1 The former G3303 G4413 treatise G3056 have I made, G4160 O G5599 Theophilus, G2321 of G4012 all G3956 that G3739 Jesus G2424 began G756 both G5037 to do G4160 and G2532 teach, G1321
It seemed G1380 good to me also, G2504 having had perfect G199 understanding G3877 of all things G3956 from the very first, G509 to write G1125 unto thee G4671 in order, G2517 most excellent G2903 Theophilus, G2321
The blind G5185 receive their sight, G308 and G2532 the lame G5560 walk, G4043 the lepers G3015 are cleansed, G2511 and G2532 the deaf G2974 hear, G191 the dead G3498 are raised up, G1453 and G2532 the poor G4434 have the gospel preached to them. G2097
And G2532 Jesus G2424 went about G4013 all G3650 Galilee, G1056 teaching G1321 in G1722 their G846 synagogues, G4864 and G2532 preaching G2784 the gospel G2098 of the kingdom, G932 and G2532 healing G2323 all G3956 manner of sickness G3554 and G2532 all G3956 manner of disease G3119 among G1722 the people. G2992 And G2532 his G846 fame G189 went G565 throughout G1519 all G3650 Syria: G4947 and G2532 they brought G4374 unto him G846 all G3956 sick G2560 people G2192 that were taken with G4912 divers G4164 diseases G3554 and G2532 torments, G931 and G2532 those which were possessed with devils, G1139 and G2532 those which were lunatick, G4583 and G2532 those that had the palsy; G3885 and G2532 he healed G2323 them. G846
And G1161 in G1722 that same G846 hour G5610 he cured G2323 many G4183 of G575 their infirmities G3554 and G2532 plagues, G3148 and G2532 of evil G4190 spirits; G4151 and G2532 unto many G4183 that were blind G5185 he gave G5483 sight. G991 Then G2532 Jesus G2424 answering G611 said G2036 unto them, G846 Go your way, G4198 and tell G518 John G2491 what things G3739 ye have seen G1492 and G2532 heard; G191 how G3754 that the blind G5185 see, G308 the lame G5560 walk, G4043 the lepers G3015 are cleansed, G2511 the deaf G2974 hear, G191 the dead G3498 are raised, G1453 to the poor G4434 the gospel is preached. G2097 And G2532 blessed G3107 is G2076 he, whosoever G3739 shall G4624 not G3362 be offended G4624 in G1722 me. G1698
And G2532 he said G2036 unto them, G846 What things? G4169 And G1161 they said G2036 unto him, G846 Concerning G4012 Jesus G2424 of Nazareth, G3480 which G3739 was G1096 a prophet G4396 mighty G1415 in G1722 G435 deed G2041 and G2532 word G3056 before G1726 God G2316 and G2532 all G3956 the people: G2992
Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 Many G4183 good G2570 works G2041 have I shewed G1166 you G5213 from G1537 my G3450 Father; G3962 for G1223 which G4169 of those G846 works G2041 do ye stone G3034 me? G3165 The Jews G2453 answered G611 him, G846 saying, G3004 For G4012 a good G2570 work G2041 we stone G3034 thee G4571 not; G3756 but G235 for G4012 blasphemy; G988 and G2532 because G3754 that thou, G4771 being G5607 a man, G444 makest G4160 thyself G4572 God. G2316 Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 Is it G2076 not G3756 written G1125 in G1722 your G5216 law, G3551 I G1473 said, G2036 Ye are G2075 gods? G2316 If G1487 he called G2036 them G1565 gods, G2316 unto G4314 whom G3739 the word G3056 of God G2316 came, G1096 and G2532 the scripture G1124 cannot G3756 G1410 be broken; G3089 Say G3004 ye G5210 of him, whom G3739 the Father G3962 hath sanctified, G37 and G2532 sent G649 into G1519 the world, G2889 G3754 Thou blasphemest; G987 because G3754 I said, G2036 I am G1510 the Son G5207 of God? G2316 If G1487 I do G4160 not G3756 the works G2041 of my G3450 Father, G3962 believe G4100 me G3427 not. G3361 But G1161 if G1487 I do, G4160 though G2579 ye believe G4100 not G3361 me, G1698 believe G4100 the works: G2041 that G2443 ye may know, G1097 and G2532 believe, G4100 that G3754 the Father G3962 is in G1722 me, G1698 and I G2504 in G1722 him. G846
The high priest G749 then G3767 asked G2065 Jesus G2424 of G4012 his G846 disciples, G3101 and G2532 of G4012 his G846 doctrine. G1322 Jesus G2424 answered G611 him, G846 I G1473 spake G2980 openly G3954 to the world; G2889 I G1473 ever G3842 taught G1321 in G1722 the synagogue, G4864 and G2532 in G1722 the temple, G2411 whither G3699 the Jews G2453 always G3842 resort; G4905 and G2532 in G1722 secret G2927 have I said G2980 nothing. G3762 Why G5101 askest thou G1905 me? G3165 ask G1905 them which heard me, G191 what G5101 I have said G2980 unto them: G846 behold, G2396 they G3778 know G1492 what G3739 I G1473 said. G2036
Ye men G435 of Israel, G2475 hear G191 these G5128 words; G3056 Jesus G2424 of Nazareth, G3480 a man G435 approved G584 of G575 God G2316 among G1519 you G5209 by miracles G1411 and G2532 wonders G5059 and G2532 signs, G4592 which G3739 God G2316 did G4160 by G1223 him G846 in G1722 the midst G3319 of you, G5216 as G2531 ye yourselves G846 also G2532 know: G1492
For G1063 even G1519 hereunto G5124 were ye called: G2564 because G3754 Christ G5547 also G2532 suffered G3958 for G5228 us, G2257 leaving G5277 us G2254 an example, G5261 that G2443 ye should follow G1872 his G846 steps: G2487 Who G3739 did G4160 no G3756 sin, G266 neither G3761 was guile G1388 found G2147 in G1722 his G846 mouth: G4750 Who, G3739 when he was reviled, G3058 reviled G486 not G3756 again; G486 when he suffered, G3958 he threatened G546 not; G3756 but G1161 committed G3860 himself to him that judgeth G2919 righteously: G1346

Commentary on Acts 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Acts of the Apostles
Chapter 1
The inspired historian begins his narrative of the Acts of the Apostles,
Act 1:1-5
In these verses,
Act 1:6-11
In Jerusalem Christ, by his angel, had appointed his disciples to meet him in Galilee; there he appointed them to meet him in Jerusalem again, such a day. Thus he would try their obedience, and it was found ready and cheerful; they came together, as he appointed them, to be the witnesses of his ascension, of which we have here an account. Observe,
Act 1:12-14
We are here told,
Act 1:15-26
The sin of Judas was not only his shame and ruin, but it made a vacancy in the college of the apostles. They were ordained twelve, with an eye to the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from the twelve patriarchs; they were the twelve stars that make up the church's crown (Rev. 12:1), and for them twelve thrones were designated, Mt. 19:28. Now being twelve when they were learners, if they were but eleven when they were to be teachers, it would occasion every one to enquire what had become of the twelfth, and so revive the remembrance of the scandal of their society; and therefore care was taken, before the descent of the Spirit, to fill up the vacancy, of the doing of which we now have an account, our Lord Jesus, probably, having given directions about it, among other things which he spoke pertaining to the kingdom of God. Observe,
