39 And the soul of king H4428 David H1732 longed H3615 to go forth H3318 unto Absalom: H53 for he was comforted H5162 concerning Amnon, H550 seeing he was dead. H4191
And Isaac H3327 brought her H935 into his mother H517 Sarah's H8283 tent, H168 and took H3947 Rebekah, H7259 and she became his wife; H802 and he loved H157 her: and Isaac H3327 was comforted H5162 after H310 his mother's H517 death.
And all his sons H1121 and all his daughters H1323 rose up H6965 to comfort H5162 him; but he refused H3985 to be comforted; H5162 and he said, H559 For I will go down H3381 into the grave H7585 unto my son H1121 mourning. H57 Thus his father H1 wept H1058 for him.
And now, though thou wouldest needs H1980 be gone, H1980 because thou sore H3700 longedst H3700 after thy father's H1 house, H1004 yet wherefore hast thou stolen H1589 my gods? H430
Thy sons H1121 and thy daughters H1323 shall be given H5414 unto another H312 people, H5971 and thine eyes H5869 shall look, H7200 and fail H3616 with longing for them all the day H3117 long: and there shall be no might H410 in thine hand. H3027
But when David H1732 saw H7200 that his servants H5650 whispered, H3907 David H1732 perceived H995 that the child H3206 was dead: H4191 therefore David H1732 said H559 unto his servants, H5650 Is the child H3206 dead? H4191 And they said, H559 He is dead. H4191 Then David H1732 arose H6965 from the earth, H776 and washed, H7364 and anointed H5480 himself, and changed H2498 his apparel, H8071 and came H935 into the house H1004 of the LORD, H3068 and worshipped: H7812 then he came H935 to his own house; H1004 and when he required, H7592 they set H7760 bread H3899 before him, and he did eat. H398 Then said H559 his servants H5650 unto him, What thing H1697 is this that thou hast done? H6213 thou didst fast H6684 and weep H1058 for the child, H3206 while it was alive; H2416 but when the child H3206 was dead, H4191 thou didst rise H6965 and eat H398 bread. H3899 And he said, H559 While the child H3206 was yet alive, H2416 I fasted H6684 and wept: H1058 for I said, H559 Who can tell H3045 whether GOD H3068 will be gracious H2603 H2603 to me, that the child H3206 may live? H2416 But now he is dead, H4191 wherefore should I fast? H6684 can H3201 I bring him back again? H7725 I shall go H1980 to him, but he shall not return H7725 to me.
My soul H5315 longeth, H3700 yea, even fainteth H3615 for the courts H2691 of the LORD: H3068 my heart H3820 and my flesh H1320 crieth out H7442 for the living H2416 God. H410

Commentary on 2 Samuel 13 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 13
The righteous God had lately told David, by Nathan the prophet, that, to chastise him for his son in the matter of Uriah, he would "raise up evil against him out of his own house,' (ch. 12:11). And here, in the very next chapter, we find the evil beginning to rise; henceforward he was followed with one trouble after another, which made the latter part of his reign less glorious and pleasant than the former part. Thus God chastened him with the rod of men, yet assured him that his "loving-kindness he would not utterly take away.' Adultery and murder were David's sins, and those sins among his children (Amnon defiling his sister Tamar, and Absalom murdering his brother Amnon) were the beginnings of his punishment, and the more grievous because he had reason to fear that his bad example might help to bring them to these wickednesses. In this chapter we have,
Both were great griefs to David, and the more because he was unwittingly made accessory to both, by sending Tamar to Amnon and Amnon to Absalom.
2Sa 13:1-20
We have here a particular account of the abominable wickedness of Amnon in ravishing his sister, a subject not fit to be enlarged upon nor indeed to be mentioned without blushing, that ever any man should be so vile, especially that a son of David should be so. Amnon's character, we have reason to think, was bad in other things; if he had not forsaken God, he would never have been given up to these vile affections. Godly parents have often been afflicted with wicked children; grace does not run in the blood, but corruption does. We do not find that David's children imitated him in his devotion; but his false steps they trod in, and in those did much worse, and repented not. Parents know not how fatal the consequences may be if in any instance they give their children bad examples. Observe the steps of Amnon's sin.
2Sa 13:21-29
What Solomon says of the beginning of strife is as true of the beginning of all sin, it is as the letting forth of water; when once the flood-gates are plucked up, an inundation follows; one mischief begets another, and it is hard to say what shall be in the end thereof.
