13 Then G1161 certain G5100 of G575 the vagabond G4022 Jews, G2453 exorcists, G1845 took upon them G2021 to call G3687 over G1909 them which had G2192 evil G4190 spirits G4151 the name G3686 of the Lord G2962 Jesus, G2424 saying, G3004 We adjure G3726 you G5209 by Jesus G2424 whom G3739 Paul G3972 preacheth. G2784
And G2532 if G1487 I G1473 by G1722 Beelzebub G954 cast out G1544 devils, G1140 by G1722 whom G5101 do your G5216 children G5207 cast them out? G1544 therefore G5124 G1223 they G846 shall be G2071 your G5216 judges. G2923
And G1161 John G2491 answered G611 him, G846 saying, G3004 Master, G1320 we saw G1492 one G5100 casting out G1544 devils G1140 in thy G4675 name, G3686 and G3739 he followeth G190 not G3756 us: G2254 and G2532 we forbad G2967 him, G846 because G3754 he followeth G190 not G3756 us. G2254
But G1161 Jesus G2424 held his peace. G4623 And G2532 the high priest G749 answered G611 and said G2036 unto him, G846 I adjure G1844 thee G4571 by G2596 the living G2198 God, G2316 that G2443 thou tell G2036 us G2254 whether G1487 thou G4771 be G1488 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of God. G2316
Behold, thou hast driven me out H1644 this day H3117 from the face H6440 of the earth; H127 and from H5921 thy face H6440 shall I be hid; H5641 and I shall be a fugitive H5128 and a vagabond H5110 in the earth; H776 and it shall come to pass, H1961 that every one that findeth me H4672 shall slay me. H2026
And Joshua H3091 adjured H7650 them at that time, H6256 saying, H559 Cursed H779 be the man H376 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 that riseth up H6965 and buildeth H1129 this city H5892 Jericho: H3405 he shall lay the foundation H3245 thereof in his firstborn, H1060 and in his youngest H6810 son shall he set up H5324 the gates H1817 of it.
And the men H376 of Israel H3478 were distressed H5065 that day: H3117 for Saul H7586 had adjured H422 the people, H5971 saying, H559 Cursed H779 be the man H376 that eateth H398 any food H3899 until evening, H6153 that I may be avenged H5358 on mine enemies. H341 So none of the people H5971 tasted H2938 any food. H3899
And the king H4428 said H559 unto him, How many times H6471 shall I adjure H7650 thee that thou tell H1696 me nothing but that which is true H571 in the name H8034 of the LORD? H3068
And G1161 John G2491 answered G611 and said, G2036 Master, G1988 we saw G1492 one G5100 casting out G1544 devils G1140 in G1909 thy G4675 name; G3686 and G2532 we forbad G2967 him, G846 because G3754 he followeth G190 not G3756 with G3326 us. G2257
And G1161 when Simon G4613 saw G2300 that G3754 through G1223 laying on G1936 of the apostles' G652 hands G5495 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 was given, G1325 he offered G4374 them G846 money, G5536 Saying, G3004 Give G1325 me also G2504 this G5026 power, G1849 that G2443 on G2007 whomsoever G3739 G1437 I lay G2007 hands, G5495 he may receive G2983 the Holy G40 Ghost. Commentary on Acts 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
We left Paul in his circuit visiting the churches (ch. 18:23), but we have not forgotten, nor has he, the promise he made to his friends at Ephesus, to return to them, and make some stay there; now this chapter shows us his performance of that promise, his coming to Ephesus, and his continuance there two years; we are here told,
Act 19:1-7
Ephesus was a city of great note in Asia, famous for a temple built there to Diana, which was one of the wonders of the world: thither Paul came to preach the gospel while Apollos was at Corinth (v. 1); while he was watering there, Paul was planting here, and grudged not that Apollos entered into his labours and was building upon his foundation, but rejoiced in it, and went on in the new work that was cut out for him at Ephesus with the more cheerfulness and satisfaction, because he knew that such an able minister of the New Testament as Apollos was now at Corinth, carrying on the good work there. Though there were those that made him the head of a party against Paul (1 Co. 1:12), yet Paul had no jealousy of him, nor any way disliked the affection the people had for him. Paul having gone through the country of Galatia and Phrygia, having passed through the upper coasts, Pontus and Bithynia, that lay north, at length came to Ephesus, where he had left Aquila and Priscilla, and there found them. At his first coming, he met with some disciples there, who professed faith in Christ as the true Messiah, but were as yet in the first and lowest form in the school of Christ, under his usher John the Baptist. They were in number about twelve (v. 7); they were much of the standing that Apollos was of when he came to Ephesus (for he knew only the baptism of John, ch. 18:25), but they had not opportunity of being acquainted with Aquila and Priscilla, or had not been so long in Ephesus or were not so willing to receive instruction as Apollos was, otherwise they might have had the way of God expounded to them more perfectly, as Apollos had. Observe here,
Act 19:8-12
Paul is here very busy at Ephesus to do good.
Act 19:13-20
The preachers of the gospel were sent forth to carry on a war against Satan, and therein Christ went forth conquering and to conquer. The casting of evil spirits out of those that were possessed was one instance of Christ's victory over Satan; but, to show in how many ways Christ triumphed over that great enemy, we have here in these verses two remarkable instances of the conquest of Satan, not only in those that were violently possessed by him, but in those that were voluntarily devoted to him.
