34 And G1161 some G243 cried G994 one thing, G5100 some another, G243 among G1722 the multitude: G3793 and G1161 when he could G1410 not G3361 know G1097 the certainty G804 for G1223 the tumult, G2351 he commanded G2753 him G846 to be carried G71 into G1519 the castle. G3925
Some G243 therefore G3767 G3303 cried G2896 one thing, G5100 and some another: G243 for G1063 the assembly G1577 was G2258 confused; G4797 and G2532 the more part G4119 knew G1492 not G3756 wherefore G5101 G1752 they were come together. G4905
And G1161 when there arose G1096 a great G4183 dissension, G4714 the chief captain, G5506 fearing G2125 lest G3361 Paul G3972 should have been pulled in pieces G1288 of G5259 them, G846 commanded G2753 the soldiers G4753 to go down, G2597 and to take G726 him G846 by force G726 from G1537 among G3319 them, G846 and G5037 to bring G71 him into G1519 the castle. G3925
The chief captain G5506 commanded G2753 him G846 to be brought G71 into G1519 the castle, G3925 and bade G2036 that he G846 should be examined G426 by scourging; G3148 that G2443 he might know G1921 wherefore G1223 G3739 G156 they cried G2019 so G3779 against G2019 him. G846
And G1161 when Paul's G3972 sister's G79 son G5207 heard G191 of their lying in wait, G1749 he went G3854 and G2532 entered G1525 into G1519 the castle, G3925 and told G518 Paul. G3972
G1161 On the morrow, G1887 because he would G1014 have known G1097 the certainty G804 wherefore G5101 he was accused G2723 of G3844 the Jews, G2453 he loosed G3089 him G846 from G575 his bands, G1199 and G2532 commanded G2753 the chief priests G749 and G2532 all G3650 their G846 council G4892 to appear, G2064 and G2532 brought G2609 Paul G3972 down, G2609 and set him G2476 before G1519 them. G846
G1161 On the morrow G1887 they left G1439 the horsemen G2460 to go G4198 with G4862 him, G846 and returned G5290 to G1519 the castle: G3925
Of G4012 whom G3739 I have G2192 no G3756 certain G804 thing G5100 to write G1125 unto my lord. G2962 Wherefore G1352 I have brought G4254 him G846 forth G4254 before G1909 you, G5216 and G2532 specially G3122 before G1909 thee, G4675 O king G935 Agrippa, G67 that, G3704 after examination G351 had, G1096 I might have G2192 somewhat G5100 to write. Commentary on Acts 21 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 21
We have, with a great deal of pleasure, attended the apostle in his travels throughout the Gentile nations to preach the gospel, and have seen a great harvest of souls gathered in to Christ; there we have seen likewise what persecutions he endured; yet still out of them all the Lord presently delivered him, 2 Tim. 3:11. But now we are to attend him to Jerusalem, and there into lasting bonds; the days of his service now seem to be over, and nothing to remain but days of suffering, days of darkness, for they are many. It is a thousand pities that such a workman should be laid aside; yet so it is, and we must not only acquiesce, as his friends then did, saying, "The will of the Lord be done;' but we must believe, and shall find reason to do so, that Paul in the prison, and at the bar, is as truly glorifying God, and serving Christ's interest, as Paul in the pulpit was. In this chapter we have,
Act 21:1-7
We may observe here,
Act 21:8-14
We have here Paul and his company arrived at length at Caesarea, where he designed to make some stay, it being the place where the gospel was first preached to the Gentiles, and the Holy Ghost fell upon them, ch. 10:1, 44. Now here we are told,
Act 21:15-26
In these verses we have,
Act 21:27-40
We have here Paul brought into a captivity which we are not likely to see the end of; for after this he is either hurried from one bar to another, or lies neglected, first in one prison and then in another, and can neither be tried nor bailed. When we see the beginning of a trouble, we know not either how long it will last or how it will issue.
