7 Desiring G2309 to be G1511 teachers of the law; G3547 G3361 understanding G3539 neither G3383 what G3739 they say, G3004 nor G3383 whereof G4012 G5101 they affirm. G1226
For G1063 there are G1526 many G4183 unruly G506 and G2532 vain talkers G3151 and G2532 deceivers, G5423 specially G3122 they of G1537 the circumcision: G4061 Whose G3739 mouths G1993 must G1163 be stopped, G1993 who G3748 subvert G396 whole G3650 houses, G3624 teaching G1321 things which G3739 they ought G1163 not, G3361 for G5484 filthy G150 lucre's G2771 sake. G5484
For G1161 I testify G3143 again G3825 to every G3956 man G444 that is circumcised, G4059 that G3754 he is G2076 a debtor G3781 to do G4160 the whole G3650 law. G3551 Christ G5547 is become of no effect unto you, G575 G2673 whosoever of you G3748 are justified G1344 by G1722 the law; G3551 ye are fallen from G1601 grace. G5485
Wherefore the Lord H136 said, H559 Forasmuch H3282 as this people H5971 draw near H5066 me with their mouth, H6310 and with their lips H8193 do honour H3513 me, but have removed H7368 their heart H3820 far H7368 from me, and their fear H3374 toward me is taught H3925 by the precept H4687 of men: H582 Therefore, behold, I will proceed H3254 to do a marvellous work H6381 among this people, H5971 even a marvellous work H6381 and a wonder: H6382 for the wisdom H2451 of their wise H2450 men shall perish, H6 and the understanding H998 of their prudent H995 men shall be hid. H5641
And G5037 art confident G3982 that thou thyself G4572 art G1511 a guide G3595 of the blind, G5185 a light G5457 of them which are in G1722 darkness, G4655 An instructor G3810 of the foolish, G878 a teacher G1320 of babes, G3516 which hast G2192 the form G3446 of knowledge G1108 and G2532 of the truth G225 in G1722 the law. G3551 Thou therefore G3767 which G3588 teachest G1321 another, G2087 teachest thou G1321 not G3756 thyself? G4572 thou that preachest G2784 a man should G2813 not G3361 steal, G2813 dost thou steal? G2813
And G2532 some of G1537 the Pharisees G5330 which G3588 were G5607 with G3326 him G846 heard G191 these words, G5023 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Are G3361 G2070 we G2249 blind G5185 also? G2532 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 If G1487 ye were G2258 blind, G5185 ye should G302 have G2192 no G3756 sin: G266 but G1161 now G3568 ye say, G3004 G3754 We see; G991 therefore G3767 your G5216 sin G266 remaineth. G3306
Nicodemus G3530 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 How G4459 can G1410 these things G5023 be? G1096 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 a master G1320 of Israel, G2474 and G2532 knowest G1097 not G3756 these things? G5023
Woe G3759 unto you, G5213 ye blind G5185 guides, G3595 which G3588 say, G3004 Whosoever G3739 G302 shall swear G3660 by G1722 the temple, G3485 it is G2076 nothing; G3762 but G1161 whosoever G3739 G302 shall swear G3660 by G1722 the gold G5557 of the temple, G3485 he is a debtor! G3784 Ye fools G3474 and G2532 blind: G5185 for G1063 whether G5101 is G2076 greater, G3187 the gold, G5557 or G2228 the temple G3485 that sanctifieth G37 the gold? G5557 And, G2532 Whosoever G3739 G1437 shall swear G3660 by G1722 the altar, G2379 it is G2076 nothing; G3762 but G1161 whosoever G3739 G302 sweareth G3660 by G1722 the gift G1435 that is upon G1883 it, G846 he is guilty. G3784 Ye fools G3474 and G2532 blind: G5185 for G1063 whether G5101 is greater, G3187 the gift, G1435 or G2228 the altar G2379 that sanctifieth G37 the gift? G1435 Whoso therefore G3767 shall swear G3660 by G1722 the altar, G2379 sweareth G3660 by G1722 it, G846 and G2532 by G1722 all things G3956 thereon. G1883 G846 And G2532 whoso shall swear G3660 by G1722 the temple, G3485 sweareth G3660 by G1722 it, G846 and G2532 by G1722 him that dwelleth G2730 therein. G846 And G2532 he that shall swear G3660 by G1722 heaven, G3772 sweareth G3660 by G1722 the throne G2362 of God, G2316 and G2532 by G1722 him that sitteth G2521 thereon. G1883 G846 Woe G3759 unto you, G5213 scribes G1122 and G2532 Pharisees, G5330 hypocrites! G5273 for G3754 ye pay tithe G586 of mint G2238 and G2532 anise G432 and G2532 cummin, G2951 and G2532 have omitted G863 the weightier G926 matters of the law, G3551 judgment, G2920 G2532 mercy, G1656 and G2532 faith: G4102 these G5023 ought ye G1163 to have done, G4160 and not G3361 to leave G863 the other G2548 undone. G863 Ye blind G5185 guides, G3595 which strain at G1368 a gnat, G2971 and G1161 swallow G2666 a camel. G2574
How do ye say, H559 We are wise, H2450 and the law H8451 of the LORD H3068 is with us? Lo, certainly H403 in vain H8267 made H6213 he it; the pen H5842 of the scribes H5608 is in vain. H8267 The wise H2450 men are ashamed, H3001 they are dismayed H2865 and taken: H3920 lo, they have rejected H3988 the word H1697 of the LORD; H3068 and what wisdom H2451 is in them?

Commentary on 1 Timothy 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 1
After the inscription (v. 1, 2) we have,
1Ti 1:1-4
Here is,
1Ti 1:5-11
Here the apostle instructs Timothy how to guard against the judaizing teachers, or others who mingled fables and endless genealogies with the gospel. He shows the use of the law, and the glory of the gospel.
1Ti 1:12-17
Here the apostle,
1Ti 1:18-20
Here is the charge he gives to Timothy to proceed in his work with resolution, v. 18. Observe here, The gospel is a charge committed to the ministers of it; it is committed to their trust, to see that it be duly applied according to the intent and meaning of it, and the design of its great Author. It seems, there had been prophecies before concerning Timothy, that he should be taken into the ministry, and should prove eminent in the work of the ministry; this encouraged Paul to commit this charge to him. Observe,
