4 And G2532 some G5100 of G1537 them G846 believed, G3982 and G2532 consorted G4345 with Paul G3972 and G2532 Silas; G4609 and G5037 of the devout G4576 Greeks G1672 a great G4183 multitude, G4128 and G5037 of the chief G4413 women G1135 not G3756 a few. G3641
Therefore G3767 G3303 many G4183 of G1537 them G846 believed; G4100 also G2532 of honourable G2158 women G1135 which G3588 were Greeks, G1674 and G2532 of men, G435 not G3756 a few. G3641
Then G5119 pleased it G1380 the apostles G652 and G2532 elders, G4245 with G4862 the whole G3650 church, G1577 to send G3992 chosen G1586 men G435 of G1537 their own company G846 to G1519 Antioch G490 with G4862 Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas; G921 namely, Judas G2455 surnamed G1941 Barsabas, G923 and G2532 Silas, G4609 chief G2233 men G435 among G1722 the brethren: G80
But G1161 the Jews G2453 stirred up G3951 the devout G4576 and G2532 honourable G2158 women, G1135 and G2532 the chief men G4413 of the city, G4172 and G2532 raised G1892 persecution G1375 against G1909 Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas, G921 and G2532 expelled G1544 them G846 out of G575 their G846 coasts. G3725
Now G1161 when the congregation G4864 was broken up, G3089 many G4183 of the Jews G2453 and G2532 religious G4576 proselytes G4339 followed G190 Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas: G921 who, G3748 speaking G4354 to them, G846 persuaded G3982 them G846 to continue G1961 in the grace G5485 of God. G2316
And G2532 this they did, not G3756 as G2531 we hoped, G1679 but G235 first G4412 gave G1325 their own selves G1438 to the Lord, G2962 and G2532 unto us G2254 by G1223 the will G2307 of God. G2316
Wherefore G1352 come out G1831 from G1537 among G3319 them, G846 and G2532 be ye separate, G873 saith G3004 the Lord, G2962 and G2532 touch G680 not G3361 the unclean G169 thing; and G2504 I will receive G1523 you, G5209 And G2532 will be G2071 G1519 a Father G3962 unto you, G5213 and G2532 ye G5210 shall be G2071 my G3427 sons G5207 G1519 and G2532 daughters, G2364 saith G3004 the Lord G2962 Almighty. G3841
Crying out, G2896 Men G435 of Israel, G2475 help: G997 This G3778 is G2076 the man, G444 that teacheth G1321 all G3956 men every where G3837 against G2596 the people, G2992 and G2532 the law, G3551 and G2532 this G5126 place: G5117 and G5037 further G2089 brought G1521 Greeks G1672 also G2532 into G1519 the temple, G2411 and G2532 hath polluted G2840 this G5127 holy G40 place. G5117
Howbeit G1161 certain G5100 men G435 clave G2853 unto him, G846 and believed: G4100 among G1722 the which G3739 G2532 was Dionysius G1354 the Areopagite, G698 and G2532 a woman G1135 named G3686 Damaris, G1152 and G2532 others G2087 with G4862 them. G846
Therefore G3767 G3303 disputed he G1256 in G1722 the synagogue G4864 with the Jews, G2453 and G2532 with the devout persons, G4576 and G2532 in G1722 the market G58 daily G2596 G3956 G2250 with G4314 them that met with him. G3909
Him G5126 would G2309 Paul G3972 have to go forth G1831 with G4862 him; G846 and G2532 took G2983 and circumcised G4059 him G846 because G1223 of the Jews G2453 which G3588 were G5607 in G1722 those G1565 quarters: G5117 for G1063 they knew G1492 all G537 that G3754 his G846 father G3962 was G5225 a Greek. G1672
Forsake H5800 the foolish, H6612 and live; H2421 and go H833 in the way H1870 of understanding. H998
And G1161 it came to pass G1096 in G1722 Iconium, G2430 that they G846 went G1525 both G2596 together G846 into G1519 the synagogue G4864 of the Jews, G2453 and G2532 so G3779 spake, G2980 that G5620 a great G4183 multitude G4128 both G5037 of the Jews G2453 and also G2532 of the Greeks G1672 believed. G4100
And G1161 by G1223 the hands G5495 of the apostles G652 were G1096 many G4183 signs G4592 and G2532 wonders G5059 wrought G1096 G1096 among G1722 the people; G2992 (and G2532 they were G2258 all G537 with one accord G3661 in G1722 Solomon's G4672 porch. G4745 And G1161 of the rest G3062 durst G5111 no man G3762 join himself G2853 to them: G846 but G235 the people G2992 magnified G3170 them. G846 And G1161 believers G4100 were G4369 the more G3123 added G4369 to the Lord, G2962 multitudes G4128 both G5037 of men G435 and G2532 women.) G1135
And G1161 all G3956 that believed G4100 were G2258 together, G1909 G846 and G2532 had G2192 all things G537 common; G2839
Then G3303 G3767 they that gladly G780 received G588 his G846 word G3056 were baptized: G907 and G2532 the same G1565 day G2250 there were added G4369 unto them about G5616 three thousand G5153 souls. G5590 And G1161 they continued G2258 stedfastly G4342 in the apostles' G652 doctrine G1322 and G2532 fellowship, G2842 and G2532 in breaking G2800 of bread, G740 and G2532 in prayers. G4335
