G3165 He that receiveth G1209 a prophet G4396 in G1519 the name G3686 of a prophet G4396 shall receive G2983 a prophet's G4396 reward; G3408 and G2532 he that receiveth G2983 a righteous man G1342 in G1519 the name G3686 of a righteous man G1342 shall receive G1209 a righteous man's G1342 reward. Matthew 20:20-28 STRONG

Then G5119 came G4334 to him G846 the mother G3384 of Zebedee's G2199 children G5207 with G3326 her G846 sons, G5207 worshipping G4352 him, and G2532 desiring G154 a certain G5100 thing G3844 of him. G846 And G1161 he said G2036 unto her, G846 What G5101 wilt thou? G2309 She saith G3004 unto him, G846 Grant G2036 that G2443 these G3778 my G3450 two G1417 sons G5207 may sit, G2523 the one G1520 on G1537 thy G4675 right hand, G1188 and G2532 the other G1520 on G1537 the left, G2176 in G1722 thy G4675 kingdom. G932 But G1161 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said, G2036 Ye know G1492 not G3756 what G5101 ye ask. G154 Are ye able G1410 to drink G4095 of the cup G4221 that G3739 I G1473 shall G3195 drink of, G4095 and G2532 to be baptized G907 with the baptism G908 that G3739 I G1473 am baptized with? G907 They say G3004 unto him, G846 We are able. G1410 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto them, G846 Ye shall drink G4095 indeed G3303 of my G3450 cup, G4221 and G2532 be baptized G907 with the baptism G908 that G3739 I G1473 am baptized with: G907 but G1161 to sit G2523 on G1537 my G3450 right hand, G1188 and G2532 on G1537 my G3450 left, G2176 is G2076 not G3756 mine G1699 to give, G1325 but G235 it shall be given to them for whom G3739 it is prepared G2090 of G5259 my G3450 Father. G3962 And G2532 when the ten G1176 heard G191 it, they were moved with indignation G23 against G4012 the two G1417 brethren. G80 But G1161 Jesus G2424 called G4341 them G846 unto him, and said, G2036 Ye know G1492 that G3754 the princes G758 of the Gentiles G1484 exercise dominion over G2634 them, G846 and G2532 they that are great G3173 exercise authority upon G2715 them. G846 But G1161 it shall G2071 not G3756 be G2071 so G3779 among G1722 you: G5213 but G235 whosoever G3739 G1437 will G2309 be G1096 great G3173 among G1722 you, G5213 let him be G2077 your G5216 minister; G1249 And G2532 whosoever G3739 G1437 will G2309 be G1511 chief G4413 among G1722 you, G5213 let him be G2077 your G5216 servant: G1401 Even as G5618 the Son G5207 of man G444 came G2064 not G3756 to be ministered unto, G1247 but G235 to minister, G1247 and G2532 to give G1325 his G846 life G5590 a ransom G3083 for G473 many. Matthew 23:4-8 STRONG

For G1063 they bind G1195 heavy G926 burdens G5413 and G2532 grievous to be borne, G1419 and G2532 lay G2007 them on G1909 men's G444 shoulders; G5606 but G1161 they themselves will G2309 not G3756 move G2795 them G846 with one of their G846 fingers. G1147 But G1161 all G3956 their G846 works G2041 they do G4160 for G4314 to be seen G2300 of men: G444 G1161 they make broad G4115 their G846 phylacteries, G5440 and G2532 enlarge G3170 the borders G2899 of their G846 garments, G2440 And G5037 love G5368 the uppermost rooms G4411 at G1722 feasts, G1173 and G2532 the chief seats G4410 in G1722 the synagogues, G4864 And G2532 greetings G783 in G1722 the markets, G58 and G2532 to be called G2564 of G5259 men, G444 Rabbi, G4461 Rabbi. G4461 But G1161 be G2564 not G3361 ye G5210 called G2564 Rabbi: G4461 for G1063 one G1520 is G2076 your G5216 Master, G2519 even Christ; G5547 and G1161 all G3956 ye G5210 are G2075 brethren. G80

