4 Howbeit G1161 many G4183 of them which heard G191 the word G3056 believed; G4100 and G2532 the number G706 of the men G435 was G1096 about G5616 five G4002 thousand. G5505
Then G3303 G3767 they that gladly G780 received G588 his G846 word G3056 were baptized: G907 and G2532 the same G1565 day G2250 there were added G4369 unto them about G5616 three thousand G5153 souls. G5590
Therefore will I divide H2505 him a portion with the great, H7227 and he shall divide H2505 the spoil H7998 with the strong; H6099 because he hath poured out H6168 his soul H5315 unto death: H4194 and he was numbered H4487 with the transgressors; H6586 and he bare H5375 the sin H2399 of many, H7227 and made intercession H6293 for the transgressors. H6586
Now G1161 thanks G5485 be unto God, G2316 which always G3842 causeth G2358 us G2248 to triumph G2358 in G1722 Christ, G5547 and G2532 maketh manifest G5319 the savour G3744 of his G846 knowledge G1108 by G1223 us G2257 in G1722 every G3956 place. G5117 For G3754 we are G2070 unto God G2316 a sweet savour G2175 of Christ, G5547 in G1722 them that are saved, G4982 and G2532 in G1722 them that perish: G622 To G3739 the one G3303 we are the savour G3744 of death G2288 unto G1519 death; G2288 and G1161 to the other G3739 the savour G3744 of life G2222 unto G1519 life. G2222 And G2532 who G5101 is sufficient G2425 for G4314 these things? G5023 For G1063 we are G2070 not G3756 as G5613 many, G4183 which corrupt G2585 the word G3056 of God: G2316 but G235 as G5613 of G1537 sincerity, G1505 but G235 as G5613 of G1537 God, G2316 in the sight G2714 of God G2316 speak we G2980 in G1722 Christ. G5547
But G1161 I would G1014 ye G5209 should understand, G1097 brethren, G80 that G3754 the things which happened unto G2596 me G1691 have fallen out G2064 rather G3123 unto G1519 the furtherance G4297 of the gospel; G2098 So that G5620 my G3450 bonds G1199 in G1722 Christ G5547 are G1096 manifest G5318 in G1722 all G3650 the palace, G4232 and G2532 in all G3956 other G3062 places; And G2532 many G4119 of the brethren G80 in G1722 the Lord, G2962 waxing confident G3982 by my G3450 bonds, G1199 are much more G4056 bold G5111 to speak G2980 the word G3056 without fear. G870 Some G5100 indeed G3303 preach G2784 Christ G5547 even G2532 of G1223 envy G5355 and G2532 strife; G2054 and G1161 some G5100 also G2532 of G1223 good will: G2107 The one G3303 preach G2605 Christ G5547 of G1537 contention, G2052 not G3756 sincerely, G55 supposing G3633 to add G2018 affliction G2347 to my G3450 bonds: G1199 But G1161 the other of G1537 love, G26 knowing G1492 that G3754 I am set G2749 for G1519 the defence G627 of the gospel. G2098 What G5101 then? G1063 notwithstanding, G4133 every G3956 way, G5158 whether G1535 in pretence, G4392 or G1535 in truth, G225 Christ G5547 is preached; G2605 and G2532 I G5463 therein G1722 G5129 do rejoice, G5463 yea, G235 and G2532 will rejoice. G5463
Wherein G1722 G3739 I suffer trouble, G2553 as G5613 an evil doer, G2557 even unto G3360 bonds; G1199 but G235 the word G3056 of God G2316 is G1210 not G3756 bound. G1210 Therefore G1223 G5124 I endure G5278 all things G3956 for G1588 the elect's G1588 sakes, G1223 that G2443 they G846 may G5177 also G2532 obtain G5177 the salvation G4991 which G3588 is in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 with G3326 eternal G166 glory. Commentary on Acts 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
In going over the last two chapters, where we met with so many good things that the apostles did, I wondered what was become of the scribes and Pharisees, and chief priests, that they did not appear to contradict and oppose them, as they had used to treat Christ himself; surely they were so confounded at first with the pouring out of the Spirit that they were for a time struck dumb! But I find we have not lost them; their forces rally again, and here we have an encounter between them and the apostles; for from the beginning the gospel met with opposition. Here,
Act 4:1-4
We have here the interests of the kingdom of heaven successfully carried on, and the powers of darkness appearing against them to put a stop to them. let Christ's servants be ever so resolute, Satan's agents will be spiteful; and therefore, let Satan's agents be ever so spiteful, Christ's servants ought to be resolute.
Act 4:5-14
We have here the trial of Peter and John before the judges of the ecclesiastical court, for preaching a sermon concerning Jesus Christ, and working a miracle in his name. This is charged upon them as a crime, which was the best service they could do to God or men.
Act 4:15-22
We have here the issue of the trial of Peter and John before the council. They came off now with flying colours, because they must be trained up to sufferings by degrees, and by less trials be prepared for greater. They now but run with the footmen; hereafter we shall have them contending with horses, Jer. 12:5.
Act 4:23-31
We hear no more at present of the chief priests, what they did when they had dismissed Peter and John, but are to attend those two witnesses. And here we have,
Act 4:32-37
We have a general idea given us in these verses, and it is a very beautiful one, of the spirit and state of this truly primitive church; it is conspectus saeculi-a view of that age of infancy and innocence.
