6 Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Gaza, H5804 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive H1540 the whole H8003 captivity, H1546 to deliver them up H5462 to Edom: H123
The Philistines H6430 also had invaded H6584 the cities H5892 of the low country, H8219 and of the south H5045 of Judah, H3063 and had taken H3920 Bethshemesh, H1053 and Ajalon, H357 and Gederoth, H1450 and Shocho H7755 with the villages H1323 thereof, and Timnah H8553 with the villages H1323 thereof, Gimzo H1579 also and the villages H1323 thereof: and they dwelt H3427 there.
In the day H3117 that thou stoodest H5975 on the other side, in the day H3117 that the strangers H2114 carried away captive H7617 his forces, H2428 and foreigners H5237 entered H935 into his gates, H8179 and cast H3032 lots H1486 upon Jerusalem, H3389 even thou wast as one H259 of them.
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Tyrus, H6865 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they delivered up H5462 the whole H8003 captivity H1546 to Edom, H123 and remembered H2142 not the brotherly H251 covenant: H1285
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Edom, H123 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because he did pursue H7291 his brother H251 with the sword, H2719 and did cast off H7843 all pity, H7356 and his anger H639 did tear H2963 perpetually, H5703 and he kept H8104 his wrath H5678 for ever: H5331
Because of the day H3117 that cometh H935 to spoil H7703 all the Philistines, H6430 and to cut off H3772 from Tyrus H6865 and Zidon H6721 every helper H5826 that remaineth: H8300 for the LORD H3068 will spoil H7703 the Philistines, H6430 the remnant H7611 of the country H339 of Caphtor. H3731 Baldness H7144 is come H935 upon Gaza; H5804 Ashkelon H831 is cut off H1820 with the remnant H7611 of their valley: H6010 how long wilt thou cut H1413 thyself?
Because thou hast had a perpetual H5769 hatred, H342 and hast shed H5064 the blood of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 by the force H3027 of the sword H2719 in the time H6256 of their calamity, H343 in the time H6256 that their iniquity H5771 had an end: H7093
For Gaza H5804 shall be forsaken, H5800 and Ashkelon H831 a desolation: H8077 they shall drive out H1644 Ashdod H795 at the noon day, H6672 and Ekron H6138 shall be rooted up. H6131 Woe H1945 unto the inhabitants H3427 of the sea H3220 coast, H2256 the nation H1471 of the Cherethites! H3774 the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 is against you; O Canaan, H3667 the land H776 of the Philistines, H6430 I will even destroy H6 thee, that there shall be no inhabitant. H3427 And the sea H3220 coast H2256 shall be dwellings H5116 and cottages H3741 for shepherds, H7462 and folds H1448 for flocks. H6629 And the coast H2256 shall be for the remnant H7611 of the house H1004 of Judah; H3063 they shall feed H7462 thereupon: in the houses H1004 of Ashkelon H831 shall they lie down H7257 in the evening: H6153 for the LORD H3068 their God H430 shall visit H6485 them, and turn away H7725 their captivity. H7622 H7622
Ashkelon H831 shall see H7200 it, and fear; H3372 Gaza H5804 also shall see it, and be very H3966 sorrowful, H2342 and Ekron; H6138 for her expectation H4007 shall be ashamed; H3001 and the king H4428 shall perish H6 from Gaza, H5804 and Ashkelon H831 shall not be inhabited. H3427
Moreover the LORD H3068 stirred up H5782 against Jehoram H3088 the spirit H7307 of the Philistines, H6430 and of the Arabians, H6163 that were near H5921 H3027 the Ethiopians: H3569 And they came up H5927 into Judah, H3063 and brake H1234 into it, and carried away H7617 all the substance H7399 that was found H4672 in the king's H4428 house, H1004 and his sons H1121 also, and his wives; H802 so that there was never a son H1121 left H7604 him, save Jehoahaz, H3059 the youngest H6996 of his sons. H1121
Rejoice H8055 not thou, whole Palestina, H6429 because the rod H7626 of him that smote H5221 thee is broken: H7665 for out of the serpent's H5175 root H8328 shall come forth H3318 a cockatrice, H6848 and his fruit H6529 shall be a fiery H8314 flying H5774 serpent. H8314 And the firstborn H1060 of the poor H1800 shall feed, H7462 and the needy H34 shall lie down H7257 in safety: H983 and I will kill H4191 thy root H8328 with famine, H7458 and he shall slay H2026 thy remnant. H7611 Howl, H3213 O gate; H8179 cry, H2199 O city; H5892 thou, whole Palestina, H6429 art dissolved: H4127 for there shall come H935 from the north H6828 a smoke, H6227 and none shall be alone H909 in his appointed times. H4151
The word H1697 of the LORD H3068 that came to Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 against the Philistines, H6430 before that Pharaoh H6547 smote H5221 Gaza. H5804
Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Because the Philistines H6430 have dealt H6213 by revenge, H5360 and have taken H5358 vengeance H5359 with a despiteful H7589 heart, H5315 to destroy H4889 it for the old H5769 hatred; H342 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Behold, I will stretch out H5186 mine hand H3027 upon the Philistines, H6430 and I will cut off H3772 the Cherethims, H3774 and destroy H6 the remnant H7611 of the sea H3220 coast. H2348
And G1161 the angel G32 of the Lord G2962 spake G2980 unto G4314 Philip, G5376 saying, G3004 Arise, G450 and G2532 go G4198 toward G2596 the south G3314 unto G1909 the way G3598 that goeth down G2597 from G575 Jerusalem G2419 unto G1519 Gaza, G1048 which G3778 is G2076 desert. G2048

Commentary on Amos 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Prophecy of Amos
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
Amo 1:1-2
Here is,
Amo 1:3-15
What the Lord says here may be explained by what he says Jer. 12:14, Thus said the Lord, against all my evil neighbours that touch the inheritance of my people Israel, Behold, I will pluck them out. Damascus was a near neighbour to Israel on the north, Tyre and Gaza on the west, Edom on the south, Ammon and (in the next chapter) Moab on the east; and all of them had been, one time, one way, or other, pricking briers and grieving thorns to Israel, evil neighbours to them; and, because God espouses his people's cause, he there calls them his evil neighbours, and here comes forth to reckon with them. The method is taken in dealing with each of them is, in part, the same, and therefore we put them together, and yet in each there is something peculiar.