Then G3767 said G2036 the Jews G2453 among G4314 themselves, G1438 Whither G4226 will G3195 he G3778 go, G4198 that G3754 we G2249 shall G2147 not G3756 find G2147 him? G846 will G3361 G3195 he go G4198 unto G1519 the dispersed G1290 among the Gentiles, G1672 and G2532 teach G1321 the Gentiles? G1672
Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come H935 people, H5971 and the inhabitants H3427 of many H7227 cities: H5892 And the inhabitants H3427 of one H259 city shall go H1980 to another, H259 saying, H559 Let us go H3212 speedily H1980 to pray H2470 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 and to seek H1245 the LORD H3068 of hosts: H6635 I will go H3212 also. Yea, many H7227 people H5971 and strong H6099 nations H1471 shall come H935 to seek H1245 the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 in Jerusalem, H3389 and to pray H2470 before H6440 the LORD. H3068 Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 In those days H3117 it shall come to pass, that ten H6235 men H582 shall take hold H2388 out of all languages H3956 of the nations, H1471 even shall take hold H2388 of the skirt H3671 of him that is a Jew, H376 H3064 saying, H559 We will go H3212 with you: for we have heard H8085 that God H430 is with you.
Tell H5046 me, O thou whom my soul H5315 loveth, H157 where thou feedest, H7462 where H349 thou makest thy flock to rest H7257 at noon: H6672 for H4100 why should I be as one that turneth aside H5844 by the flocks H5739 of thy companions? H2270 If thou know H3045 not, O thou fairest H3303 among women, H802 go thy way forth H3318 by the footsteps H6119 of the flock, H6629 and feed H7462 thy kids H1429 beside the shepherds' H7462 tents. Commentary on Acts 17 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 17
We have here a further account of the travels of Paul, and his services and sufferings for Christ. He was not like a candle upon a table, that gives light only to one room, but like the sun that goes its circuit to give light to many. He was called into Macedonia, a large kingdom, ch. 16:9. He began with Philippi, because it was the first city he came to; but he must not confine himself to this. We have him here,
Act 17:1-9
Paul's two epistles to the Thessalonians, the first two he wrote by inspiration, give such a shining character of that church, that we cannot but be glad here in the history to meet with an account of the first founding of the church there.
Act 17:10-15
In these verses we have,
Act 17:16-21
A scholar that has acquaintance, and is in love, with the learning of the ancients, would think he should be very happy if he were where Paul now was, at Athens, in the midst of the various sects of philosophers, and would have a great many curious questions to ask them, for the explication of the remains we have of the Athenian learning; but Paul, though bred a scholar, and an ingenious active man, does not make this any of his business at Athens. He has other work to mind: it is not the improving of himself in their philosophy that he aims at, he has learned to call it a vain thing, and is above it (Col. 2:8); his business is, in God's name, to correct their disorders in religion, and to turn them from the service of idols, and of Satan in them, to the service of the true and living God in Christ.
Act 17:22-31
We have here St. Paul's sermon at Athens. Divers sermons we have had, which the apostles preached to the Jews, or such Gentiles as had an acquaintance with and veneration for the Old Testament, and were worshippers of the true and living God; and all they had to do with them was to open and allege that Jesus is the Christ; but here we have a sermon to heathens, that worshipped false gods, and were without the true God in the world, and to them the scope of their discourse was quite different from what it was to the other. In the former case their business was to lead their hearers by prophecies and miracles to the knowledge of the Redeemer, and faith in him; in the latter it was to lead them by the common works of providence to the knowledge of the Creator, and the worship of him. One discourse of this kind we had before to the rude idolaters of Lystra that deified the apostles (ch. 14:15); this recorded here is to the more polite and refined idolaters at Athens, and an admirable discourse it is, and every way suited to his auditory and the design he had upon them.
Act 17:32-34
We have here a short account of the issue of Paul's preaching at Athens.
