13 Then Samuel H8050 took H3947 the horn H7161 of oil, H8081 and anointed H4886 him in the midst H7130 of his brethren: H251 and the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 came H6743 upon David H1732 from that day H3117 forward. H4605 So Samuel H8050 rose up, H6965 and went H3212 to Ramah. H7414
And the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 will come H6743 upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy H5012 with them, and shalt be turned H2015 into another H312 man. H376
And it was so, that when he had turned H6437 his back H7926 to go H3212 from Samuel, H8050 God H430 gave H2015 him another H312 heart: H3820 and all those signs H226 came H935 to pass that day. H3117 And when they came H935 thither to the hill, H1389 behold, a company H2256 of prophets H5030 met H7125 him; and the Spirit H7307 of God H430 came H6743 upon him, and he prophesied H5012 among H8432 them.
And the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 came upon him, and he judged H8199 Israel, H3478 and went out H3318 to war: H4421 and the LORD H3068 delivered H5414 Chushanrishathaim H3573 king H4428 of Mesopotamia H763 into his hand; H3027 and his hand H3027 prevailed H5810 against Chushanrishathaim. H3573
And I will come down H3381 and talk H1696 with thee there: and I will take H680 of the spirit H7307 which is upon thee, and will put H7760 it upon them; and they shall bear H5375 the burden H4853 of the people H5971 with thee, that thou bear H5375 it not thyself alone.
And the Spirit H7307 of God H430 came H6743 upon Saul H7586 when he heard H8085 those tidings, H1697 and his anger H639 was kindled H2734 greatly. H3966
Then answered H6030 one H259 of the servants, H5288 and said, H559 Behold, I have seen H7200 a son H1121 of Jesse H3448 the Bethlehemite, H1022 that is cunning H3045 in playing, H5059 and a mighty H1368 valiant man, H2428 and a man H376 of war, H4421 and prudent H995 in matters, H1697 and a comely H8389 person, H376 and the LORD H3068 is with him.
And he arose, H6965 and went H935 into the house; H1004 and he poured H3332 the oil H8081 on his head, H7218 and said H559 unto him, Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 I have anointed H4886 thee king H4428 over the people H5971 of the LORD, H3068 even over Israel. H3478
And there shall come forth H3318 a rod H2415 out of the stem H1503 of Jesse, H3448 and a Branch H5342 shall grow H6509 out of his roots: H8328 And the spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 shall rest H5117 upon him, the spirit H7307 of wisdom H2451 and understanding, H998 the spirit H7307 of counsel H6098 and might, H1369 the spirit H7307 of knowledge H1847 and of the fear H3374 of the LORD; H3068 And shall make him of quick understanding H7306 in the fear H3374 of the LORD: H3068 and he shall not judge H8199 after the sight H4758 of his eyes, H5869 neither reprove H3198 after the hearing H4926 of his ears: H241

Commentary on 1 Samuel 16 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 16
At this chapter begins the story of David, one that makes as great a figure in the sacred story as almost any of the worthies of the Old Testament, one that both with his sword and with his pen served the honour of God and the interests of Israel as much as most ever did, and was as illustrious a type of Christ. Here
1Sa 16:1-5
Samuel had retired to his own house in Ramah, with a resolution not to appear any more in public business, but to addict himself wholly to the instructing and training up of the sons of the prophets, over whom he presided, as we find, ch. 19:20. He promised himself more satisfaction in young prophets than in young princes; and we do not find that, to his dying day, God called him out to any public action relating to the state, but only here to anoint David.
1Sa 16:6-13
If the sons of Jesse were told that God would provide himself a king among them (as he had said, v. 1), we may well suppose they all made the best appearance they could, and each hoped he should be the man; but here we are told,
1Sa 16:14-23
We have here Saul falling and David rising.
