9 Not G3361 rendering G591 evil G2556 for G473 evil, G2556 or G2228 railing G3059 for G473 railing: G3059 but G1161 contrariwise G5121 blessing; G2129 knowing G1492 that G3754 ye are G2564 thereunto G1519 G5124 called, G2564 that G2443 ye should inherit G2816 a blessing. G2127
Dearly beloved, G27 avenge G1556 not G3361 yourselves, G1438 but G235 rather give G1325 place G5117 unto wrath: G3709 for G1063 it is written, G1125 Vengeance G1557 is mine; G1698 I G1473 will repay, G467 saith G3004 the Lord. G2962 Therefore G3767 if G1437 thine G4675 enemy G2190 hunger, G3983 feed G5595 him; G846 if G1437 he thirst, G1372 give G4222 him G846 drink: G4222 for G1063 in so G5124 doing G4160 thou shalt heap G4987 coals G440 of fire G4442 on G1909 his G846 head. G2776 Be G3528 not G3361 overcome G3528 of G5259 evil, G2556 but G235 overcome G3528 evil G2556 with G1722 good. G18
For G1063 what G4169 glory G2811 is it, if, G1487 when G2532 ye be buffeted G2852 for your faults, G264 ye shall take it patiently? G5278 but G235 if, G1487 when ye do well, G15 and G2532 suffer G3958 for it, ye take it patiently, G5278 this G5124 is acceptable G5485 with G3844 God. G2316 For G1063 even G1519 hereunto G5124 were ye called: G2564 because G3754 Christ G5547 also G2532 suffered G3958 for G5228 us, G2257 leaving G5277 us G2254 an example, G5261 that G2443 ye should follow G1872 his G846 steps: G2487 Who G3739 did G4160 no G3756 sin, G266 neither G3761 was guile G1388 found G2147 in G1722 his G846 mouth: G4750 Who, G3739 when he was reviled, G3058 reviled G486 not G3756 again; G486 when he suffered, G3958 he threatened G546 not; G3756 but G1161 committed G3860 himself to him that judgeth G2919 righteously: G1346
And G2532 labour, G2872 working G2038 with our own G2398 hands: G5495 being reviled, G3058 we bless; G2127 being persecuted, G1377 we suffer it: G430 Being defamed, G987 we intreat: G3870 we are made G1096 as G5613 the filth G4027 of the world, G2889 and are the offscouring G4067 of all things G3956 unto G2193 this day. G737
But G235 I say G3004 unto you G5213 which G3588 hear, G191 Love G25 your G5216 enemies, G2190 do G4160 good G2573 to them which G3588 hate G3404 you, G5209 Bless G2127 them that curse G2672 you, G5213 and G2532 pray G4336 for G5228 them which despitefully use G1908 you. G5209 And unto him that smiteth G5180 thee G4571 on G1909 the one cheek G4600 offer G3930 also G2532 the other; G243 and G2532 him G575 that taketh away G142 thy G4675 cloke G2440 forbid G2967 not G3361 to take thy coat G5509 also. Commentary on 1 Peter 3 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 3
Wherein the apostle describes the duties of husbands and wives one to another, beginning with the duty of the wife (v. 1-7). He exhorts Christians to unity, love, compassion, peace, and patience under sufferings; to oppose the slanders of their enemies, not by returning evil for evil, or railing for railing, but by blessing; by a ready account of their faith and hope, and by keeping a good conscience (v. 8-17). To encourage them to this, he proposes the example of Christ, who suffered, the just for the unjust, but yet punished the old world for their disobedience, and saved the few who were faithful in the days of Noah (v. 18-22).
1Pe 3:1-7
The apostle having treated of the duties of subjects to their sovereigns, and of servants to their masters, proceeds to explain the duty of husbands and wives.
1Pe 3:8-15
The apostle here passes from special to more general exhortations.
1Pe 3:16-17
The confession of a Christian's faith cannot credibly be supported but by the two means here specified-a good conscience and a good conversation. conscience is good when it does its office well, when it is kept pure and uncorrupt, and clear from guilt; then it will justify you, though men accuse you. A good conversation in Christ is a holy life, according to the doctrine and example of Christ. "Look well to your conscience, and to your conversation; and then, though men speak evil of you, and falsely accuse you as evil-doers, you will clear yourselves, and bring them to shame. Perhaps you may think it hard to suffer for well-doing, for keeping a good conscience and a good conversation; but be not discouraged, for it is better for you, though worse for your enemies, that you suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing.' 1Pe 3:21-22
Noah's salvation in the ark upon the water prefigured the salvation of all good Christians in the church by baptism; that temporal salvation by the ark was a type, the antitype whereunto is the eternal salvation of believers by baptism, to prevent mistakes about which the apostle,
