9 Wherein G1722 G3739 I suffer trouble, G2553 as G5613 an evil doer, G2557 even unto G3360 bonds; G1199 but G235 the word G3056 of God G2316 is G1210 not G3756 bound. G1210
Be G1870 not G3361 thou G1870 therefore G3767 ashamed G1870 of the testimony G3142 of our G2257 Lord, G2962 nor G3366 of me G1691 his G846 prisoner: G1198 but G235 be thou partaker of the afflictions G4777 of the gospel G2098 according to G2596 the power G1411 of God; G2316
Even as G2531 it is G2076 meet G1342 for me G1698 to think G5426 this G5124 of G5228 you G5216 all, G3956 because G1223 I have G2192 you G5209 in G1722 my G3165 heart; G2588 inasmuch as both G5037 in G1722 my G3450 bonds, G1199 and G2532 in the defence G627 and G2532 confirmation G951 of the gospel, G2098 ye G5209 all G3956 are G5607 partakers G4791 of my G3450 grace. G5485
For G1063 I G1473 will shew G5263 him G846 how great things G3745 he G846 must G1163 suffer G3958 for G5228 my G3450 name's sake. G3686 G5228
Notwithstanding G1161 the Lord G2962 stood G3936 with me, G3427 and G2532 strengthened G1743 me; G3165 that G2443 by G1223 me G1700 the preaching G2782 might be fully known, G4135 and G2532 that all G3956 the Gentiles G1484 might hear: G191 and G2532 I was delivered G4506 out of G1537 the mouth G4750 of the lion. G3023
For G1223 the which G3739 cause G156 I G3958 also G2532 suffer G3958 these things: G5023 nevertheless G235 I am G1870 not G3756 ashamed: G1870 for G1063 I know G1492 whom G3739 I have believed, G4100 and G2532 am persuaded G3982 that G3754 he is G2076 able G1415 to keep G5442 that which I G3450 have committed unto him G3866 against G1519 that G1565 day. G2250
Finally, G3063 brethren, G80 pray G4336 for G4012 us, G2257 that G2443 the word G3056 of the Lord G2962 may have free course, G5143 and G2532 be glorified, G1392 even G2532 as G2531 it is with G4314 you: G5209
Withal G260 praying G4336 also G2532 for G4012 us, G2257 that G2443 God G2316 would open G455 unto us G2254 a door G2374 of utterance, G3056 to speak G2980 the mystery G3466 of Christ, G5547 for G1223 which G3739 I am G1210 also G2532 in bonds: G1210
And G2532 for G5228 me, G1700 that G2443 utterance G3056 may be given G1325 unto me, G3427 that I may open G1722 G457 my G3450 mouth G4750 boldly, G1722 G3954 to make known G1107 the mystery G3466 of the gospel, G2098 For G5228 which G3739 I am an ambassador G4243 in G1722 bonds: G254 that G2443 therein G1722 G846 I may speak boldly, G3955 as G5613 I G3165 ought G1163 to speak. G2980
For this G5127 cause G5484 I G1473 Paul, G3972 the prisoner G1198 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 for G5228 you G5216 Gentiles, G1484
Or G1535 unto governors, G2232 as G5613 unto them that are sent G3992 by G1223 him G846 for G1519 G3303 the punishment G1557 of evildoers, G2555 and G1161 for the praise G1868 of them that do well. G17
Having G2192 your G5216 conversation G391 honest G2570 among G1722 the Gentiles: G1484 that, G2443 whereas G1722 G3739 they speak against G2635 you G5216 as G5613 evildoers, G2555 they may G1392 by G1537 your good G2570 works, G2041 which they shall behold, G2029 glorify G1392 God G2316 in G1722 the day G2250 of visitation. G1984
The salutation G783 by the hand G5495 of me G1699 Paul. G3972 Remember G3421 my G3450 bonds. G1199 Grace G5485 be with G3326 you. G5216 Amen. G281
But G1161 I would G1014 ye G5209 should understand, G1097 brethren, G80 that G3754 the things which happened unto G2596 me G1691 have fallen out G2064 rather G3123 unto G1519 the furtherance G4297 of the gospel; G2098 So that G5620 my G3450 bonds G1199 in G1722 Christ G5547 are G1096 manifest G5318 in G1722 all G3650 the palace, G4232 and G2532 in all G3956 other G3062 places; And G2532 many G4119 of the brethren G80 in G1722 the Lord, G2962 waxing confident G3982 by my G3450 bonds, G1199 are much more G4056 bold G5111 to speak G2980 the word G3056 without fear. Commentary on 2 Timothy 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
In this chapter our apostle gives Timothy many exhortations and directions, which may be of great use to other, both ministers and Christians, for whom they were designed as well as for him.
2Ti 2:1-7
Here Paul encourages Timothy to constancy and perseverance in his work: Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, v. 1. Observe, Those who have work to do for God must stir up themselves to do it, and strengthen themselves for it. Being strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus may be understood in opposition to the weakness of grace. Where there is the truth of grace there must be a labouring after the strength of grace. As our trials increase, we have need to grow stronger and stronger in that which is good; our faith stronger, our resolution stronger, our love to God and Christ stronger. Or it may be understood in opposition to our being strong in our own strength: "Be strong, not confiding in thy own sufficiency, but in the grace that is in Jesus Christ.' Compare Eph. 6:10, Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. When Peter promised rather to die for Christ than to deny him he was strong in his own strength; had he been strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, he would have kept his standing better. Observe,
The apostle further commends what he had said to the attention of Timothy, and expresses his desire and hope respecting him: Consider what I say, and the Lord give thee understanding in all things, v. 7. Here,
2Ti 2:8-13
2Ti 2:14-18
Having thus encouraged Timothy to suffer, he comes in the next place to direct him in his work.
2Ti 2:19-21
Here we see what we may comfort ourselves with, in reference to this, and the little errors and heresies that both infect and infest the church, and do mischief.
2Ti 2:22-26
