5157 lies, H8267 vanity, H1892 and things wherein there is no profit. H3276
Trust H982 not in oppression, H6233 and become not vain H1891 in robbery: H1498 if riches H2428 increase, H5107 set H7896 not your heart H3820 upon them.
Be ye not as your fathers, H1 unto whom the former H7223 prophets H5030 have cried, H7121 saying, H559 Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 Turn H7725 ye now from your evil H7451 ways, H1870 and from your evil H7451 doings: H4611 but they did not hear, H8085 nor hearken H7181 unto me, saith H5002 the LORD. H3068 Your fathers, H1 where are they? and the prophets, H5030 do they live H2421 for ever? H5769 But my words H1697 and my statutes, H2706 which I commanded H6680 my servants H5650 the prophets, H5030 did they not take hold H5381 of your fathers? H1 and they returned H7725 and said, H559 Like as the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 thought H2161 to do H6213 unto us, according to our ways, H1870 and according to our doings, H4611 so hath he dealt H6213 with us.

Commentary on 1 Peter 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The First Epistle General of Peter
Chapter 1
The apostle describes the persons to whom he writes, and salutes them (v. 1, 2), blesses God for their regeneration to a lively hope of eternal salvation (v. 3-5), in the hope of this salvation he shows they had great cause of rejoicing, though for a little while they were in heaviness and affliction, for the trial of their faith, which would produce joy unspeakable and full of glory (v. 6-9). This is that salvation which the ancient prophets foretold and the angels desire to look into (v. 10-12). He exhorts them to sobriety and holiness, which he presses from the consideration of the blood of Jesus, the invaluable price of man's redemption (v. 13-21), and to brotherly love, from the consideration of their regeneration, and the excellency of their spiritual state (v. 22-25).
1Pe 1:1-2
In this inscription we have three parts:-
1Pe 1:3-5
We come now to the body of the epistle, which begins with,
1Pe 1:6-9
The first word, wherein, refers to the apostle's foregoing discourse about the excellency of their present state, and their grand expectations for the future. "In this condition you greatly rejoice, though now for a season, or a little while, if need be, you are made sorrowful through manifold temptations,' v. 6.
1Pe 1:10-12
The apostle having described the persons to whom he wrote, and declared to them the excellent advantages they were under, goes on to show them what warrant he had for what he had delivered; and because they were Jews, and had a profound veneration for the Old Testament, he produces the authority of the prophets to convince them that the doctrine of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ was no new doctrine, but the same which the old prophets did enquire and search diligently into. Note,
You have here three sorts of students, or enquirers into the great affair of man's salvation by Jesus Christ:-
1Pe 1:13-23
Here the apostle begins his exhortations to those whose glorious state he had before described, thereby instructing us that Christianity is a doctrine according to godliness, designed to make us not only wiser, but better.
1Pe 1:24-25
The apostle having given an account of the excellency of the renewed spiritual man as born again, not of corruptible but incorruptible seed, he now sets before us the vanity of the natural man, taking him with all his ornaments and advantages about him: For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass; and nothing can make him a solid substantial being, but the being born again of the incorruptible seed, the word of God, which will transform him into a most excellent creature, whose glory will not fade like a flower, but shine like an angel; and this word is daily set before you in the preaching of the gospel.
