8 (For G1063 that righteous man G1342 dwelling G1460 among G1722 them, G846 in seeing G990 and G2532 hearing, G189 vexed G928 his righteous G1342 soul G5590 from day G2250 to G1537 day G2250 with their unlawful G459 deeds;) G2041
I beheld H7200 the transgressors, H898 and was grieved; H6962 because they kept H8104 not thy word. H565
And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto him, Go through H5674 the midst H8432 of the city, H5892 through the midst H8432 of Jerusalem, H3389 and set H8427 a mark H8420 upon the foreheads H4696 of the men H582 that sigh H584 and that cry H602 for all the abominations H8441 that be done H6213 in the midst H8432 thereof.
Slay H2026 utterly H4889 old H2205 and young, H970 both maids, H1330 and little children, H2945 and women: H802 but come not near H5066 any man H376 upon whom is the mark; H8420 and begin H2490 at my sanctuary. H4720 Then they began H2490 at the ancient H2205 men H582 which were before H6440 the house. H1004
And now we call H833 the proud H2086 happy; H833 yea, they that work H6213 wickedness H7564 are set up; H1129 yea, they that tempt H974 God H430 are even delivered. H4422 Then they that feared H3373 the LORD H3068 spake often H1696 one H376 to another: H7453 and the LORD H3068 hearkened, H7181 and heard H8085 it, and a book H5612 of remembrance H2146 was written H3789 before H6440 him for them that feared H3373 the LORD, H3068 and that thought H2803 upon his name. H8034 And they shall be mine, saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 in that day H3117 when I make up H6213 my jewels; H5459 and I will spare H2550 them, as a man H376 spareth H2550 his own son H1121 that serveth H5647 him.
Knowing G1492 this, G5124 that G3754 the law G3551 is G2749 not G3756 made G2749 for a righteous man, G1342 but G1161 for the lawless G459 and G2532 disobedient, G506 for the ungodly G765 and G2532 for sinners, G268 for unholy G462 and G2532 profane, G952 for murderers of fathers G3964 and G2532 murderers of mothers, G3389 for manslayers, G409

Commentary on 2 Peter 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
The apostle, having in the foregoing chapter exhorted them to proceed and advance in the Christian race, now comes to remove, as much as in him lay, what he could not but apprehend would hinder their complying with his exhortation. He therefore gives them fair warning of false teachers, by whom they might be in danger of being seduced. To prevent this,
2Pe 2:1-3
2Pe 2:3-6
Men are apt to think that a reprieve is the forerunner of a pardon, and that if judgment be not speedily executed it is, or will be, certainly reversed. But the apostle tells us that how successful and prosperous soever false teachers may be, and that for a time, yet their judgment lingereth not. God has determined long ago how he will deal with them. Such unbelievers, who endeavour to turn others from the faith, are condemned already, and the wrath of God abideth on them. The righteous Judge will speedily take vengeance; the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. To prove this assertion, here are several examples of the righteous judgment of God, in taking vengeance on sinners, proposed to our serious consideration.
2Pe 2:7-9
When God sends destruction on the ungodly, he commands deliverance for the righteous; and, if he rain fire and brimstone on the wicked, he will cover the head of the just, and they shall be hid in the day of his anger. This we have an instance of in his preserving Lot. Here observe,
2Pe 2:10-22
The apostle's design being to warn us of, and arm us against, seducers, he now returns to discourse more particularly of them, and give us an account of their character and conduct, which abundantly justifies the righteous Judge of the world in reserving them in an especial manner for the most severe and heavy doom, as Cain is taken under special protection that he might be kept for uncommon vengeance. But why will God thus deal with these false teachers? This he shows in what follows.
