3 Saying, G3004 G3754 Thou wentest in G1525 to G4314 men G435 uncircumcised, G203 G2192 and G2532 didst eat G4906 with them. G846
And G5037 he said G5346 unto G4314 them, G846 Ye G5210 know G1987 how G5613 that it is G2076 an unlawful thing G111 for a man G435 that is a Jew G2453 to keep company, G2853 or G2228 come unto G4334 one of another nation; G246 but G2532 God G2316 hath shewed G1166 me G1698 that I should not G3367 call G3004 any G3367 man G444 common G2839 or G2228 unclean. G169
And G2532 the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 scribes G1122 murmured, G1234 saying, G3004 This man G3754 G3778 receiveth G4327 sinners, G268 and G2532 eateth G4906 with them. G846
For G1063 before G4253 that certain G5100 came G2064 from G575 James, G2385 he did eat G4906 with G3326 the Gentiles: G1484 but G1161 when G3753 they were come, G2064 he withdrew G5288 and G2532 separated G873 himself, G1438 fearing G5399 them which were of G1537 the circumcision. G4061
Then G3767 called he G1528 them G846 in, G1528 and lodged G3579 them. And G1161 on the morrow G1887 Peter G4074 went away G1831 with G4862 them, G846 and G2532 certain G5100 brethren G80 from G575 Joppa G2445 accompanied G4905 him. G846
And G5037 he commanded G4367 them G846 to be baptized G907 in G1722 the name G3686 of the Lord. G2962 Then G5119 prayed they G2065 him G846 to tarry G1961 certain G5100 days. G2250
But G1161 now G3570 I have written G1125 unto you G5213 not G3361 to keep company, G4874 if G1437 any man G5100 that is called G3687 a brother G80 be G2228 a fornicator, G4205 or G2228 covetous, G4123 or G2228 an idolater, G1496 or G2228 a railer, G3060 or G2228 a drunkard, G3183 or G2228 an extortioner; G727 with such an one G5108 no not G3366 to eat. Commentary on Acts 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
In this chapter we have,
Act 11:1-18
The preaching of the gospel to Cornelius was a thing which we poor sinners of the Gentiles have reason to reflect upon with a great deal of joy and thankfulness; for it was the bringing of light to us who sat in darkness. Now it being so great a surprize to the believing as well as the unbelieving Jews, it is worth while to enquire how it was received, and what comments were made upon it. And here we find,
Act 11:19-26
We have here an account of the planting and watering of a church at Antioch, the chief city of Syria, reckoned afterwards the third most considerable city of the empire, only Rome and Alexandria being preferred before it, next to whose patriarch that of Antioch took place. It stood where Hamath or Riblah did, which we read of in the Old Testament. It is suggested that Luke, the penman of this history, as well as Theophilus, to whom he dedicates it, was of Antioch, which may be the reason why he takes more particular notice of the success of the gospel at Antioch, as also because there it was that Paul began to be famous, towards the story of whom he is hastening. Now concerning the church at Antioch observe,
Act 11:27-30
When our Lord Jesus ascended on high he gave gifts unto men, not only apostles and evangelists, but prophets, who were enabled by the Spirit to foresee and foretel things to come, which not only served for a confirmation of the truth of Christianity (for all that these prophets foretold came to pass, which proved that they were sent of God, Deu. 18:22; Jer. 28:9), but was also of great use to the church, and served very much for its guidance. Now here we have,
