8 But G1161 if any G1536 provide G4306 not G3756 for his own, G2398 and G2532 specially G3122 for those of his own house, G3609 he hath denied G720 the faith, G4102 and G2532 is G2076 worse than G5501 an infidel. G571
Is it not to deal H6536 thy bread H3899 to the hungry, H7457 and that thou bring H935 the poor H6041 that are cast out H4788 to thy house? H1004 when thou seest H7200 the naked, H6174 that thou cover H3680 him; and that thou hide H5956 not thyself from thine own flesh? H1320
Behold, G2400 the third time G5154 I am G2192 ready G2093 to come G2064 to G4314 you; G5209 and G2532 I will G2655 not G3756 be burdensome G2655 to you: G5216 for G1063 I seek G2212 not G3756 yours, G5216 but G235 you: G5209 for G1063 the children G5043 ought G3784 not G3756 to lay up G2343 for the parents, G1118 but G235 the parents G1118 for the children. G5043
For it was little H4592 which thou hadst before I H6440 came, and it is now increased H6555 unto a multitude; H7230 and the LORD H3068 hath blessed H1288 thee since my coming: H7272 and now when H4970 shall I provide H6213 for mine own house H1004 also?
If G1487 ye G5210 then, G3767 being G5607 evil, G4190 know G1492 how to give G1325 good G18 gifts G1390 unto your G5216 children, G5043 how much G4214 more G3123 shall your G5216 Father G3962 which G3588 is in G1722 heaven G3772 give G1325 good things G18 to them that ask G154 him? G846
If G1161 a son G5207 shall ask G154 bread G740 of any of you G5216 that is a father, G3962 G5101 will he give G1929 G3361 him G846 a stone? G3037 or G1499 if he ask a fish, G2486 will he G1929 for G473 a fish G2486 give G1929 G3361 him G846 a serpent? G3789 Or G2228 G2532 if G1437 he shall ask G154 an egg, G5609 will he offer G3361 G1929 him G846 a scorpion? G4651 If G1487 ye G5210 then, G3767 being G5225 evil, G4190 know G1492 how to give G1325 good G18 gifts G1390 unto your G5216 children: G5043 how much G4214 more G3123 shall G1325 your heavenly G3772 Father G3962 G1537 give G1325 the Holy G40 Spirit G4151 to them that ask G154 him? G846
And G1161 what G5101 concord G4857 hath Christ G5547 with G4314 Belial? G955 or G2228 what G5101 part G3310 hath he that believeth G4103 with G3326 an infidel? G571
I know G1492 thy G4675 works: G2041 behold, G2400 I have set G1325 before G1799 thee G4675 an open G455 door, G2374 and G2532 no man G3762 can G1410 shut G2808 it: G846 for G3754 thou hast G2192 a little G3398 strength, G1411 and G2532 hast kept G5083 my G3450 word, G3056 and G2532 hast G720 not G3756 denied G720 my G3450 name. Commentary on 1 Timothy 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
Here the apostle,
1Ti 5:1-2
Here the apostle gives rules to Timothy, and in him to other ministers, in reproving. Ministers are reprovers by office; it is a part, though the least pleasing part, of their office; they are to preach the word, to reprove and rebuke, 2 Tim. 4:2. A great difference is to be made in our reproofs, according to the age, quality, and other circumstances, of the persons rebuked; thus, and elder in age or office must be entreated as a father; on some have compassion, making a difference, Jude 22. Now the rule is,

Directions are here given concerning the taking of widows into the number of those who were employed by the church and had maintenance from the church: Honour widows that are widows indeed. Honour them, that is, maintain them, admit them into office. There was in those times an office in the church in which widows were employed, and that was to tend the sick and the aged, to look to them by the direction of the deacons. We read of the care taken of widows immediately upon the first forming of the Christian church (Acts 6:1), where the Grecians thought their widows were neglected in the daily ministration and provision made for poor widows. The general rule is to honour widows that are widows indeed, to maintain them, to relieve them with respect and tenderness.