But G1161 they held their peace: G4623 for G1063 by G1722 the way G3598 they had disputed G1256 among G4314 themselves, G240 who G5101 should be the greatest. G3187

Mark 10:35-45 STRONG

And G2532 James G2385 and G2532 John, G2491 the sons G5207 of Zebedee, G2199 come G4365 unto him, G846 saying, G3004 Master, G1320 we would G2309 that G2443 thou shouldest do G4160 for us G2254 whatsoever G3739 G1437 we shall desire. G154 And G1161 he said G2036 unto them, G846 What G5101 would G2309 ye that I G3165 should do G4160 for you? G5213 G1161 They said G2036 unto him, G846 Grant G1325 unto us G2254 that G2443 we may sit, G2523 one G1520 on G1537 thy G4675 right hand, G1188 and G2532 the other G1520 on G1537 thy G4675 left hand, G2176 in G1722 thy G4675 glory. G1391 But G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 Ye know G1492 not G3756 what G5101 ye ask: G154 can ye G1410 drink G4095 of the cup G4221 that G3739 I G1473 drink of? G4095 and G2532 be baptized G907 with the baptism G908 that G3739 I G1473 am baptized with? G907 And G1161 they said G2036 unto him, G846 We can. G1410 And G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 Ye shall G4095 indeed G3303 drink G4095 of the cup G4221 that G3739 I G1473 drink of; G4095 and G2532 with the baptism G908 that G3739 I G1473 am baptized withal G907 shall ye be baptized: G907 But G1161 to sit G2523 on G1537 my G3450 right hand G1188 and G2532 on G1537 my G3450 left hand G2176 is G2076 not G3756 mine G1699 to give; G1325 but G235 it shall be given to them for whom G3739 it is prepared. G2090 And G2532 when the ten G1176 heard G191 it, they began G756 to be much displeased G23 with G4012 James G2385 and G2532 John. G2491 But G1161 Jesus G2424 called G4341 them G846 to him, and saith G3004 unto them, G846 Ye know G1492 that G3754 they which are accounted G1380 to rule G757 over the Gentiles G1484 exercise lordship G2634 over them; G846 and G2532 their G846 great ones G3173 exercise authority G2715 upon them. G846 But G1161 so G3779 shall it G2071 not G3756 be G2071 among G1722 you: G5213 but G235 whosoever G3739 G1437 will G2309 be G1096 great G3173 among G1722 you, G5213 shall be G2071 your G5216 minister: G1249 And G2532 whosoever G3739 G302 of you G5216 will G2309 be G1096 the chiefest, G4413 shall be G2071 servant G1401 of all. G3956 For G1063 even G2532 the Son G5207 of man G444 came G2064 not G3756 to be ministered unto, G1247 but G235 to minister, G1247 and G2532 to give G1325 his G846 life G5590 a ransom G3083 for G473 many. Luke 22:24-27 STRONG

And G1161 there was G1096 also G2532 a strife G5379 among G1722 them, G846 which G5101 of them G846 should be accounted G1380 G1511 the greatest. G3187 And G1161 he said G2036 unto them, G846 The kings G935 of the Gentiles G1484 exercise lordship over G2961 them; G846 and G2532 they that exercise authority upon G1850 them G846 are called G2564 benefactors. G2110 But G1161 ye G5210 shall not G3756 be so: G3779 but G235 he that is greatest G3187 among G1722 you, G5213 let him be G1096 as G5613 the younger; G3501 and G2532 he that is chief, G2233 as G5613 he that doth serve. G1247 For G1063 whether G5101 is greater, G3187 he that sitteth at meat, G345 or G2228 he that serveth? G1247 is not G3780 he that sitteth at meat? G345 but G1161 I G1473 am G1510 among G1722 G3319 you G5216 as G5613 he that serveth. G1247

