13 In that day H3117 shall the fair H3303 virgins H1330 and young men H970 faint H5968 for thirst. H6772
Lest I strip H6584 her naked, H6174 and set H3322 her as in the day H3117 that she was born, H3205 and make H7760 her as a wilderness, H4057 and set H7896 her like a dry H6723 land, H776 and slay H4191 her with thirst. H6772
The LORD H3068 is righteous; H6662 for I have rebelled H4784 against his commandment: H6310 hear, H8085 I pray you, all people, H5971 and behold H7200 my sorrow: H4341 my virgins H1330 and my young men H970 are gone H1980 into captivity. H7628
The sword H2719 without, H2351 and terror H367 within, H2315 shall destroy H7921 both the young man H970 and the virgin, H1330 the suckling H3243 also with the man H376 of gray hairs. H7872
[[A Psalm H4210 of David, H1732 when he was in the wilderness H4057 of Judah.]] H3063 O God, H430 thou art my God; H410 early will I seek H7836 thee: my soul H5315 thirsteth H6770 for thee, my flesh H1320 longeth H3642 for thee in a dry H6723 and thirsty H5889 land, H776 where no H1097 water H4325 is;
That our sons H1121 may be as plants H5195 grown up H1431 in their youth; H5271 that our daughters H1323 may be as corner stones, H2106 polished H2404 after the similitude H8403 of a palace: H1964 That our garners H4200 may be full, H4392 affording H6329 all manner of store: H2177 H2177 that our sheep H6629 may bring forth thousands H503 and ten thousands H7231 in our streets: H2351 That our oxen H441 may be strong to labour; H5445 that there be no breaking in, H6556 nor going out; H3318 that there be no complaining H6682 in our streets. H7339 Happy H835 is that people, H5971 that is in such a case: H3602 yea, happy H835 is that people, H5971 whose God H430 is the LORD. H3068
Even the youths H5288 shall faint H3286 and be weary, H3021 and the young men H970 shall utterly H3782 fall: H3782
When the poor H6041 and needy H34 seek H1245 water, H4325 and there is none, and their tongue H3956 faileth H5405 for thirst, H6772 I the LORD H3068 will hear H6030 them, I the God H430 of Israel H3478 will not forsake H5800 them. I will open H6605 rivers H5104 in high places, H8205 and fountains H4599 in the midst H8432 of the valleys: H1237 I will make H7760 the wilderness H4057 a pool H98 of water, H4325 and the dry H6723 land H776 springs H4161 of water. H4325 I will plant H5414 in the wilderness H4057 the cedar, H730 the shittah tree, H7848 and the myrtle, H1918 and the oil H8081 tree; H6086 I will set H7760 in the desert H6160 the fir tree, H1265 and the pine, H8410 and the box tree H8391 together: H3162 That they may see, H7200 and know, H3045 and consider, H7760 and understand H7919 together, H3162 that the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 hath done H6213 this, and the Holy One H6918 of Israel H3478 hath created H1254 it.
The elders H2205 of the daughter H1323 of Zion H6726 sit H3427 upon the ground, H776 and keep silence: H1826 they have cast up H5927 dust H6083 upon their heads; H7218 they have girded H2296 themselves with sackcloth: H8242 the virgins H1330 of Jerusalem H3389 hang down H3381 their heads H7218 to the ground. Commentary on Amos 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
Sinful times are here attended with sorrowful times, so necessary is the connexion between them; it is threatened here again and again that the laughter shall be turned into mourning.
Amo 8:1-3
The great reason why sinners defer their repentance de die in diem-from day to day, is because they think God thus defers his judgments, and there is no song wherewith they so effectually sing themselves asleep as that, My Lord delays his coming; and therefore God, by his prophets, frequently represents to Israel the day of his wrath not only as just and certain, but as very near and hastening on apace; so he does in these verses.
Amo 8:4-10
God is here contending with proud oppressors, and showing them,
