3 Honour G5091 widows G5503 that are widows G5503 indeed. G3689
Then G1161 Peter G4074 arose G450 and went with G4905 them. G846 When he G3739 was come, G3854 they brought him G321 into G1519 the upper chamber: G5253 and G2532 all G3956 the widows G5503 stood by G3936 him G846 weeping, G2799 and G2532 shewing G1925 the coats G5509 and G2532 garments G2440 which G3745 Dorcas G1393 made, G4160 while she was G5607 with G3326 them. G846
And G1161 in G1722 those G5025 days, G2250 when the number G4129 of the disciples G3101 was multiplied, G4129 there arose G1096 a murmuring G1112 of the Grecians G1675 against G4314 the Hebrews, G1445 because G3754 their G846 widows G5503 were neglected G3865 in G1722 the daily G2522 ministration. G1248
And thou shalt rejoice H8055 in thy feast, H2282 thou, and thy son, H1121 and thy daughter, H1323 and thy manservant, H5650 and thy maidservant, H519 and the Levite, H3881 the stranger, H1616 and the fatherless, H3490 and the widow, H490 that are within thy gates. H8179
And thou shalt rejoice H8055 before H6440 the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 thou, and thy son, H1121 and thy daughter, H1323 and thy manservant, H5650 and thy maidservant, H519 and the Levite H3881 that is within thy gates, H8179 and the stranger, H1616 and the fatherless, H3490 and the widow, H490 that are among H7130 you, in the place H4725 which the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath chosen H977 to place H7931 his name H8034 there.
And the Levite, H3881 (because he hath no part H2506 nor inheritance H5159 with thee,) and the stranger, H1616 and the fatherless, H3490 and the widow, H490 which are within thy gates, H8179 shall come, H935 and shall eat H398 and be satisfied; H7646 that the LORD H3068 thy God H430 may bless H1288 thee in all the work H4639 of thine hand H3027 which thou doest. H6213
He doth execute H6213 the judgment H4941 of the fatherless H3490 and widow, H490 and loveth H157 the stranger, H1616 in giving H5414 him food H3899 and raiment. H8071
Honour H3513 thy father H1 and thy mother: H517 that thy days H3117 may be long H748 upon the land H127 which the LORD H3068 thy God H430 giveth H5414 thee.
But G1161 if any G1536 widow G5503 have G2192 children G5043 or G2228 nephews, G1549 let them learn G3129 first G4412 to shew piety G2151 at home, G2398 G3624 and G2532 to requite G287 G591 their parents: G4269 for G1063 that G5124 is G2076 good G2570 and G2532 acceptable G587 before G1799 God. G2316 Now G1161 she that is a widow G5503 indeed, G3689 and G2532 desolate, G3443 trusteth G1679 in G1909 God, G2316 and G2532 continueth G4357 in supplications G1162 and G2532 prayers G4335 night G3571 and G2532 day. G2250
Likewise, G3668 ye husbands, G435 dwell with G4924 them according to G2596 knowledge, G1108 giving G632 honour G5092 unto the wife, G1134 as G5613 unto the weaker G772 vessel, G4632 and G2532 as G5613 being heirs together G4789 of the grace G5485 of life; G2222 that G1519 your G5216 prayers G4335 be G1581 not G3361 hindered. G1581
Honour G5091 all G3956 men. Love G25 the brotherhood. G81 Fear G5399 God. G2316 Honour G5091 the king. G935
Pure G2513 religion G2356 and G2532 undefiled G283 before G3844 God G2316 and G2532 the Father G3962 is G2076 this, G3778 To visit G1980 the fatherless G3737 and G2532 widows G5503 in G1722 their G846 affliction, G2347 and to keep G5083 himself G1438 unspotted G784 from G575 the world. G2889
If any G1536 man G4103 or G2228 woman that believeth G4103 have G2192 widows, G5503 let them relieve G1884 them, G846 and G2532 let G916 not G3361 the church G1577 be charged; G916 that G2443 it may relieve G1884 them that are widows G5503 indeed. G3689 Let G515 the elders G4245 that rule G4291 well G2573 be counted worthy G515 of double G1362 honour, G5092 especially G3122 they who labour G2872 in G1722 the word G3056 and G2532 doctrine. G1319
Let G2639 not G3361 a widow G5503 be taken into the number G2639 under G1640 threescore G1835 years old, G2094 having been G1096 the wife G1135 of one G1520 man, G435 Well reported of G3140 for G1722 good G2570 works; G2041 if G1487 she have brought up G5044 children, if G1487 she have lodged strangers, G3580 if G1487 she have washed G3538 the saints' G40 feet, G4228 if G1487 she have relieved G1884 the afflicted, G2346 if G1487 she have diligently followed G1872 every G3956 good G18 work. G2041 But G1161 the younger G3501 widows G5503 refuse: G3868 for G1063 when G3752 they have begun to wax wanton against G2691 Christ, G5547 they will G2309 marry; G1060
Nor G3777 of G1537 men G444 sought G2212 we glory, G1391 neither G3777 of G575 you, G5216 nor G3777 yet of G575 others, G243 when we might G1410 have been G1511 burdensome, G1722 G922 as G5613 the apostles G652 of Christ. G5547
Now G1161 when G5613 he came nigh G1448 to the gate G4439 of the city, G4172 behold, G2532 G2400 there was G1580 a dead man G2348 carried out, G1580 the only G3439 son G5207 of his G846 mother, G3384 and G2532 she G846 was G2258 a widow: G5503 and G2532 much G2425 people G3793 of the city G4172 was G2258 with G4862 her. G846
But G1161 woe G3759 unto you, G5213 scribes G1122 and G2532 Pharisees, G5330 hypocrites! G5273 for G3754 ye shut up G2808 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 against G1715 men: G444 for G1063 ye G5210 neither G3761 go in G1525 yourselves, neither G3756 suffer ye G863 them that are entering G1525 to go in. G1525
The LORD H3068 preserveth H8104 the strangers; H1616 he relieveth H5749 the fatherless H3490 and widow: H490 but the way H1870 of the wicked H7563 he turneth upside down. H5791

Commentary on 1 Timothy 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
Here the apostle,
1Ti 5:1-2
Here the apostle gives rules to Timothy, and in him to other ministers, in reproving. Ministers are reprovers by office; it is a part, though the least pleasing part, of their office; they are to preach the word, to reprove and rebuke, 2 Tim. 4:2. A great difference is to be made in our reproofs, according to the age, quality, and other circumstances, of the persons rebuked; thus, and elder in age or office must be entreated as a father; on some have compassion, making a difference, Jude 22. Now the rule is,
1Ti 5:3-16
Directions are here given concerning the taking of widows into the number of those who were employed by the church and had maintenance from the church: Honour widows that are widows indeed. Honour them, that is, maintain them, admit them into office. There was in those times an office in the church in which widows were employed, and that was to tend the sick and the aged, to look to them by the direction of the deacons. We read of the care taken of widows immediately upon the first forming of the Christian church (Acts 6:1), where the Grecians thought their widows were neglected in the daily ministration and provision made for poor widows. The general rule is to honour widows that are widows indeed, to maintain them, to relieve them with respect and tenderness.
