25 And when Moses H4872 saw H7200 that the people H5971 were naked; H6544 (for Aaron H175 had made them naked H6544 unto their shame H8103 among their enemies:) H6965
And he said, H559 I heard H8085 thy voice H6963 in the garden, H1588 and I was afraid, H3372 because I H595 was naked; H5903 and I hid myself. H2244
And when the people H5971 heard H8085 these evil H7451 tidings, H1697 they mourned: H56 and no man H376 did put H7896 on him his ornaments. H5716 For the LORD H3068 had said H559 unto Moses, H4872 Say H559 unto the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 Ye are a stiffnecked H7186 H6203 people: H5971 I will come up H5927 into the midst H7130 of thee in a H259 moment, H7281 and consume H3615 thee: therefore now put off H3381 thy ornaments H5716 from thee, that I may know H3045 what to do H6213 unto thee. And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 stripped H5337 themselves of their ornaments H5716 by the mount H2022 Horeb. H2722
For the LORD H3068 brought H3665 Judah H3063 low H3665 because of Ahaz H271 king H4428 of Israel; H3478 for he made H6544 Judah H3063 naked, H6544 and transgressed H4603 sore H4604 against the LORD. H3068
And many H7227 of them that sleep H3463 in the dust H6083 of the earth H127 shall awake, H6974 some to everlasting H5769 life, H2416 and some to shame H2781 and everlasting H5769 contempt. H1860
What G5101 G3767 fruit G2590 had ye G2192 then G5119 in G1909 those things whereof G3739 ye are G1870 now G3568 ashamed? G1870 for G1063 the end G5056 of those things G1565 is death. G2288
Because G3754 thou sayest, G3004 G3754 I am G1510 rich, G4145 and G2532 increased with goods, G4147 and G2532 have G2192 need G5532 of nothing; G3762 and G2532 knowest G1492 not G3756 that G3754 thou G4771 art G1488 wretched, G5005 and G2532 miserable, G1652 and G2532 poor, G4434 and G2532 blind, G5185 and G2532 naked: G1131 I counsel G4823 thee G4671 to buy G59 of G3844 me G1700 gold G5553 tried G4448 in G1537 the fire, G4442 that G2443 thou mayest be rich; G4147 and G2532 white G3022 raiment, G2440 that G2443 thou mayest be clothed, G4016 and G2532 that the shame G152 of thy G4675 nakedness G1132 do G5319 not G3361 appear; G5319 and G2532 anoint G1472 thine G4675 eyes G3788 with eyesalve, G2854 that G2443 thou mayest see. Commentary on Exodus 32 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 32
It is a very lamentable interruption which the story of this chapter gives to the record of the establishment of the church, and of religion among the Jews. Things went on admirably well towards that happy settlement: God had shown himself very favourable, and the people also had seemed to be pretty tractable. Moses had now almost completed his forty days upon the mount, and, we may suppose, was pleasing himself with the thoughts of the very joyful welcome he should have to the camp of Israel at his return, and the speedy setting up of the tabernacle among them. But, behold, the measures are broken, the sin of Israel turns away those good things from them, and puts a stop to the current of God's favours; the sin that did the mischief (would you think it?) was worshipping a golden calf. The marriage was ready to be solemnized between God and Israel, but Israel plays the harlot, and so the match is broken, and it will be no easy matter to piece it again. Here is,
Exd 32:1-6
While Moses was in the mount, receiving the law from God, the people had time to meditate upon what had been delivered, and prepare themselves for what was further to be revealed, and forty days was little enough for that work; but, instead of that, there were those among them that were contriving how to break the laws they had already received, and to anticipate those which they were in expectation of. On the thirty-ninth day of the forty, the plot broke out of rebellion against the Lord. Here is,
Exd 32:7-14

Exd 32:15-20
Here is,
Exd 32:21-29
Moses, having shown his just indignation against the sin of Israel by breaking the tables and burning the calf, now proceeds to reckon with the sinners and to call them to an account, herein acting as the representative of God, who is not only a holy God, and hates sin, but a just God, and is engaged in honour to punish it, Isa. 59:18. Now,
Exd 32:30-35
Moses, having executed justice upon the principal offenders, is here dealing both with the people and with God.
