31 Preaching G2784 the kingdom G932 of God, G2316 and G2532 teaching G1321 those things which concern G4012 the Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 with G3326 all G3956 confidence, G3954 no man forbidding him. G209
And G1161 when they had appointed G5021 him G846 a day, G2250 there came G2240 many G4119 to G4314 him G846 into G1519 his lodging; G3578 to whom G3739 he expounded G1620 and testified G1263 the kingdom G932 of God, G2316 G5037 persuading G3982 them G846 concerning G4012 Jesus, G2424 both G5037 out of G575 the law G3551 of Moses, G3475 and G2532 out of the prophets, G4396 from G575 morning G4404 till G2193 evening. G2073
And G2532 Jesus G2424 went about G4013 all G3650 Galilee, G1056 teaching G1321 in G1722 their G846 synagogues, G4864 and G2532 preaching G2784 the gospel G2098 of the kingdom, G932 and G2532 healing G2323 all G3956 manner of sickness G3554 and G2532 all G3956 manner of disease G3119 among G1722 the people. G2992
And G2532 when they G846 had prayed, G1189 the place G5117 was shaken G4531 where G1722 G3739 they were G2258 assembled together; G4863 and G2532 they were G4130 all G537 filled G4130 with the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 and G2532 they spake G2980 the word G3056 of God G2316 with G3326 boldness. G3954
And G2532 for G5228 me, G1700 that G2443 utterance G3056 may be given G1325 unto me, G3427 that I may open G1722 G457 my G3450 mouth G4750 boldly, G1722 G3954 to make known G1107 the mystery G3466 of the gospel, G2098 For G5228 which G3739 I am an ambassador G4243 in G1722 bonds: G254 that G2443 therein G1722 G846 I may speak boldly, G3955 as G5613 I G3165 ought G1163 to speak. G2980
And G2532 many G4119 of the brethren G80 in G1722 the Lord, G2962 waxing confident G3982 by my G3450 bonds, G1199 are much more G4056 bold G5111 to speak G2980 the word G3056 without fear. G870
Notwithstanding G1161 the Lord G2962 stood G3936 with me, G3427 and G2532 strengthened G1743 me; G3165 that G2443 by G1223 me G1700 the preaching G2782 might be fully known, G4135 and G2532 that all G3956 the Gentiles G1484 might hear: G191 and G2532 I was delivered G4506 out of G1537 the mouth G4750 of the lion. G3023
And G2532 it came to pass G1096 afterward, G1722 G2517 that G2532 he G846 went G1353 throughout every G2596 city G4172 and G2532 village, G2968 preaching G2784 and G2532 shewing the glad tidings G2097 of the kingdom G932 of God: G2316 and G2532 the twelve G1427 were with G4862 him, G846
And G5037 daily G2250 G3956 in G1722 the temple, G2411 and G2532 in every G2596 house, G3624 they ceased G3973 not G3756 to teach G1321 and G2532 preach G2097 Jesus G2424 Christ. G5547
Withal G260 praying G4336 also G2532 for G4012 us, G2257 that G2443 God G2316 would open G455 unto us G2254 a door G2374 of utterance, G3056 to speak G2980 the mystery G3466 of Christ, G5547 for G1223 which G3739 I am G1210 also G2532 in bonds: G1210 That G2443 I may make G5319 it G846 manifest, G5319 as G5613 I G3165 ought G1163 to speak. G2980
Wherein G1722 G3739 I suffer trouble, G2553 as G5613 an evil doer, G2557 even unto G3360 bonds; G1199 but G235 the word G3056 of God G2316 is G1210 not G3756 bound. G1210
Now G1161 after G3326 that John G2491 was put in prison, G3860 Jesus G2424 came G2064 into G1519 Galilee, G1056 preaching G2784 the gospel G2098 of the kingdom G932 of God, G2316
And G1161 the night G3571 following G1966 the Lord G2962 stood by G2186 him, G846 and said, G2036 Be of good cheer, G2293 Paul: G3972 for G1063 as G5613 thou hast testified G1263 of G4012 me G1700 in G1519 Jerusalem, G2419 so G3779 must G1163 thou G4571 bear witness G3140 also G2532 at G1519 Rome. Commentary on Acts 28 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 28
We are the more concerned to take notice of and to improve what is here recorded concerning blessed Paul because, after the story of this chapter, we hear no more of him in the sacred history, though we have a great deal of him yet before us in his epistles. We have attended him through several chapters from one judgment-seat to another, and could at last have taken leave of him with the more pleasure if we had left him at liberty; but in this chapter we are to condole with him, and yet congratulate him.
Act 28:1-10
What a great variety of places and circumstances do we find Paul in! He was a planet, and not a fixed star. Here we have him in an island to which, in all probability, he had never come if he had not been thrown upon it by a storm; and yet it seems God has work for him to do here. Even stormy winds fulfil God's counsel, and an ill wind indeed it is that blows nobody any good; this ill wind blew good to the island of Melita; for it gave them Paul's company for three months, who was a blessing to every place he came to. This island was called Melita, lying between Sicily and Africa, twenty miles long, and twelve broad; it lies furthest from the continent of any island in the Mediterranean; it is about sixty miles from Sicily. It has been famous since for the knights of Malta, who, when the Turks overran that part of Christendom, made a noble stand, and gave some check to the progress of their arms. Now here we have,
Act 28:11-16
We have here the progress of Paul's voyage towards Rome, and his arrival there at length. A rough and dangerous voyage he had hitherto had, and narrowly escaped with his life; but after a storm comes a calm: the latter part of his voyage was easy and quiet.
We have here,
Act 28:17-22
Paul, with a great deal of expense and hazard, is brought a prisoner to Rome, and when he has come nobody appears to prosecute him or lay any thing to his charge; but he must call his own cause; and here he represents it to the chief of the Jews at Rome. It was not long since, by an edict of Claudius, all the Jews were banished from Rome, and kept out till his death; but, in the five years since then, many Jews had come thither, for the advantage of trade, though it does not appear that they were allowed any synagogue there or place of public worship; but these chief of the Jews were those of best figure among them, the most distinguished men of that religion, who had the best estates and interests. Paul called them together, being desirous to stand right in their opinion, and that there might be a good understanding between him and them. And here we are told,
Act 28:23-29
We have here a short account of a long conference which Paul had with the Jews at Rome about the Christian religion. Though they were so far prejudiced against it, because it was every where spoken against, as to call it a sect, yet they were willing to give it a hearing, which was more than the Jews at Jerusalem would do. It is probable that these Jews at Rome, being men of larger acquaintance with the world and more general conversation, were more free in their enquiries than the bigoted Jews at Jerusalem were, and would not answer this matter before they heard it.
Act 28:30-31
We are here taking our leave of the history of blessed Paul; and therefore, since God saw it not fit that we should know any more of him, we should carefully take notice of every particular of the circumstances in which we must here leave him.
