13 Till G2193 I come, G2064 give attendance G4337 to reading, G320 to exhortation, G3874 to doctrine. G1319
Or G1535 he that exhorteth, G3870 on G1722 exhortation: G3874 he that giveth, G3330 let him do it with G1722 simplicity; G572 he that ruleth, G4291 with G1722 diligence; G4710 he that sheweth mercy, G1653 with G1722 cheerfulness. G2432
Study G4704 to shew G3936 thyself G4572 approved G1384 unto God, G2316 a workman G2040 that needeth not to be ashamed, G422 rightly dividing G3718 the word G3056 of truth. G225 But G1161 shun G4026 profane G952 and vain babblings: G2757 for G1063 they will increase G4298 unto G1909 more G4119 ungodliness. G763 And G2532 their G846 word G3056 will eat G2192 G3542 as G5613 doth a canker: G1044 of whom G3739 is G2076 Hymenaeus G5211 and G2532 Philetus; G5372
Take heed G1907 unto thyself, G4572 and G2532 unto the doctrine; G1319 continue G1961 in them: G846 for G1063 in doing G4160 this G5124 thou shalt G4982 both G2532 save G4982 thyself, G4572 and G2532 them that hear G191 thee. G4675
If thou put G5294 the brethren G80 in remembrance G5294 of these things, G5023 thou shalt be G2071 a good G2570 minister G1249 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 nourished up G1789 in the words G3056 of faith G4102 and G2532 of good G2570 doctrine, G1319 whereunto G3739 thou hast attained. G3877
These things G5023 write I G1125 unto thee, G4671 hoping G1679 to come G2064 unto G4314 thee G4571 shortly: G5032 But G1161 if G1437 I tarry long, G1019 that G2443 thou mayest know G1492 how G4459 thou oughtest G1163 to behave thyself G390 in G1722 the house G3624 of God, G2316 which G3748 is G2076 the church G1577 of the living G2198 God, G2316 the pillar G4769 and G2532 ground G1477 of the truth. G225
How G5101 is it G2076 then, G3767 brethren? G80 when G3752 ye come together, G4905 every one G1538 of you G5216 hath G2192 a psalm, G5568 hath G2192 a doctrine, G1322 hath G2192 a tongue, G1100 hath G2192 a revelation, G602 hath G2192 an interpretation. G2058 Let G1096 all things G3956 be done G1096 unto G4314 edifying. G3619
G1161 Now, G3570 brethren, G80 if G1437 I come G2064 unto G4314 you G5209 speaking G2980 with tongues, G1100 what G5101 shall I profit G5623 you, G5209 except G3362 I shall speak G2980 to you G5213 either G2228 by G1722 revelation, G602 or G2228 by G1722 knowledge, G1108 or G2228 by G1722 prophesying, G4394 or G2228 by G1722 doctrine? G1322
But G1161 he that prophesieth G4395 speaketh G2980 unto men G444 to edification, G3619 and G2532 exhortation, G3874 and G2532 comfort. G3889
And it shall be with him, and he shall read H7121 therein all the days H3117 of his life: H2416 that he may learn H3925 to fear H3372 the LORD H3068 his God, H430 to keep H8104 all the words H1697 of this law H8451 and these statutes, H2706 to do H6213 them:
G1161 These G3778 were G2258 more noble G2104 than those in G1722 Thessalonica, G2332 in that they G3748 received G1209 the word G3056 with G3326 all G3956 readiness of mind, G4288 and searched G350 the scriptures G1124 daily, G2250 G2596 whether G1487 those things G5023 were G2192 so. G3779
But G1161 we G2249 will give ourselves continually G4342 to prayer, G4335 and G2532 to the ministry G1248 of the word. G3056
Search G2045 the scriptures; G1124 for G3754 in G1722 them G846 ye G5210 think G1380 ye have G2192 eternal G166 life: G2222 and G2532 they G1565 are they G1526 which testify G3140 of G4012 me. G1700
Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Have ye understood G4920 all G3956 these G5023 things? G3956 They say G3004 unto him, G846 Yea, G3483 Lord. G2962 Then G1161 said G2036 he unto them, G846 Therefore G1223 G5124 every G3956 scribe G1122 which is instructed G3100 unto G1519 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto a man G444 that is an householder, G3617 which G3748 bringeth forth G1544 out of G1537 his G846 treasure G2344 things new G2537 and G2532 old. G3820
If thou seekest H1245 her as silver, H3701 and searchest H2664 for her as for hid treasures; H4301 Then shalt thou understand H995 the fear H3374 of the LORD, H3068 and find H4672 the knowledge H1847 of God. H430
MEM. O how love I H157 thy law! H8451 it is my meditation H7881 all the day. H3117 Thou through thy commandments H4687 hast made me wiser H2449 than mine enemies: H341 for they are ever H5769 with me. I have more understanding H7919 than all my teachers: H3925 for thy testimonies H5715 are my meditation. H7881 I understand H995 more than the ancients, H2205 because I keep H5341 thy precepts. H6490 I have refrained H3607 my feet H7272 from every evil H7451 way, H734 that I might keep H8104 thy word. H1697 I have not departed H5493 from thy judgments: H4941 for thou hast taught H3384 me. How sweet H4452 are thy words H565 unto my taste! H2441 yea, sweeter than honey H1706 to my mouth! H6310 Through thy precepts H6490 I get understanding: H995 therefore I hate H8130 every false H8267 way. H734
But his delight H2656 is in the law H8451 of the LORD; H3068 and in his law H8451 doth he meditate H1897 day H3119 and night. H3915 And he shall be like a tree H6086 planted H8362 by the rivers H6388 of water, H4325 that bringeth forth H5414 his fruit H6529 in his season; H6256 his leaf H5929 also shall not wither; H5034 and whatsoever he doeth H6213 shall prosper. H6743
This book H5612 of the law H8451 shall not depart H4185 out of thy mouth; H6310 but thou shalt meditate H1897 therein day H3119 and night, H3915 that thou mayest observe H8104 to do H6213 according to all that is written H3789 therein: for then thou shalt make H6743 thy way H1870 prosperous, H6743 and then thou shalt have good success. Commentary on 1 Timothy 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
Paul here foretels,
1Ti 4:1-5
We have here a prophecy of the apostasy of the latter times, which he had spoken of as a thing expected and taken for granted among Christians, 2 Th. 2.
1Ti 4:6-16
The apostle would have Timothy to instil into the minds of Christians such sentiments as might prevent their being seduced by the judaizing teachers. Observe, Those are good ministers of Jesus Christ who are diligent in their work; not that study to advance new notions, but that put the brethren in remembrance of those things which they have received and heard. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though you knew them, 2 Pt. 1:12. And elsewhere, I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance, 2 Pt. 3:1. And, says the apostle Jude, I will therefore put you in remembrance, Jude 5. You see that the apostles and apostolical men reckoned it a main part of their work to put their hearers in remembrance; for we are apt to forget, and slow to learn and remember, the things of God.-Nourished up in the words of faith and good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. Observe,
