7 And I saw H7200 him come H5060 close unto H681 the ram, H352 and he was moved with choler H4843 against him, and smote H5221 the ram, H352 and brake H7665 his two H8147 horns: H7161 and there was no power H3581 in the ram H352 to stand H5975 before H6440 him, but he cast him down H7993 to the ground, H776 and stamped H7429 upon him: and there was none that could deliver H5337 the ram H352 out of his hand. H3027
After H870 this H1836 I saw H1934 H2370 in the night H3916 visions, H2376 and behold H718 a fourth H7244 beast, H2423 dreadful H1763 and terrible, H574 and strong H8624 exceedingly; H3493 and it had great H7260 iron H6523 teeth: H8128 it devoured H399 and brake in pieces, H1855 and stamped H7512 the residue H7606 with the feet H7271 of it: and it H1932 was diverse H8133 from H4481 all H3606 the beasts H2423 that were before H6925 it; and it had ten H6236 horns. H7162
And the king H4428 of the south H5045 shall be moved with choler, H4843 and shall come forth H3318 and fight H3898 with him, even with the king H4428 of the north: H6828 and he shall set forth H5975 a great H7227 multitude; H1995 but the multitude H1995 shall be given H5414 into his hand. H3027
And when the men H582 of Ai H5857 looked H6437 behind H310 them, they saw, H7200 and, behold, the smoke H6227 of the city H5892 ascended up H5927 to heaven, H8064 and they had no power H3027 to flee H5127 this way or that way: H2008 and the people H5971 that fled H5127 to the wilderness H4057 turned back H2015 upon the pursuers. Commentary on Daniel 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
The visions and prophecies of this chapter look only and entirely at the events that were then shortly to come to pass in the monarchies of Persia and Greece, and seem not to have any further reference at all. Nothing is here said of the Chaldean monarchy, for that was now just at its period; and therefore this chapter is written not in Chaldee, as the six foregoing chapters were, for the benefit of the Chaldeans, but in Hebrew, and so are the rest of the chapters to the end of the book, for the service of the Jews, that they might know what troubles were before them and what the issue of them would be, and might provide accordingly. In this chapter we have,
The Jewish church, from its beginning, had been all along, more or less, blessed with prophets, men divinely inspired to explain God's mind to them in his providences and give them some prospect of what was coming upon them; but, soon after Ezra's time, divine inspiration ceased, and there was no more any prophet till the gospel day dawned. And therefore the events of that time were here foretold by Daniel, and left upon record, that even then God might not leave himself without witness, nor them without a guide.
