11 And G2532 now, G3568 behold, G2400 the hand G5495 of the Lord G2962 is upon G1909 thee, G4571 and G2532 thou shalt be G2071 blind, G5185 not G3361 seeing G991 the sun G2246 for G891 a season. G2540 And G1161 immediately G3916 there fell G1968 on G1909 him G846 a mist G887 and G2532 a darkness; G4655 and G2532 he went about G4013 seeking G2212 some to lead him by the hand. G5497
For day H3119 and night H3915 thy hand H3027 was heavy H3513 upon me: my moisture H3955 is turned H2015 into the drought H2725 of summer. H7019 Selah. H5542
So they sent H7971 and gathered together H622 all the lords H5633 of the Philistines, H6430 and said, H559 Send away H7971 the ark H727 of the God H430 of Israel, H3478 and let it go again H7725 to his own place, H4725 that it slay H4191 us not, and our people: H5971 for there was a deadly H4194 destruction H4103 throughout all the city; H5892 the hand H3027 of God H430 was very H3966 heavy H3513 there.
And G1161 Ananias G367 went his way, G565 and G2532 entered G1525 into G1519 the house; G3614 and G2532 putting G2007 his hands G5495 on G1909 him G846 said, G2036 Brother G80 Saul, G4549 the Lord, G2962 even Jesus, G2424 that appeared G3700 unto thee G4671 in G1722 the way G3598 as G3739 thou camest, G2064 hath sent G649 me, G3165 that G3704 thou mightest receive thy sight, G308 and G2532 be filled with G4130 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
It is a fearful thing G5398 to fall G1706 into G1519 the hands G5495 of the living G2198 God. G2316
For G1063 I would G2309 not, G3756 brethren, G80 that ye G5209 should be ignorant G50 of this G5124 mystery, G3466 lest G3363 ye should be G5600 wise G5429 in G3844 your own conceits; G1438 that G3754 blindness G4457 in G575 part G3313 is happened G1096 to Israel, G2474 until G891 G3739 the fulness G4138 of the Gentiles G1484 be come in. G1525
What G5101 then? G3767 Israel G2474 hath G2013 not G3756 obtained G2013 that G5127 which G3739 he seeketh for; G1934 but G1161 the election G1589 hath obtained it, G2013 and G1161 the rest G3062 were blinded G4456 (According as G2531 it is written, G1125 God G2316 hath given G1325 them G846 the spirit G4151 of slumber, G2659 eyes G3788 that they should G991 not G3361 see, G991 and G2532 ears G3775 that they should G191 not G3361 hear;) G191 unto G2193 this G4594 day. G2250 And G2532 David G1138 saith, G3004 Let G1096 their G846 table G5132 be made G1096 a snare, G1519 G3803 and G2532 a trap, G1519 G2339 and G2532 a stumblingblock, G1519 G4625 and G2532 a recompence G1519 G468 unto them: G846 Let G4654 their G846 eyes G3788 be darkened, G4654 that they may G991 not G3361 see, G991 and G2532 bow down G4781 their G846 back G3577 alway. G1275
And they smote H5221 the men H582 that were at the door H6607 of the house H1004 with blindness, H5575 both small H6996 and great: H1419 so that they wearied H3811 themselves to find H4672 the door. H6607
And G1161 Saul G4569 arose G1453 from G575 the earth; G1093 and G1161 when his G846 eyes G3788 were opened, G455 he saw G991 no man: G3762 but G1161 they led G5496 him G846 by the hand, G5496 and brought G1521 him into G1519 Damascus. G1154 And G2532 he was G2258 three G5140 days G2250 without G3361 sight, G991 and G2532 neither G3756 did eat G5315 nor G3761 drink. G4095
For the LORD H3068 hath poured out H5258 upon you the spirit H7307 of deep sleep, H8639 and hath closed H6105 your eyes: H5869 the prophets H5030 and your rulers, H7218 the seers H2374 hath he covered. H3680
Remove H5493 thy stroke H5061 away H5493 from me: I am consumed H3615 by the blow H8409 of thine hand. H3027 When thou with rebukes H8433 dost correct H3256 man H376 for iniquity, H5771 thou makest his beauty H2530 to consume away H4529 like a moth: H6211 surely every man H120 is vanity. H1892 Selah. H5542
Then the king H4428 of Syria H758 warred H3898 against Israel, H3478 and took counsel H3289 with his servants, H5650 saying, H559 In such H6423 and such H492 a place H4725 shall be my camp. H8466
And it was so, that, after H310 they had carried it about, H5437 the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 was against the city H5892 with a very H3966 great H1419 destruction: H4103 and he smote H5221 the men H582 of the city, H5892 both small H6996 and great, H1419 and they had emerods H2914 H6076 in their secret parts. H8368
But the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 was heavy H3513 upon them of Ashdod, H796 and he destroyed H8074 them, and smote H5221 them with emerods, H2914 H6076 even Ashdod H795 and the coasts H1366 thereof. And when the men H582 of Ashdod H795 saw H7200 that it was so, they said, H559 The ark H727 of the God H430 of Israel H3478 shall not abide H3427 with us: for his hand H3027 is sore H7185 upon us, and upon Dagon H1712 our god. Commentary on Acts 13 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 13
We have not yet met with any things concerning the spreading of the gospel to the Gentiles which bears any proportion to the largeness of that commission, "Go, and disciple all nations.' The door was opened in the baptizing of Cornelius and his friends; but since then we had the gospel preached to the Jews only, ch. 11:19. It should seem as if the light which began to shine upon the Gentile world had withdrawn itself. But here in this chapter that work, that great good work, is revived in the midst of the years; and though the Jews shall still have the first offer of the gospel made to them, yet, upon their refusal, the Gentiles shall have their share of the offer of it. Here is,
Act 13:1-3
We have here a divine warrant and commission to Barnabas and Saul to go and preach the gospel among the Gentiles, and their ordination to that service by the imposition of hands, with fasting and prayer.
Act 13:4-13
In these verses we have,
Act 13:14-41
Perga in Pamphylia was a noted place, especially for a temple there erected to the goddess Diana, yet nothing at all is related of what Paul and Barnabas did there, only that thither they came (v. 13), and thence they departed, v. 14. But the history of the apostles' travels, as that of Christ's, passes by many things worthy to have been recorded, because, if all had been written, the world could not have contained the books. But the next place we find them in is another Antioch, said to be in Pisidia, to distinguish it from that Antioch in Syria from which they were sent out. Pisidia was a province of the Lesser Asia, bordering upon Pamphylia; this Antioch, it is likely, was the metropolis of it. Abundance of Jews lived there, and to them the gospel was to be first preached; and Paul's sermon to them is what we have in these verses, which, it is likely, is the substance of what was preached by the apostles generally to the Jews in all places; for in dealing with them the proper way was to show them how the New Testament, which they would have them to receive, exactly agreed with the Old Testament, which they not only received, but were zealous for. We have here,
Act 13:42-52
The design of this story being to vindicate the apostles, especially Paul (as he doth himself at large, Rom. 11), from the reflections of the Jews upon him for preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, it is here observed that he proceeded therein with all the caution imaginable, and upon due consideration, of which we have here an instance.
