21 Yea, whiles I was speaking H1696 in prayer, H8605 even the man H376 Gabriel, H1403 whom I had seen H7200 in the vision H2377 at the beginning, H8462 being caused to fly H3286 swiftly, H3288 touched H5060 me about the time H6256 of the evening H6153 oblation. H4503
And G2532 the angel G32 answering G611 said G2036 unto him, G846 I G1473 am G1510 Gabriel, G1043 that stand G3936 in the presence G1799 of God; G2316 and G2532 am sent G649 to speak G2980 unto G4314 thee, G4571 and G2532 to shew G2097 thee G4671 these G5023 glad tidings. G2097
And I heard H8085 a man's H120 voice H6963 between the banks of Ulai, H195 which called, H7121 and said, H559 Gabriel, H1403 make this H1975 man to understand H995 the vision. H4758
And, behold, one like the similitude H1823 of the sons H1121 of men H120 touched H5060 my lips: H8193 then I opened H6605 my mouth, H6310 and spake, H1696 and said H559 unto him that stood H5975 before me, O my lord, H113 by the vision H4759 my sorrows H6735 are turned H2015 upon me, and I have retained H6113 no strength. H3581
And it came to pass at the time of the offering H5927 of the evening sacrifice, H4503 that Elijah H452 the prophet H5030 came near, H5066 and said, H559 LORD H3068 God H430 of Abraham, H85 Isaac, H3327 and of Israel, H3478 let it be known H3045 this day H3117 that thou art God H430 in Israel, H3478 and that I am thy servant, H5650 and that I have done H6213 all these things at thy word. H1697
Above H4605 it stood H5975 the seraphims: H8314 each one H259 had six H8337 wings; H3671 with twain H8147 he covered H3680 his face, H6440 and with twain H8147 he covered H3680 his feet, H7272 and with twain H8147 he did fly. H5774
And, G2532 behold, G2400 the angel G32 of the Lord G2962 came upon G2186 him, and G2532 a light G5457 shined G2989 in G1722 the prison: G3612 and G1161 he smote G3960 Peter G4074 on the side, G4125 and raised G1453 him G846 up, G1453 saying, G3004 Arise up G450 quickly. G1722 G5034 And G2532 his G846 chains G254 fell off G1601 from G1537 his hands. G5495
And G2532 of G4314 G3303 the angels G32 he saith, G3004 Who maketh G4160 his G846 angels G32 spirits, G4151 and G2532 his G846 ministers G3011 a flame G5395 of fire. G4442
Then were assembled H622 unto me every one that trembled H2730 at the words H1697 of the God H430 of Israel, H3478 because of the transgression H4604 of those that had been carried away; H1473 and I sat H3427 astonied H8074 until the evening H6153 sacrifice. H4503 And at the evening H6153 sacrifice H4503 I arose up H6965 from my heaviness; H8589 and having rent H7167 my garment H899 and my mantle, H4598 I fell H3766 upon my knees, H1290 and spread out H6566 my hands H3709 unto the LORD H3068 my God, H430
G1161 On the morrow, G1887 as they G1565 went on their journey, G3596 and G2532 drew nigh G1448 unto the city, G4172 Peter G4074 went up G305 upon G1909 the housetop G1430 to pray G4336 about G4012 the sixth G1623 hour: G5610
And G1161 about G4012 the ninth G1766 hour G5610 Jesus G2424 cried G310 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 saying, G3004 Eli, G2241 Eli, G2241 lama G2982 sabachthani? G4518 that G5123 is to say, My G3450 God, G2316 my G3450 God, G2316 why G2444 hast thou forsaken G1459 me? G3165
And the living creatures H2416 ran H7519 and returned H7725 as the appearance H4758 of a flash of lightning. H965
Thus were their faces: H6440 and their wings H3671 were stretched H6504 upward; H4605 two H8147 wings of every one H376 were joined H2266 one H376 to another, H376 and two H8147 covered H3680 their bodies. H1472
Then flew H5774 one H259 of the seraphims H8314 unto me, having a live coal H7531 in his hand, H3027 which he had taken H3947 with the tongs H4457 from off the altar: H4196 And he laid H5060 it upon my mouth, H6310 and said, H559 Lo, this hath touched H5060 thy lips; H8193 and thine iniquity H5771 is taken away, H5493 and thy sin H2403 purged. Commentary on Daniel 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter we have,
And it is the clearest, brightest, prophecy of the Messiah, in all the Old Testament.
Dan 9:1-3
We left Daniel, in the close of the foregoing chapter, employed in the king's business; but here we have him employed in better business than any king had for him, speaking to God and hearing from him, not for himself only, but for the church, whose mouth he was to God, and for whose use the oracles of God were committed to him, relating to the days of the Messiah. Observe,
Dan 9:4-19
We have here Daniel's prayer to God as his God, and the confession which he joined with that prayer: I prayed, and made my confession. Note, In every prayer we must make confession, not only of the sins we have been guilty of (which we commonly call confession), but of our faith in God and dependence upon him, our sorrow for sin and our resolutions against it. It must be our confession, must be the language of our own convictions and that which we ourselves do heartily subscribe to.
Let us go over the several parts of this prayer, which we have reason to think that he offered up much more largely than is here recorded, these being only the heads of it.
Dan 9:20-27
We have here the answer that was immediately sent to Daniel's prayer, and it is a very memorable one, as it contains the most illustrious prediction of Christ and gospel-grace that is extant in all the Old Testament. If John Baptist was the morning-star, this was the day-break to the Sun of righteousness, the day-spring from on high. Here is,
