31 And G2532 when they G846 had prayed, G1189 the place G5117 was shaken G4531 where G1722 G3739 they were G2258 assembled together; G4863 and G2532 they were G4130 all G537 filled G4130 with the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 and G2532 they spake G2980 the word G3056 of God G2316 with G3326 boldness. G3954
And G2532 they were G4130 all G537 filled G4130 with the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 and G2532 began G756 to speak with G2980 other G2087 tongues, G1100 as G2531 the Spirit G4151 gave G1325 them G846 utterance. G669
And G2532 all things, G3956 whatsoever G302 G3745 ye shall ask G154 in G1722 prayer, G4335 believing, G4100 ye shall receive. G2983
Again G3825 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 That G3754 if G1437 two G1417 of you G5216 shall agree G4856 on G1909 earth G1093 as touching G4012 any G3956 thing G4229 that G3739 G1437 they shall ask, G154 it shall be done G1096 for them G846 of G3844 my G3450 Father G3962 which G3588 is in G1722 heaven. G3772 For G1063 where G3757 two G1417 or G2228 three G5140 are G1526 gathered together G4863 in G1519 my G1699 name, G3686 there G1563 am I G1510 in G1722 the midst G3319 of them. G846
Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 He that believeth G4100 on G1519 me, G1691 the works G2041 that G3739 I G1473 do G4160 shall he do G4160 also; G2548 and G2532 greater works than G3187 these G5130 shall he do; G4160 because G3754 I G1473 go G4198 unto G4314 my G3450 Father. G3962
Ye G5210 have G1586 not G3756 chosen G1586 me, G3165 but G235 I G1473 have chosen G1586 you, G5209 and G2532 ordained G5087 you, G5209 that G2443 ye G5210 should go G5217 and G2532 bring forth G5342 fruit, G2590 and G2532 that your G5216 fruit G2590 should remain: G3306 that G2443 whatsoever G3739 G302 G3748 ye shall ask G154 of the Father G3962 in G1722 my G3450 name, G3686 he may give it G1325 you. G5213
And G2532 in G1722 that G1565 day G2250 ye shall G3756 ask G2065 me G1691 nothing. G3762 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 G3754 Whatsoever G3745 G302 ye shall ask G154 the Father G3962 in G1722 my G3450 name, G3686 he will give G1325 it you. G5213 Hitherto G2193 G737 have ye asked G154 nothing G3756 G3762 in G1722 my G3450 name: G3686 ask, G154 and G2532 ye shall receive, G2983 that G2443 your G5216 joy G5479 may be G5600 full. G4137
And G1161 at G2596 midnight G3317 Paul G3972 and G2532 Silas G4609 prayed, G4336 and sang praises G5214 unto God: G2316 and G1161 the prisoners G1198 heard G1874 them. G846 And G1161 suddenly G869 there was G1096 a great G3173 earthquake, G4578 so that G5620 the foundations G2310 of the prison G1201 were shaken: G4531 and G5037 immediately G3916 all G3956 the doors G2374 were opened, G455 and G2532 every one's G3956 bands G1199 were loosed. Commentary on Acts 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
In going over the last two chapters, where we met with so many good things that the apostles did, I wondered what was become of the scribes and Pharisees, and chief priests, that they did not appear to contradict and oppose them, as they had used to treat Christ himself; surely they were so confounded at first with the pouring out of the Spirit that they were for a time struck dumb! But I find we have not lost them; their forces rally again, and here we have an encounter between them and the apostles; for from the beginning the gospel met with opposition. Here,
Act 4:1-4
We have here the interests of the kingdom of heaven successfully carried on, and the powers of darkness appearing against them to put a stop to them. let Christ's servants be ever so resolute, Satan's agents will be spiteful; and therefore, let Satan's agents be ever so spiteful, Christ's servants ought to be resolute.
Act 4:5-14
We have here the trial of Peter and John before the judges of the ecclesiastical court, for preaching a sermon concerning Jesus Christ, and working a miracle in his name. This is charged upon them as a crime, which was the best service they could do to God or men.
Act 4:15-22
We have here the issue of the trial of Peter and John before the council. They came off now with flying colours, because they must be trained up to sufferings by degrees, and by less trials be prepared for greater. They now but run with the footmen; hereafter we shall have them contending with horses, Jer. 12:5.
Act 4:23-31
We hear no more at present of the chief priests, what they did when they had dismissed Peter and John, but are to attend those two witnesses. And here we have,
Act 4:32-37
We have a general idea given us in these verses, and it is a very beautiful one, of the spirit and state of this truly primitive church; it is conspectus saeculi-a view of that age of infancy and innocence.
