8 I speak G3004 not G3756 by G2596 commandment, G2003 but G235 by occasion G1223 of the forwardness G4710 of others, G2087 and G2532 to prove G1381 the sincerity G1103 of your G5212 love. G26
But G1161 I speak G3004 this G5124 by G2596 permission, G4774 and not G3756 of G2596 commandment. G2003
Wherefore G3767 shew ye G1731 to G1519 them, G846 and G2532 before G1519 G4383 the churches, G1577 the proof G1732 of your G5216 love, G26 and G2532 of our G2257 boasting G2746 on G5228 your G5216 behalf. G5228
But G1161 whoso G3739 G302 hath G2192 this world's G2889 good, G979 and G2532 seeth G2334 his G846 brother G80 have G2192 need, G5532 and G2532 shutteth up G2808 his G846 bowels G4698 of compassion from G575 him, G846 how G4459 dwelleth G3306 the love G26 of God G2316 in G1722 him? G846 My G3450 little children, G5040 let us G25 not G3361 love G25 in word, G3056 neither G3366 in tongue; G1100 but G235 in deed G2041 and G2532 in truth. G225 And G2532 hereby G1722 G5129 we know G1097 that G3754 we are G2070 of G1537 the truth, G225 and G2532 shall assure G3982 our G2257 hearts G2588 before G1715 him. G846
Seeing ye have purified G48 your G5216 souls G5590 in G1722 obeying G5218 the truth G225 through G1223 the Spirit G4151 unto G1519 unfeigned G505 love of the brethren, G5360 see that ye love G25 one another G240 with G1537 a pure G2513 heart G2588 fervently: G1619
What G5101 doth it profit, G3786 my G3450 brethren, G80 though G1437 a man G5100 say G3004 he hath G2192 faith, G4102 and G1161 have G2192 not G3361 works? G2041 can G1410 G3361 faith G4102 save G4982 him? G846 If G1437 G1161 a brother G80 or G2228 sister G79 be G5225 naked, G1131 and G2532 destitute G3007 G5600 of daily G2184 food, G5160 And G1161 one G5100 of G1537 you G5216 say G2036 unto them, G846 Depart G5217 in G1722 peace, G1515 be ye warmed G2328 and G2532 filled; G5526 notwithstanding G1161 ye give G1325 them G846 not G3361 those things which are needful G2006 to the body; G4983 what G5101 doth it profit? G3786
Grace G5485 be with G3326 all G3956 them that love G25 our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 in G1722 sincerity. G861 Amen. G281
For G1063 I know G1492 the forwardness of G4288 your G5216 mind, G4288 for which G3739 I boast G2744 of G5228 you G5216 to them of Macedonia, G3110 that G3754 Achaia G882 was ready G3903 a year G4070 ago; G575 and G2532 your G5216 zeal G2205 G1537 hath provoked G2042 very many. G4119
Moreover, G1161 brethren, G80 we do G1107 you G5213 to wit G1107 of the grace G5485 of God G2316 bestowed G1325 on G1722 the churches G1577 of Macedonia; G3109 How that G3754 in G1722 a great G4183 trial G1382 of affliction G2347 the abundance G4050 of their G846 joy G5479 and G2532 their G846 deep G899 poverty G2596 G4432 abounded G4052 unto G1519 the riches G4149 of their G846 liberality. G572 For G3754 to G2596 their power, G1411 I bear record, G3140 yea, and G2532 beyond G5228 their power G1411 they were willing of themselves; G830
But G1161 to the rest G3062 speak G3004 I, G1473 not G3756 the Lord: G2962 If any G1536 brother G80 hath G2192 a wife G1135 that believeth not, G571 and G2532 she G846 be pleased G4909 to dwell G3611 with G3326 him, G846 let him G863 not G3361 put G863 her G846 away. G863
Let love G26 be without dissimulation. G505 Abhor G655 that which is evil; G4190 cleave G2853 to that which is good. G18
Now G1161 if G1487 the fall G3900 of them G846 be the riches G4149 of the world, G2889 and G2532 the diminishing G2275 of them G846 the riches G4149 of the Gentiles; G1484 how G4214 much more G3123 their G846 fulness? G4138 For G1063 I speak G3004 to you G5213 Gentiles, G1484 inasmuch as G1909 G3745 G3303 I G1473 am G1510 the apostle G652 of the Gentiles, G1484 I magnify G1392 mine G3450 office: G1248 If by any means G1513 G4458 I may provoke to emulation G3863 them which are my G3450 flesh, G4561 and G2532 might save G4982 some G5100 of G1537 them. G846
And they come H935 unto thee as the people H5971 cometh, H3996 and they sit H3427 before H6440 thee as my people, H5971 and they hear H8085 thy words, H1697 but they will not do H6213 them: for with their mouth H6310 they shew H6213 much love, H5690 but their heart H3820 goeth H1980 after H310 their covetousness. Commentary on 2 Corinthians 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this and the following chapter Paul is exhorting and directing the Corinthians about a particular work of charity-to relieve the necessities of the poor saints at Jerusalem and in Judea, according to the good example of the churches in Macedonia, Rom. 15:26. The Christians at Jerusalem, through war, famine, and persecution, had become poor, many of them had fallen into decay, and perhaps most of them were but poor when they first embraced Christianity; for Christ said, "The poor receive the gospel.' Now Paul, though he was the apostle of the Gentiles, had a fonder regard, and kind concern, for those among the Jews who were converted to the Christian faith; and, though many of them had not so much affection to the Gentile converts as they ought to have had, yet the apostle would have the Gentiles to be kind to them, and stirred them up to contribute liberally for their relief. Upon this subject he is very copious, and writes very affectingly. In this eighth chapter he acquaints the Corinthians with, and commends, the good example of the Macedonians in this work of charity, and that Titus was sent to Corinth to collect their bounty (v. 1-6). He the proceeds to urge this duty with several cogent arguments (v. 7-15), and commends the persons who were employed in this affair (v. 16-24).
2Cr 8:1-6
Observe here,
2Cr 8:7-15
In these verses the apostle uses several cogent arguments to stir up the Corinthians to this good work of charity.
2Cr 8:16-24
In these verses the apostle commends the brethren who were sent to them to collect their charity; and as it were, gives them letters credential, that, if they were enquired after (v. 23), if any should be inquisitive or suspicious concerning them, it might be known who they were and how safely they might be trusted.
