13 And they took H3947 their bones, H6106 and buried H6912 them under a tree H815 at Jabesh, H3003 and fasted H6684 seven H7651 days. H3117
And they came H935 to the threshingfloor H1637 of Atad, H329 which is beyond H5676 Jordan, H3383 and there they mourned H5594 with a great H1419 and very H3966 sore H3515 lamentation: H4553 and he made H6213 a mourning H60 for his father H1 seven H7651 days. H3117
And David H1732 went H3212 and took H3947 the bones H6106 of Saul H7586 and the bones H6106 of Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 from the men H1167 of Jabeshgilead, H3003 H1568 which had stolen H1589 them from the street H7339 of Bethshan, H1052 where the Philistines H6430 had hanged H8511 H8518 them, when H3117 the Philistines H6430 had slain H5221 Saul H7586 in Gilboa: H1533 And he brought up H5927 from thence the bones H6106 of Saul H7586 and the bones H6106 of Jonathan H3083 his son; H1121 and they gathered H622 the bones H6106 of them that were hanged. H3363 And the bones H6106 of Saul H7586 and Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 buried H6912 they in the country H776 of Benjamin H1144 in Zelah, H6762 in the sepulchre H6913 of Kish H7027 his father: H1 and they performed H6213 all that the king H4428 commanded. When Saul H7586 heard H8085 that David H1732 was discovered, H3045 and the men H582 that were with him, (now Saul H7586 abode H3427 in Gibeah H1390 under a tree H815 in Ramah, H7414 having his spear H2595 in his hand, H3027 and all his servants H5650 were standing H5324 about him;)
But Deborah H1683 Rebekah's H7259 nurse H3243 died, H4191 and she was buried H6912 beneath Bethel H1008 under an oak: H437 and the name H8034 of it was called H7121 Allonbachuth. H439
And they mourned, H5594 and wept, H1058 and fasted H6684 until even, H6153 for Saul, H7586 and for Jonathan H3083 his son, H1121 and for the people H5971 of the LORD, H3068 and for the house H1004 of Israel; H3478 because they were fallen H5307 by the sword. H2719
And the men H582 of Judah H3063 came, H935 and there they anointed H4886 David H1732 king H4428 over the house H1004 of Judah. Commentary on 1 Samuel 31 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 31
In the foregoing chapter we had David conquering, yea, more than a conqueror. In this chapter we have Saul conquered and worse than a captive. Providence ordered it that both these things should be doing just at the same time. The very same day; perhaps, that David was triumphing over the Amalekites, were the Philistines triumphing over Saul. One is set over against the other, that men may see what comes of trusting in God and what comes of forsaking him. We left Saul ready to engage the Philistines, with a shaking hand and an aching heart, having had his doom read him from hell, which he would not regard when it was read him from heaven. Let us now see what becomes of him. Here is,
1Sa 31:1-7
The day of recompence has now come, in which Saul must account for the blood of the Amalekites which he had sinfully spared, and that of the priests which he had more sinfully spilt; that of David too, which he would have spilt, must come into the account. Now his day has come to fall, as David foresaw, when he should descend into battle and perish, ch. 26:10. Come and see the righteous judgments of God.
1Sa 31:8-13
The scripture makes no mention of the souls of Saul and his sons, what became of them after they were dead (secret things belong not to us), but of their bodies only.
This book began with the birth of Samuel, but now it ends with the burial of Saul, the comparing of which two together will teach us to prefer the honour that comes from God before any of the honours which this world pretends to have the disposal of.