Titus 1:7-16 STRONG

For G1063 a bishop G1985 must G1163 be G1511 blameless, G410 as G5613 the steward G3623 of God; G2316 not G3361 selfwilled, G829 not G3361 soon angry, G3711 not G3361 given to wine, G3943 no G3361 striker, G4131 not G3361 given to filthy lucre; G146 But G235 a lover of hospitality, G5382 a lover of good men, G5358 sober, G4998 just, G1342 holy, G3741 temperate; G1468 Holding fast G472 the faithful G4103 word G3056 as G2596 he hath been taught, G1322 that G2443 he may be G5600 able G1415 by G1722 sound G5198 doctrine G1319 both G2532 to exhort G3870 and G2532 to convince G1651 the gainsayers. G483 For G1063 there are G1526 many G4183 unruly G506 and G2532 vain talkers G3151 and G2532 deceivers, G5423 specially G3122 they of G1537 the circumcision: G4061 Whose G3739 mouths G1993 must G1163 be stopped, G1993 who G3748 subvert G396 whole G3650 houses, G3624 teaching G1321 things which G3739 they ought G1163 not, G3361 for G5484 filthy G150 lucre's G2771 sake. G5484 One G5100 of G1537 themselves, G846 even a prophet G4396 of their G846 own, G2398 said, G2036 The Cretians G2912 are alway G104 liars, G5583 evil G2556 beasts, G2342 slow G692 bellies. G1064 This G3778 witness G3141 is G2076 true. G227 Wherefore G1223 G3739 G156 rebuke G1651 them G846 sharply, G664 that G2443 they may be sound G5198 in G1722 the faith; G4102 Not G3361 giving heed G4337 to Jewish G2451 fables, G3454 and G2532 commandments G1785 of men, G444 that turn from G654 the truth. G225 Unto the pure G2513 all things G3956 are pure: G3303 G2513 but G1161 unto them that are defiled G3392 and G2532 unbelieving G571 is nothing G3762 pure; G2513 but G235 even G2532 their G846 mind G3563 and G2532 conscience G4893 is defiled. G3392 They profess G3670 that they know G1492 God; G2316 but G1161 in works G2041 they deny G720 him, being G5607 abominable, G947 and G2532 disobedient, G545 and G2532 unto G4314 every G3956 good G18 work G2041 reprobate. Commentary on 3 John 1 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

3Jo 1-14. Address: Wish for Gaius' Prosperity: Joy at His Walking in the Truth. Hospitality to the Brethren and Strangers the Fruit of Love. Diotrephes' Opposition and Ambition. Praise of Demetrius. Conclusion.

1. I—emphatical. I personally, for my part. On Gaius or Caius, see my Introduction before Second Epistle.

love in the truth—(2Jo 1). "Beloved" is repeated often in this Epistle, indicating strong affection (3Jo 1, 2, 5, 11).

2. above all things—Greek, "concerning all things": so Alford: in all respects. But Wahl justifies English Version (compare 1Pe 4:8). Of course, since his soul's prosperity is presupposed, "above all things" does not imply that John wishes Gaius' bodily health above that of his soul, but as the first object to be desired next after spiritual health. I know you are prospering in the concerns of your soul. I wish you similar prosperity in your body. Perhaps John had heard from the brethren (3Jo 3) that Gaius was in bad health, and was tried in other ways (3Jo 10), to which the wish, 3Jo 2, refers.

prosper—in general.

be in health—in particular.

3. testified of the truth that is in thee—Greek, "of" (or 'to') thy truth": thy share of that truth in which thou walkest [Alford].

even as thou—in contrast to Diotrephes (3Jo 9).

4. my children—members of the Church: confirming the view that the "elect lady" is a Church.

5. faithfully—an act becoming a faithful man.

whatsoever thou doest—a distinct Greek word from the former "doest": translate, "workest": whatsoever work, or labor of love, thou dost perform. So Mt 26:10, "She hath wrought a good work upon me."

and to strangers—The oldest manuscripts, "and that (that is, and those brethren) strangers." The fact of the brethren whom thou didst entertain being "strangers," enhances the love manifested in the act.

6. borne witness of thy charity before the church—to stimulate others by the good example. The brethren so entertained by Gaius were missionary evangelists (3Jo 7); and, probably, in the course of narrating their missionary labors for the edification of the Church where John then was, incidentally mentioned the loving hospitality shown them by Gaius.

bring forward on their journey—"If thou (continue to) forward on their journey" by giving them provisions for the way.

after a godly sort—Greek, "in a manner worthy of God," whose ambassadors they are, and whose servant thou art. He who honors God's missionary servants (3Jo 7), honors God.

