18 Now then do H6213 it: for the LORD H3068 hath spoken H559 of David, H1732 saying, H559 By the hand H3027 of my servant H5650 David H1732 I will save H3467 my people H5971 Israel H3478 out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines, H6430 and out of the hand H3027 of all their enemies. H341
And Samuel H8050 said H559 unto him, The LORD H3068 hath rent H7167 the kingdom H4468 of Israel H3478 from thee this day, H3117 and hath given H5414 it to a neighbour H7453 of thine, that is better H2896 than thou.
So do H6213 God H430 to Abner, H74 and more also, H3254 except, as the LORD H3068 hath sworn H7650 to David, H1732 even so I do H6213 to him;
To morrow H4279 about this time H6256 I will send H7971 thee a man H376 out of the land H776 of Benjamin, H1144 and thou shalt anoint H4886 him to be captain H5057 over my people H5971 Israel, H3478 that he may save H3467 my people H5971 out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines: H6430 for I have looked H7200 upon my people, H5971 because their cry H6818 is come H935 unto me.
But now thy kingdom H4467 shall not continue: H6965 the LORD H3068 hath sought H1245 him a man H376 after his own heart, H3824 and the LORD H3068 hath commanded H6680 him to be captain H5057 over his people, H5971 because thou hast not kept H8104 that which the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 thee.
And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto Samuel, H8050 How long wilt thou mourn H56 for Saul, H7586 seeing I have rejected H3988 him from reigning H4427 over Israel? H3478 fill H4390 thine horn H7161 with oil, H8081 and go, H3212 I will send H7971 thee to Jesse H3448 the Bethlehemite: H1022 for I have provided H7200 me a king H4428 among his sons. H1121
And he sent, H7971 and brought him in. H935 Now he was ruddy, H132 and withal H5973 of a beautiful H3303 countenance, H5869 and goodly H2896 to look to. H7210 And the LORD H3068 said, H559 Arise, H6965 anoint H4886 him: for this is he. Then Samuel H8050 took H3947 the horn H7161 of oil, H8081 and anointed H4886 him in the midst H7130 of his brethren: H251 and the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 came H6743 upon David H1732 from that day H3117 forward. H4605 So Samuel H8050 rose up, H6965 and went H3212 to Ramah. H7414
I have made H3772 a covenant H1285 with my chosen, H972 I have sworn H7650 unto David H1732 my servant, H5650 Thy seed H2233 will I establish H3559 for H5704 ever, H5769 and build up H1129 thy throne H3678 to all H1755 generations. H1755 Selah. H5542
Then thou spakest H1696 in vision H2377 to thy holy one, H2623 and saidst, H559 I have laid H7737 help H5828 upon one that is mighty; H1368 I have exalted H7311 one chosen H977 out of the people. H5971 I have found H4672 David H1732 my servant; H5650 with my holy H6944 oil H8081 have I anointed H4886 him: With whom my hand H3027 shall be established: H3559 mine arm H2220 also shall strengthen H553 him. The enemy H341 shall not exact H5378 upon him; nor the son H1121 of wickedness H5766 afflict H6031 him. And I will beat down H3807 his foes H6862 before his face, H6440 and plague H5062 them that hate H8130 him.
Nevertheless G3676 G3305 among G1537 the chief rulers G758 also G2532 many G4183 believed G4100 on G1519 him; G846 but G235 because G1223 of the Pharisees G5330 they did G3670 not G3756 confess G3670 him, lest G3363 they should be G1096 put out of the synagogue: G656 For G1063 they loved G25 the praise G1391 of men G444 more G3123 than G2260 the praise G1391 of God. Commentary on 2 Samuel 3 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 3
The battle between Joab and Abner did not end the controversy between the two houses of Saul and David, but it is in this chapter working towards a period. Here is,
2Sa 3:1-6
Here is,
Thus was David's house strengthened; but it was Abner that made himself strong for the house of Saul, which is mentioned (v. 6) to show that, if he failed them, they would fall of course.
2Sa 3:7-21
Here,
2Sa 3:22-39
We have here an account of the murder of Abner by Joab, and David's deep resentment of it.
