39 And G1161 when G3753 they were come up G305 out of G1537 the water, G5204 the Spirit G4151 of the Lord G2962 caught away G726 Philip, G5376 G2532 that the eunuch G2135 saw G1492 G3756 him G846 no more: G3765 and G1063 he went G4198 on his G846 way G3598 rejoicing. G5463
Afterwards the spirit H7307 took me up, H5375 and brought H935 me in a vision H4758 by the Spirit H7307 of God H430 into Chaldea, H3778 to them of the captivity. H1473 So the vision H4758 that I had seen H7200 went up H5927 from me.
And he put forth H7971 the form H8403 of an hand, H3027 and took H3947 me by a lock H6734 of mine head; H7218 and the spirit H7307 lifted me up H5375 between the earth H776 and the heaven, H8064 and brought H935 me in the visions H4759 of God H430 to Jerusalem, H3389 to the door H6607 of the inner H6442 gate H8179 that looketh H6437 toward the north; H6828 where was the seat H4186 of the image H5566 of jealousy, H7068 which provoketh to jealousy. H7069
And they said H559 unto him, Behold now, there be H3426 with thy servants H5650 fifty H2572 strong H2428 men; H1121 H582 let them go, H3212 we pray thee, and seek H1245 thy master: H113 lest peradventure the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 hath taken him up, H5375 and cast H7993 him upon some H259 mountain, H2022 or into some H259 valley. H1516 And he said, H559 Ye shall not send. H7971
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone H3212 from thee, that the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 shall carry H5375 thee whither I know H3045 not; and so when I come H935 and tell H5046 Ahab, H256 and he cannot find H4672 thee, he shall slay H2026 me: but I thy servant H5650 fear H3372 the LORD H3068 from my youth. H5271
I knew G1492 a man G444 in G1722 Christ G5547 above G4253 fourteen G1180 years G2094 ago, G4253 (whether G1535 in G1722 the body, G4983 I cannot G3756 tell; G1492 or whether G1535 out G1622 of the body, G4983 I cannot G3756 tell: G1492 God G2316 knoweth;) G1492 such an one G5108 caught up G726 to G2193 the third G5154 heaven. G3772 And G2532 I knew G1492 such G5108 a man, G444 (whether G1535 in G1722 the body, G4983 or G1535 out G1622 of the body, G4983 I cannot G3756 tell: G1492 God G2316 knoweth;) G1492 How that G3754 he was caught up G726 into G1519 paradise, G3857 and G2532 heard G191 unspeakable G731 words, G4487 which G3739 it is G1832 not G3756 lawful G1832 for a man G444 to utter. G2980
Moreover the spirit H7307 lifted me up, H5375 and brought H935 me unto the east H6931 gate H8179 of the LORD'S H3068 house, H1004 which looketh H6437 eastward: H6921 and behold at the door H6607 of the gate H8179 five H2568 and twenty H6242 men; H376 among H8432 whom I saw H7200 Jaazaniah H2970 the son H1121 of Azur, H5809 and Pelatiah H6410 the son H1121 of Benaiah, H1141 princes H8269 of the people. H5971
Then the spirit H7307 took me up, H5375 and I heard H8085 behind H310 me a voice H6963 of a great H1419 rushing, H7494 saying, Blessed H1288 be the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 from his place. H4725 I heard also the noise H6963 of the wings H3671 of the living creatures H2416 that touched H5401 one H802 another, H269 and the noise H6963 of the wheels H212 over against H5980 them, and a noise H6963 of a great H1419 rushing. H7494 So the spirit H7307 lifted me up, H5375 and took me away, H3947 and I went H3212 in bitterness, H4751 in the heat H2534 of my spirit; H7307 but the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 was strong H2388 upon me.