7. his name's sake—Christ's.

went forth—as missionaries.

taking nothing—refusing to receive aught by way of pay, or maintenance, though justly entitled to it, as Paul at Corinth and at Thessalonica.

Gentiles—the Christians just gathered out by their labors from among the heathen. As Gaius himself was a Gentile convert, "the Gentiles" here must mean the converts just made from the heathen, the Gentiles to whom they had gone forth. It would have been inexpedient to have taken aught (the Greek "meden" implies, not that they got nothing, though they had desired it, but that it was of their own choice they took nothing) from the infant churches among the heathen: the case was different in receiving hospitality from Gaius.

8. We—in contradistinction to "the Gentiles" or "heathen" referred to, 3Jo 7.

therefore—as they take nothing from the Gentiles or heathen.

receive—The oldest manuscripts read, "take up." As they "take" nothing from the Gentiles, we ought to take them up so as to support them.

fellow helpers—with them.

to the truth—that is, to promote the truth.

9. I wrote—The oldest manuscripts add "something": a communication, probably, on the subject of receiving the brethren with brotherly love (3Jo 8, 10). That Epistle was not designed by the Spirit for the universal Church, or else it would have been preserved.

unto the church—of which Gaius is a member.

loveth … pre-eminence—through ambition. Evidently occupying a high place in the Church where Gaius was (3Jo 10).

among them—over the members of the Church.

receiveth us not—virtually, namely, by not receiving with love the brethren whom we recommended to be received (3Jo 8, 10; compare Mt 10:40).

10. if I come—(3Jo 14).

I will remember—literally, "I will bring to mind" before all by stigmatizing and punishing.

prating—with mere silly tattle.

neither doth he … receive the brethren—with hospitality. "The brethren" are the missionaries on their journey.

forbiddeth them that would—receive them.

casteth them—those that would receive the brethren, by excommunication from the Church, which his influence, as a leading man (3Jo 9) in it, enabled him to do. Neander thinks that the missionaries were Jews by birth, whence it is said in their praise they took nothing from THE Gentiles: in contrast to other Jewish missionaries who abused ministers' right of maintenance elsewhere, as Paul tells us, 2Co 11:22; Php 3:2, 5, 19. Now in the Gentile churches there existed an ultra-Pauline party of anti-Jewish tendency, the forerunners of Marcion: Diotrephes possibly stood at the head of this party, which fact, as well as this domineering spirit, may account for his hostility to the missionaries, and to the apostle John, who had, by the power of love, tried to harmonize the various elements in the Asiatic churches. At a later period, Marcion, we know, attached himself to Paul alone, and paid no deference to the authority of John.

11. follow not that which is evil—as manifested in Diotrephes (3Jo 9, 10).

but … good—as manifested in Demetrius (3Jo 12).

is of God—is born of God, who is good.

hath not seen God—spiritually, not literally.

12. of all men—who have had opportunity of knowing his character.

of the truth itself—The Gospel standard of truth bears witness to him that he walks conformably to it, in acts of real love, hospitality to the brethren (in contrast to Diotrephes), &c. Compare Joh 3:21 "He that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest that they are wrought in God."

we also—besides the testimony of "all men," and "of the truth itself."

ye know—The oldest manuscripts read, "thou knowest."

13. I will not—rather as Greek, "I wish not … to write" more.

14. face to face—Greek, "mouth to mouth."

Peace—peace inward of conscience, peace fraternal of friendship, peace supernal of glory [Lyra].

friends—a title seldom used in the New Testament, as it is absorbed in the higher titles of "brother, brethren." Still Christ recognizes the relation of friend also, based on the highest grounds, obedience to Him from love, and entailing the highest privileges, admission to the intimacy of the holy and glorious God, and sympathizing Saviour; so Christians have "friends" in Christ. Here in a friendly letter, mention of "friends" appropriately occurs.

by name—not less than if their names were written [Bengel].
