40 But G1161 Peter G4074 put G1544 them all G3956 forth, G1854 and kneeled down, G5087 G1119 and prayed; G4336 and G2532 turning G1994 him to G4314 the body G4983 said, G2036 Tabitha, G5000 arise. G450 And G1161 she opened G455 her G846 eyes: G3788 and G2532 when she saw G1492 Peter, G4074 she sat up. G339
But G1161 when G3753 the people G3793 were put forth, G1544 he went in, G1525 and took G2902 her G846 by the hand, G5495 and G2532 the maid G2877 arose. G1453
And G1161 he kneeled down, G5087 G1119 and cried G2896 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 Lord, G2962 lay G2476 not G3361 this G5026 sin G266 to their G846 charge. And G2532 when he had said G2036 this, G5124 he fell asleep. G2837
And when Elisha H477 was come H935 into the house, H1004 behold, the child H5288 was dead, H4191 and laid H7901 upon his bed. H4296 He went in H935 therefore, and shut H5462 the door H1817 upon them twain, H8147 and prayed H6419 unto the LORD. H3068 And he went up, H5927 and lay H7901 upon the child, H3206 and put H7760 his mouth H6310 upon his mouth, H6310 and his eyes H5869 upon his eyes, H5869 and his hands H3709 upon his hands: H3709 and he stretched H1457 himself upon the child; and the flesh H1320 of the child H3206 waxed warm. H2552 Then he returned, H7725 and walked H3212 in the house H1004 to H259 H2008 and fro; H259 H2008 and went up, H5927 and stretched H1457 himself upon him: and the child H5288 sneezed H2237 seven H7651 times, H6471 and the child H5288 opened H6491 his eyes. H5869 And he called H7121 Gehazi, H1522 and said, H559 Call H7121 this Shunammite. H7767 So he called H7121 her. And when she was come in H935 unto him, he said, H559 Take up H5375 thy son. H1121
And he said H559 unto her, Give H5414 me thy son. H1121 And he took H3947 him out of her bosom, H2436 and carried him up H5927 into a loft, H5944 where he abode, H3427 and laid H7901 him upon his own bed. H4296 And he cried H7121 unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 O LORD H3068 my God, H430 hast thou also brought evil H7489 upon the widow H490 with whom I sojourn, H1481 by slaying H4191 her son? H1121 And he stretched H4058 himself upon the child H3206 three H7969 times, H6471 and cried H7121 unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 O LORD H3068 my God, H430 I pray thee, let this child's H3206 soul H5315 come H7725 into him H7130 again. H7725 And the LORD H3068 heard H8085 the voice H6963 of Elijah; H452 and the soul H5315 of the child H3206 came H7725 into him H7130 again, H7725 and he revived. H2421 And Elijah H452 took H3947 the child, H3206 and brought him down H3381 out of the chamber H5944 into the house, H1004 and delivered H5414 him unto his mother: H517 and Elijah H452 said, H559 See, H7200 thy son H1121 liveth. H2416
And G2532 they laughed G2606 him G846 to scorn. G2606 But G1161 when he had put G1544 them all G537 out, G1544 he taketh G3880 the father G3962 and G2532 the mother G3384 of the damsel, G3813 and G2532 them that were with G3326 him, G846 and G2532 entereth in G1531 where G3699 the damsel G3813 was G2258 lying. G345 And G2532 he took G2902 the damsel G3813 by the hand, G5495 and said G3004 unto her, G846 Talitha G5008 cumi; G2891 which G3739 is, G2076 being interpreted, G3177 Damsel, G2877 I say G3004 unto thee, G4671 arise. G1453 And G2532 straightway G2112 the damsel G2877 arose, G450 and G2532 walked; G4043 for G1063 she was G2258 of the age of twelve G1427 years. G2094 And G2532 they were astonished G1839 with a great G3173 astonishment. G1611
When G1161 Jesus G2424 saw G1492 that G3754 the people G3793 came running together, G1998 he rebuked G2008 the foul G169 spirit, G4151 saying G3004 unto him, G846 Thou dumb G216 and G2532 deaf G2974 spirit, G4151 I G1473 charge G2004 thee, G4671 come G1831 out of G1537 him, G846 and G2532 enter G1525 no more G3371 into G1519 him. G846
And G1161 he G846 put G1544 them all G3956 out, G1854 and G2532 took G2902 her G846 by the hand, G5495 and called, G5455 saying, G3004 Maid, G3816 arise. G1453
