21 They have moved me to jealousy H7065 with that which is not H3808 God; H410 they have provoked me to anger H3707 with their vanities: H1892 and I will move them to jealousy H7065 with those which are not a people; H5971 I will provoke them to anger H3707 with a foolish H5036 nation. H1471
But G235 I say, G3004 Did G1097 not G3378 Israel G2474 know? G1097 First G4413 Moses G3475 saith, G3004 I G1473 will provoke G3863 you G5209 to jealousy G3863 by G1909 them that are no G3756 people, G1484 and by G1909 a foolish G801 nation G1484 I will anger G3949 you. G5209
For he walked H3212 in all the way H1870 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat, H5028 and in his sin H2403 wherewith he made Israel H3478 to sin, H2398 to provoke the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 to anger H3707 with their vanities. H1892
Yet the number H4557 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 shall be as the sand H2344 of the sea, H3220 which cannot be measured H4058 nor numbered; H5608 and it shall come to pass, that in the place H4725 where it was said H559 unto them, Ye are not my people, H5971 there it shall be said H559 unto them, Ye are the sons H1121 of the living H2416 God. H410
I have hated H8130 them that regard H8104 lying H7723 vanities: H1892 but I trust H982 in the LORD. H3068
They provoked him to jealousy H7065 with strange H2114 gods, with abominations H8441 provoked they him to anger. H3707
I say G3004 then, G3767 G3361 Have they stumbled G4417 that G2443 they should fall? G4098 God forbid: G3361 G1096 but G235 rather through their G846 fall G3900 salvation G4991 is come unto the Gentiles, G1484 for to G1519 provoke G3863 them G846 to jealousy. G3863 Now G1161 if G1487 the fall G3900 of them G846 be the riches G4149 of the world, G2889 and G2532 the diminishing G2275 of them G846 the riches G4149 of the Gentiles; G1484 how G4214 much more G3123 their G846 fulness? G4138 For G1063 I speak G3004 to you G5213 Gentiles, G1484 inasmuch as G1909 G3745 G3303 I G1473 am G1510 the apostle G652 of the Gentiles, G1484 I magnify G1392 mine G3450 office: G1248 If by any means G1513 G4458 I may provoke to emulation G3863 them which are my G3450 flesh, G4561 and G2532 might save G4982 some G5100 of G1537 them. G846
Do we provoke G3863 G2228 the Lord G2962 to jealousy? G3863 are we G2070 stronger than G3361 G2478 he? G846
Are there H3426 any among the vanities H1892 of the Gentiles H1471 that can cause rain? H1652 or can the heavens H8064 give H5414 showers? H7241 art not thou he, O LORD H3068 our God? H430 therefore we will wait H6960 upon thee: for thou hast made H6213 all these things.
But they are altogether H259 brutish H1197 and foolish: H3688 the stock H6086 is a doctrine H4148 of vanities. H1892
Behold the voice H6963 of the cry H7775 of the daughter H1323 of my people H5971 because of them that dwell in a far H4801 country: H776 Is not the LORD H3068 in Zion? H6726 is not her king H4428 in her? Why have they provoked me to anger H3707 with their graven images, H6456 and with strange H5236 vanities? H1892
But G1161 ye G5210 are a chosen G1588 generation, G1085 a royal G934 priesthood, G2406 an holy G40 nation, G1484 a peculiar G1519 G4047 people; G2992 that G3704 ye should shew forth G1804 the praises G703 of him who hath called G2564 you G5209 out of G1537 darkness G4655 into G1519 his G846 marvellous G2298 light: G5457 Which G3588 in time past G4218 were not G3756 a people, G2992 but G1161 are now G3568 the people G2992 of God: G2316 which G3588 had G1653 not G3756 obtained mercy, G1653 but G1161 now G3568 have obtained mercy. Commentary on Deuteronomy 32 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 32
In this chapter we have,
Deu 32:1-6
Here is,
Deu 32:7-14
Moses, having in general represented God to them as their great benefactor, whom they were bound in gratitude to observe and obey, in these verses gives particular instances of God's kindness to them and concern for them.
Three things are here enlarged upon as instances of God's kindness to his people Israel, and strong obligations upon them never to forsake him:-
Deu 32:15-18
We have here a description of the apostasy of Israel from God, which would shortly come to pass, and to which already they had a disposition. One would have thought that a people under so many obligations to their God, in duty, gratitude, and interest, would never have turned from him; but, alas! they turned aside quickly. Here are two great instances of their wickedness, and each of them amounted to an apostasy from God:-
Deu 32:19-25
The method of this song follows the method of the predictions in the foregoing chapter, and therefore, after the revolt of Israel from God, described in the foregoing verses, here follow immediately the resolves of divine Justice concerning them; we deceive ourselves if we think that God will be thus mocked by a foolish faithless people, that play fast and loose with him.
Deu 32:26-38
After many terrible threatenings of deserved wrath and vengeance, we have here surprising intimations of mercy, undeserved mercy, which rejoices against judgment, and by which it appears that God has no pleasure in the death of sinners, but would rather they should turn and live.
Deu 32:39-43
This conclusion of the song speaks three things:
Deu 32:44-52
