16 As I live, H2416 saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD, H3069 surely in the place H4725 where the king H4428 dwelleth that made him king, H4427 whose oath H423 he despised, H959 and whose covenant H1285 he brake, H6565 even with him in the midst H8432 of Babylon H894 he shall die. H4191
My net H7568 also will I spread H6566 upon him, and he shall be taken H8610 in my snare: H4686 and I will bring H935 him to Babylon H894 to the land H776 of the Chaldeans; H3778 yet shall he not see H7200 it, though he shall die H4191 there.
Then he put out H5786 the eyes H5869 of Zedekiah; H6667 and the king H4428 of Babylon H894 bound H631 him in chains, H5178 and carried H935 him to Babylon, H894 and put H5414 him in prison H1004 H6486 till the day H3117 of his death. H4194
And the king H4428 called H7121 the Gibeonites, H1393 and said H559 unto them; (now the Gibeonites H1393 were not of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 but of the remnant H3499 of the Amorites; H567 and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 had sworn H7650 unto them: and Saul H7586 sought H1245 to slay H5221 them in his zeal H7065 to the children H1121 of Israel H3478 and Judah.) H3063
Then said H559 he unto me, This is the curse H423 that goeth forth H3318 over the face H6440 of the whole earth: H776 for every one that stealeth H1589 shall be cut off H5352 as on this side according H3644 to it; and every one that sweareth H7650 shall be cut off H5352 as on that side according H3644 to it. I will bring it forth, H3318 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 and it shall enter H935 into the house H1004 of the thief, H1590 and into the house H1004 of him that sweareth H7650 falsely H8267 by my name: H8034 and it shall remain H3885 in the midst H8432 of his house, H1004 and shall consume H3615 it with the timber H6086 thereof and the stones H68 thereof.
Seeing he despised H959 the oath H423 by breaking H6565 the covenant, H1285 when, lo, he had given H5414 his hand, H3027 and hath done H6213 all these things, he shall not escape. H4422 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 As I live, H2416 surely mine oath H423 that he hath despised, H959 and my covenant H1285 that he hath broken, H6331 even it will I recompense H5414 upon his own head. H7218
For thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 I will even deal H6213 with thee as thou hast done, H6213 which hast despised H959 the oath H423 in breaking H6565 the covenant. H1285
Moreover he put out H5786 Zedekiah's H6667 eyes, H5869 and bound H631 him with chains, H5178 to carry H935 him to Babylon. H894
And Zedekiah H6667 king H4428 of Judah H3063 shall not escape H4422 out of the hand H3027 of the Chaldeans, H3778 but shall surely H5414 be delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 of the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and shall speak H1696 with him mouth H6310 to mouth, H6310 and his eyes H5869 shall behold H7200 his eyes; H5869 And he shall lead H3212 Zedekiah H6667 to Babylon, H894 and there shall he be until I visit H6485 him, saith H5002 the LORD: H3068 though ye fight H3898 with the Chaldeans, H3778 ye shall not prosper. H6743
In whose eyes H5869 a vile person H3988 is contemned; H959 but he honoureth H3513 them that fear H3373 the LORD. H3068 He that sweareth H7650 to his own hurt, H7489 and changeth H4171 not.
If a man H376 vow H5087 a vow H5088 unto the LORD, H3068 or swear H7650 an oath H7621 to bind H631 his soul H5315 with a bond; H632 he shall not break H2490 his word, H1697 he shall do H6213 according to all that proceedeth H3318 out of his mouth. H6310
And thou shalt not escape out H4422 of his hand, H3027 but shalt surely H8610 be taken, H8610 and delivered H5414 into his hand; H3027 and thine eyes H5869 shall behold H7200 the eyes H5869 of the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and he shall speak H1696 with thee mouth H6310 to mouth, H6310 and thou shalt go H935 to Babylon. H894 Yet hear H8085 the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 O Zedekiah H6667 king H4428 of Judah; H3063 Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of thee, Thou shalt not die H4191 by the sword: H2719 But thou shalt die H4191 in peace: H7965 and with the burnings H4955 of thy fathers, H1 the former H7223 kings H4428 which were before H6440 thee, so shall they burn H8313 odours for thee; and they will lament H5594 thee, saying, Ah H1945 lord! H113 for I have pronounced H1696 the word, H1697 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
Without understanding, G801 covenantbreakers, G802 without natural affection, G794 implacable, G786 unmerciful: G415
And I will come near H7126 to you to judgment; H4941 and I will be a swift H4116 witness H5707 against the sorcerers, H3784 and against the adulterers, H5003 and against false H8267 swearers, H7650 and against those that oppress H6231 the hireling H7916 in his wages, H7939 the widow, H490 and the fatherless, H3490 and that turn aside H5186 the stranger H1616 from his right, and fear H3372 not me, saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts. Commentary on Ezekiel 17 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 17
God was, in the foregoing chapter, reckoning with the people of Judah, and bringing ruin upon them for their treachery in breaking covenant with him; in this chapter he is reckoning with the king of Judah for his treachery in breaking covenant with the king of Babylon; for when God came to contend with them he found many grounds of his controversy. The thing was now in doing: Zedekiah was practising with the king of Egypt underhand for assistance in a treacherous project he had formed to shake off the yoke of the king of Babylon, and violate the homage and fealty he had sworn to him. For this God by the prophet here,
Eze 17:1-21
We must take all these verses together, that we may have the parable and the explanation of it at one view before us, because they will illustrate one another.
Let us now see what the matter of this message is.
Eze 17:22-24
When the royal family of Judah was brought to desolation by the captivity of Jehoiachin and Zedekiah it might be asked, "What has now become of the covenant of royalty made with David, that his children should sit upon his throne for evermore? Do the sure mercies of David prove thus unsure?' To this it is sufficient for the silencing of the objectors to answer that the promise was conditional. If they will keep my covenant, then they shall continue, Ps. 132:12. But David's posterity broke the condition, and so forfeited the promise. But the unbelief of man shall not invalidate the promise of God. He will find out another seed of David in which it shall be accomplished; and that is promised in these verses.
