3 And it came to pass at the seven H7651 years' H8141 end, H7097 that the woman H802 returned H7725 out of the land H776 of the Philistines: H6430 and she went forth H3318 to cry H6817 unto the king H4428 for her house H1004 and for her land. H7704
And when the woman H802 of Tekoah H8621 spake H559 to the king, H4428 she fell H5307 on her face H639 to the ground, H776 and did obeisance, H7812 and said, H559 Help, H3467 O king. H4428
And he said H559 unto him, Say H559 now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful H2729 for us with all this care; H2731 what is to be done H6213 for thee? wouldest H3426 thou be spoken H1696 for to the king, H4428 or to the captain H8269 of the host? H6635 And she answered, H559 I dwell H3427 among H8432 mine own people. H5971
And when the king H4428 asked H7592 the woman, H802 she told H5608 him. So the king H4428 appointed H5414 unto her a certain H259 officer, H5631 saying, H559 Restore H7725 all that was hers, and all the fruits H8393 of the field H7704 since the day H3117 that she left H5800 the land, H776 even until now.
And G1161 there was G2258 a widow G5503 in G1722 that G1565 city; G4172 and G2532 she came G2064 unto G4314 him, G846 saying, G3004 Avenge G1556 me G3165 of G575 mine G3450 adversary. G476 And G2532 he would G2309 not G3756 for G1909 a while: G5550 but G1161 afterward G5023 G3326 he said G2036 within G1722 himself, G1438 Though G1499 I fear G5399 not G3756 God, G2316 nor G2532 G3756 regard G1788 man; G444 Yet G1065 because G1223 this G5026 widow G5503 troubleth G3930 G2873 me, G3427 I will avenge G1556 her, G846 lest G3363 by G1519 her continual G5056 coming G2064 she weary G5299 me. Commentary on 2 Kings 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
The passages of story recorded in this chapter oblige us to look back.
2Ki 8:1-6
Here we have,
2Ki 8:7-15
Here,
2Ki 8:16-24
We have here a brief account of the life and reign of Jehoram (or Joram), one of the worst of the kings of Judah, but the son and successor of Jehoshaphat, one of the best. Note,
Concerning this Jehoram observe,
2Ki 8:25-29
As among common persons there are some that we call little men, who make no figure, are little regarded, as less valued, so among kings there are some whom, in comparison with others, we may call little kings. This Ahaziah was one of these; he looks mean in the history, and in God's account vile, because wicked. It is too plain an evidence of the affinity between Jehoshaphat and Ahab that they had the same names in their families at the same time, in which, we may suppose, they designed to compliment one another. Ahab had two sons, Ahaziah and Jehoram, who reigned successively; Jehoshaphat had a son and grandson names Jehoshaphat had a son and grandson names Jehoram and Ahaziah, who, in like manner, reigned successively. Names indeed do not make natures, but it was a bad omen to Jehoshaphat's family to borrow names from Ahab's; or, if he lent the names to that wretched family, he could not communicate with them the devotion of their significations, Ahaziah-Taking hold of the Lord, and Jehoram-The Lord exalted. Ahaziah king of Israel had reigned but two years, Ahaziah king of Judah reigned but one. We are here told that his relation to Ahab's family was the occasion,