And G2532 again G3825 he saith, G3004 Rejoice, ye G2165 Gentiles, G1484 with G3326 his G846 people. G2992 And G2532 again, G3825 Praise G134 the Lord, G2962 all G3956 ye G134 Gentiles; G1484 and G2532 laud G1867 him, G846 all ye G3956 people. G2992 And G2532 again, G3825 Esaias G2268 saith, G3004 There shall be G2071 a root G4491 of Jesse, G2421 and G2532 he that shall rise G450 to reign over G757 the Gentiles; G1484 in G1909 him G846 shall G1679 the Gentiles G1484 trust. G1679 Now G1161 the God G2316 of hope G1680 fill G4137 you G5209 with all G3956 joy G5479 and G2532 peace G1515 in G1722 believing, G4100 that G1519 ye G5209 may abound G4052 in G1722 hope, G1680 through G1722 the power G1411 of the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
G1161 Let G2744 the brother G80 of low degree G5011 rejoice G2744 in G1722 that he G846 is exalted: G5311 But G1161 the rich, G4145 in G1722 that he G846 is made low: G5014 because G3754 as G5613 the flower G438 of the grass G5528 he shall pass away. G3928
And G1161 the disciples G3101 were filled with G4137 joy, G5479 and G2532 with the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
Again, G3825 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto treasure G2344 hid G2928 in G1722 a field; G68 the which G3739 when a man G444 hath found, G2147 he hideth, G2928 and G2532 for G575 joy G5479 thereof G846 goeth G5217 and G2532 selleth G4453 all G3956 that G3745 he hath, G2192 and G2532 buyeth G59 that G1565 field. G68
And G2532 Jesus, G2424 when he was baptized, G907 went up G305 straightway G2117 out of G575 the water: G5204 and, G2532 lo, G2400 the heavens G3772 were opened G455 unto him, G846 and G2532 he saw G1492 the Spirit G4151 of God G2316 descending G2597 like G5616 a dove, G4058 and G2532 lighting G2064 upon G1909 him: G846
As one H376 whom his mother H517 comforteth, H5162 so will I comfort H5162 you; and ye shall be comforted H5162 in Jerusalem. H3389 And when ye see H7200 this, your heart H3820 shall rejoice, H7797 and your bones H6106 shall flourish H6524 like an herb: H1877 and the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 shall be known H3045 toward his servants, H5650 and his indignation H2194 toward his enemies. H341
I will greatly H7797 rejoice H7797 in the LORD, H3068 my soul H5315 shall be joyful H1523 in my God; H430 for he hath clothed H3847 me with the garments H899 of salvation, H3468 he hath covered H3271 me with the robe H4598 of righteousness, H6666 as a bridegroom H2860 decketh H3547 himself with ornaments, H6287 and as a bride H3618 adorneth H5710 herself with her jewels. H3627
For ye shall go out H3318 with joy, H8057 and be led forth H2986 with peace: H7965 the mountains H2022 and the hills H1389 shall break forth H6476 before H6440 you into singing, H7440 and all the trees H6086 of the field H7704 shall clap H4222 their hands. H3709 Instead of the thorn H5285 shall come up H5927 the fir tree, H1265 and instead of the brier H5636 shall come up H5927 the myrtle tree: H1918 and it shall be to the LORD H3068 for a name, H8034 for an everlasting H5769 sign H226 that shall not be cut off. H3772
The wilderness H4057 and the solitary place H6723 shall be glad H7797 for them; and the desert H6160 shall rejoice, H1523 and blossom H6524 as the rose. H2261 It shall blossom H6524 abundantly, H6524 and rejoice H1523 even with joy H1525 and singing: H7444 the glory H3519 of Lebanon H3844 shall be given H5414 unto it, the excellency H1926 of Carmel H3760 and Sharon, H8289 they shall see H7200 the glory H3519 of the LORD, H3068 and the excellency H1926 of our God. Commentary on Acts 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this chapter we have an account of the persecutions of the Christians, and the propagating of Christianity thereby. It was strange, but very true, that the disciples of Christ the more they were afflicted the more they multiplied.
Act 8:1-3
In these verses we have,
Act 8:4-13
Samson's riddle is here again unriddled: Out of the eater comes forth meat, and out of the strong sweetness. The persecution that was designed to extirpate the church was by the overruling providence of God made an occasion of the enlargement of it. Christ had said, I am come to send fire on the earth; and they thought, by scattering those who were kindled with that fire, to have put it out, but instead of this they did but help to spread it.
Act 8:14-25
God had wonderfully owned Philip in his work as an evangelist at Samaria, but he could do no more than an evangelist; there were some peculiar powers reserved to the apostles, for the keeping up of the dignity of their office, and here we have an account of what was done by two of them there-Peter and John. The twelve kept together at Jerusalem (v. 1), and thither these good tidings were brought them that Samaria had received the word of God (v. 14), that a great harvest of souls was gathered, and was likely to be gathered in to Christ there. The word of God was not only preached to them, but received by them; they bade it welcome, admitted the light of it, and submitted to the power of it: When they heard it, they sent unto them Peter and John. If Peter had been, as some say he was, the prince of the apostles, he would have sent some of them, or, if he had seen cause, would have gone himself of his own accord; but he was so far from this that he submitted to an order of the house, and, as a servant to the body, went whither they sent him. Two apostles were sent, the two most eminent, to Samaria,
Act 8:26-40
We have here the story of the conversion of an Ethiopian eunuch to the faith of Christ, by whom, we have reason to think, the knowledge of Christ was sent into that country where he lived, and that scripture fulfilled, Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands (one of the first of the nations) unto God, Ps. 68:31.
