14 Then thine heart H3824 be lifted up, H7311 and thou forget H7911 the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 which brought thee forth H3318 out of the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 from the house H1004 of bondage; H5650
They forgat H7911 God H410 their saviour, H3467 which had done H6213 great things H1419 in Egypt; H4714
Beware H8104 that thou forget H7911 not the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 in not keeping H8104 his commandments, H4687 and his judgments, H4941 and his statutes, H2708 which I command H6680 thee this day: H3117
That his heart H3824 be not lifted up H7311 above his brethren, H251 and that he turn not aside H5493 from the commandment, H4687 to the right hand, H3225 or to the left: H8040 to the end that he may prolong H748 his days H3117 in his kingdom, H4467 he, and his children, H1121 in the midst H7130 of Israel. H3478
But when he was strong, H2393 his heart H3820 was lifted up H1361 to his destruction: H7843 for he transgressed H4603 against the LORD H3068 his God, H430 and went H935 into the temple H1964 of the LORD H3068 to burn incense H6999 upon the altar H4196 of incense. H7004
But Hezekiah H3169 rendered not again H7725 according to the benefit H1576 done unto him; for his heart H3820 was lifted up: H1361 therefore there was wrath H7110 upon him, and upon Judah H3063 and Jerusalem. H3389
Neither said H559 they, Where is the LORD H3068 that brought us up H5927 out of the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 that led H3212 us through the wilderness, H4057 through a land H776 of deserts H6160 and of pits, H7745 through a land H776 of drought, H6723 and of the shadow of death, H6757 through a land H776 that no man H376 passed through, H5674 and where no man H120 dwelt? H3427
O generation, H1755 see H7200 ye the word H1697 of the LORD. H3068 Have I been a wilderness H4057 unto Israel? H3478 a land H776 of darkness? H3991 wherefore say H559 my people, H5971 We are lords; H7300 we will come H935 no more unto thee?
For G1063 who G5101 maketh G1252 thee G4571 to differ G1252 from another? and G1161 what G5101 hast thou G2192 that G3739 thou didst G2983 not G3756 receive? G2983 G1161 now if G1499 thou didst receive G2983 it, why G5101 dost thou glory, G2744 as G5613 if thou hadst G2983 not G3361 received G2983 it? Now G2235 ye are G2075 full, G2880 now G2235 ye are rich, G4147 ye have reigned as kings G936 without G5565 us: G2257 and G2532 I would to God G3785 G1065 ye did reign, G936 that G2443 we G2249 also G2532 might reign with G4821 you. Commentary on Deuteronomy 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
Moses had charged parents in teaching their children to whet the word of God upon them (ch. 6:7) by frequent repetition of the same things over and over again; and here he himself takes the same method of instructing the Israelites as his children, frequently inculcating the same precepts and cautions, with the same motives or arguments to enforce them, that what they heard so often might abide with them. In this chapter Moses gives them,
Deu 8:1-9
The charge here given them is the same as before, to keep and do all God's commandments. Their obedience must be,
Deu 8:10-20
Moses, having mentioned the great plenty they would find in the land of Canaan, finds it necessary to caution them against the abuse of that plenty, which was a sin they would be the more prone to new that they came into the vineyard of the Lord, immediately out of a barren desert.