And G2532 he G846 was withdrawn G645 from G575 them G846 about G5616 a stone's G3037 cast, G1000 and G2532 kneeled down, G5087 G1119 and prayed, G4336
And G2532 when he thus G5023 had spoken, G2036 he cried G2905 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 Lazarus, G2976 come G1204 forth. G1854 And G2532 he that was dead G2348 came forth, G1831 bound G1210 hand G5495 and G2532 foot G4228 with graveclothes: G2750 and G2532 his G846 face G3799 was bound about G4019 with a napkin. G4676 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Loose G3089 him, G846 and G2532 let him G863 go. G5217
And G2532 when he had thus G5023 spoken, G2036 he G846 kneeled G1119 down, G5087 and prayed G4336 with G4862 them G846 all. G3956
And G1161 when G3753 we G2248 had G1096 accomplished G1822 those days, G2250 we departed G1831 and went our way; G4198 and they all G3956 brought G4311 us G2248 on our way, G4311 with G4862 wives G1135 and G2532 children, G5043 till G2193 we were out of G1854 the city: G4172 and G2532 we kneeled down G5087 G1119 on G1909 the shore, G123 and prayed. Commentary on Acts 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter we have,
Act 9:1-9
We found mention made of Saul twice or thrice in the story of Stephen, for the sacred penman longed to come to his story; and now we are come to it, not quite taking leave of Peter but from henceforward being mostly taken up with Paul the apostle of the Gentiles, as Peter was of the circumcision. His name in Hebrew was Saul-desired, though as remarkably little in stature as his namesake king Saul was tall and stately; one of the ancients calls him, Homo tricubitalis-but four feet and a half in height; his Roman name which he went by among the citizens of Rome was Paul-little. He was born in Tarsus, a city of Cilicia, a free city of the Romans, and himself a freeman of that city. His father and mother were both native Jews; therefore he calls himself a Hebrew of the Hebrews; he was of the tribe of Benjamin, which adhered to Judah. His education was in the schools of Tarsus first, which was a little Athens for learning; there he acquainted himself with the philosophy and poetry of the Greeks. Thence he was sent to the university at Jerusalem, to study divinity and the Jewish law. His tutor was Gamaliel, an eminent Pharisee. He had extraordinary natural parts, and improved mightily in learning. He had likewise a handicraft trade (being bred to tent-making), which was common with those among the Jews who were bred scholars (as Dr. Lightfoot saith), for the earning of their maintenance, and the avoiding of idleness. This is the young man on whom the grace of God wrought this mighty change here recorded, about a year after the ascension of Christ, or little more. We are here told,
Act 9:10-22
As for God, his work is perfect; if he begin, he will make an end: a good work was begun in Saul, when he was brought to Christ's feet, in that word, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And never did Christ leave any that were brought to that. Though Saul was sadly mortified when he lay three days blind, yet he was not abandoned. Christ here takes care of the work of his own hands. He that hath torn will heal-that hath smitten will bind up-that hath convinced will comfort.
Act 9:23-31
Luke here makes no mention of Paul's journey into Arabia, which he tells us himself was immediately after his conversion, Gal. 1:16, 17. As soon as God had revealed his Son in him, that he might preach him, he went not up to Jerusalem, to receive instructions from the apostles (as any other convert would have done, that was designed for the ministry), but he went to Arabia, where there was new ground to break up, and where he would have opportunity of teaching, but not learning; thence he returned to Damascus, and there, three years after his conversion, this happened, which is here recorded.
Act 9:32-35
Here we have,
Act 9:36-43
Here we have another miracle wrought by Peter, for the confirming of the gospel, and which exceeded the former-the raising of Tabitha to life when she had been for some time dead. Here is,
