30 Then the princes H8269 of the Philistines H6430 went forth: H3318 and it came to pass, after H1767 they went forth, H3318 that David H1732 behaved himself more wisely H7919 than all the servants H5650 of Saul; H7586 so that his name H8034 was much H3966 set by. H3365
And David H1732 went out H3318 whithersoever Saul H7586 sent H7971 him, and behaved himself wisely: H7919 and Saul H7586 set H7760 him over the men H582 of war, H4421 and he was accepted H3190 in the sight H5869 of all the people, H5971 and also in the sight H5869 of Saul's H7586 servants. H5650
And it came to pass, after the year H8141 was expired, H8666 at the time H6256 when kings H4428 H4397 go forth H3318 to battle, that David H1732 sent H7971 Joab, H3097 and his servants H5650 with him, and all Israel; H3478 and they destroyed H7843 the children H1121 of Ammon, H5983 and besieged H6696 Rabbah. H7237 But David H1732 tarried still H3427 at Jerusalem. H3389
Wherefore the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 saith, H5002 I said H559 indeed H559 that thy house, H1004 and the house H1004 of thy father, H1 should walk H1980 before H6440 me for H5704 ever: H5769 but now the LORD H3068 saith, H5002 Be it far from me; H2486 for them that honour H3513 me I will honour, H3513 and they that despise H959 me shall be lightly esteemed. H7043
Then said H559 Saul, H7586 I have sinned: H2398 return, H7725 my son H1121 David: H1732 for I will no more do thee harm, H7489 because my soul H5315 was precious H3365 in thine eyes H5869 this day: H3117 behold, I have played the fool, H5528 and have erred H7686 exceedingly. H7235 H3966
And he sent H7971 again H7725 a captain H8269 of the third H7992 fifty H2572 with his fifty. H2572 And the third H7992 captain H8269 of fifty H2572 went up, H5927 and came H935 and fell H3766 on his knees H1290 before H5048 Elijah, H452 and besought H2603 him, and said H1696 unto him, O man H376 of God, H430 I pray thee, let my life, H5315 and the life H5315 of these fifty H2572 thy servants, H5650 be precious H3365 in thy sight. H5869
I have more understanding H7919 than all my teachers: H3925 for thy testimonies H5715 are my meditation. H7881
See G991 then G3767 that G4459 ye walk G4043 circumspectly, G199 not G3361 as G5613 fools, G781 but G235 as G5613 wise, G4680
To G4314 whom G3739 coming, G4334 as unto a living G2198 stone, G3037 disallowed G593 indeed G3303 of G5259 men, G444 but G1161 chosen G1588 of G3844 God, G2316 and precious, G1784

Commentary on 1 Samuel 18 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 18
In the course of the foregoing chapter we left David in triumph; now in this chapter we have,
1Sa 18:1-5
David was anointed to the crown to take it out of Saul's hand, and over Jonathan's head, and yet here we find,
1Sa 18:6-11
Now begin David's troubles, and they not only tread on the heels of his triumphs, but take rise from them, such is the vanity of that in this world which seems greatest.
1Sa 18:12-30
Saul had now, in effect, proclaimed war with David. He began in open hostility when he threw the javelin at him. Now we are here told how his enmity proceeded, and how David received the attacks of it.
