16 G1161 There went G4905 with G4862 us G2254 also G2532 certain of the disciples G3101 of G575 Caesarea, G2542 and brought G71 with them G3844 one G5100 Mnason G3416 of Cyprus, G2953 an old G744 disciple, G3101 with whom G3739 we should lodge. G3579
O God, H430 thou hast taught H3925 me from my youth: H5271 and hitherto have I declared H5046 thy wondrous works. H6381 Now also when H5704 I am old H2209 and grayheaded, H7872 O God, H430 forsake H5800 me not; until I have shewed H5046 thy strength H2220 unto this generation, H1755 and thy power H1369 to every one that is to come. H935
They shall still bring forth fruit H5107 in old age; H7872 they shall be fat H1879 and flourishing; H7488
But G1161 Philip G5376 was found G2147 at G1519 Azotus: G108 and G2532 passing G1330 through he preached G2097 in all G3956 the cities, G4172 till G2193 he G846 came G2064 to G1519 Caesarea. G2542
Now G3767 G3303 they which were scattered abroad G1289 upon G575 the persecution G2347 that arose G1096 about G1909 Stephen G4736 travelled G1330 as far as G2193 Phenice, G5403 and G2532 Cyprus, G2954 and G2532 Antioch, G490 preaching G2980 the word G3056 to none G3367 but G1508 unto the Jews G2453 only. G3440
And G3767 the contention G3948 was G1096 so sharp G3948 between them, G846 that G5620 they departed asunder G673 one from the other: G575 G240 and so G5037 Barnabas G921 took G3880 Mark, G3138 and sailed G1602 unto G1519 Cyprus; G2954
Now G1161 when we had discovered G398 Cyprus, G2954 G2532 we left G2641 it G846 on the left hand, G2176 and sailed G4126 into G1519 Syria, G4947 and G2532 landed G2609 at G1519 Tyre: G5184 for G1063 there G1566 the ship G4143 was G2258 to unlade G670 her burden. G1117 And G2532 finding G429 disciples, G3101 we tarried G1961 there G847 seven G2033 days: G2250 who G3748 said G3004 to Paul G3972 through G1223 the Spirit, G4151 that he should G305 not G3361 go up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem. G2419
And G1161 the next G1887 day we that were of G4012 Paul's G3972 company G4012 departed, G1831 and came G2064 G2064 unto G1519 Caesarea: G2542 and G2532 we entered G1525 into G1519 the house G3624 of Philip G5376 the evangelist, G2099 which was G5607 one of G1537 the seven; G2033 and abode G3306 with G3844 him. G846
I write G1125 unto you, G5213 fathers, G3962 because G3754 ye have known G1097 him that is from G575 the beginning. G746 I write G1125 unto you, G5213 young men, G3495 because G3754 ye have overcome G3528 the wicked one. G4190 I write G1125 unto you, G5213 little children, G3813 because G3754 ye have known G1097 the Father. G3962 I have written G1125 unto you, G5213 fathers, G3962 because G3754 ye have known G1097 him that is from G575 the beginning. G746 I have written G1125 unto you, G5213 young men, G3495 because G3754 ye are G2075 strong, G2478 and G2532 the word G3056 of God G2316 abideth G3306 in G1722 you, G5213 and G2532 ye have overcome G3528 the wicked one. Commentary on Acts 21 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 21
We have, with a great deal of pleasure, attended the apostle in his travels throughout the Gentile nations to preach the gospel, and have seen a great harvest of souls gathered in to Christ; there we have seen likewise what persecutions he endured; yet still out of them all the Lord presently delivered him, 2 Tim. 3:11. But now we are to attend him to Jerusalem, and there into lasting bonds; the days of his service now seem to be over, and nothing to remain but days of suffering, days of darkness, for they are many. It is a thousand pities that such a workman should be laid aside; yet so it is, and we must not only acquiesce, as his friends then did, saying, "The will of the Lord be done;' but we must believe, and shall find reason to do so, that Paul in the prison, and at the bar, is as truly glorifying God, and serving Christ's interest, as Paul in the pulpit was. In this chapter we have,
Act 21:1-7
We may observe here,
Act 21:8-14
We have here Paul and his company arrived at length at Caesarea, where he designed to make some stay, it being the place where the gospel was first preached to the Gentiles, and the Holy Ghost fell upon them, ch. 10:1, 44. Now here we are told,
Act 21:15-26
In these verses we have,
Act 21:27-40
We have here Paul brought into a captivity which we are not likely to see the end of; for after this he is either hurried from one bar to another, or lies neglected, first in one prison and then in another, and can neither be tried nor bailed. When we see the beginning of a trouble, we know not either how long it will last or how it will issue.
